Enjoy some action along Nevada's Palisade Canyon. One of the most scenic railroad sections in the state, in my opinion.
This was during a trip out to Utah from Oregon. I wanted to spend at least part of a day here on my journey and I was pretty satisfied to get 5 trains in just one afternoon as well as 1 more on my way back to Oregon a week later. This video is another big check off the list!
Recording equipment used:
-Mavic 3 Pro
-Sony ZV E-10

As an "Original Transcon" RR enthusiast, have been there several times, visit artifacts, etc. James Strobridge and the "gang" did an amazing job, and Alfred Hart caught the action...er..the stills. One more fascinating photo is from Thanksgiving of 1868, his family and a Reverend, seen. And of course, their adopted son, Sam, was featured in a photo at Promontory Summit event the next May. Thanks for the lovely video, from Darrell.

Great video Dan. Having worked 9 yrs on the Elko Sub it was neat to see it from the air. If you get a chance to go there again, just east of Tunnel 40 is the cross over for the #1 and #2 tracks. Some neat bridge work chosen by the railroads to make the cross over. I thought of Lionel every time I went through there.

Thank you for another wonderful video, Dan! I enjoyed watching the Union Pacific trains winding their way through the beauty of Palisade Canyon in Nevada. Union Pacific runs some long trains through this trackage. Your shot of the manifest train coming out of Tunnel 40 at 20:41 was magnificent! You were in the right place at the right time to capture that moment for us.

Thank you for the narration, length, direction of travel, number of power units and what the loads were. Now I must look up what a manifest train is. Looks like it is more than grain. Much appreciated. --- Manifest - Train made up of mixed rail cars (box cars, tank cars, piggyback cars, etc.). Bulk - Train made up of a single "bulk" commodity (other than coal) and car type. Bulk commodities include grain, soda ash and ore. Yes, what I thought.

Well done, as always! This canyon has always been of interest to me. Of particular historical note was the nearby wreck of the City of San Francisco. Worth looking up. Around the 19 mim mark the grain train's DPU passes over the site and it's eliminated river crossings. They even altered the river course! Note the old abudtment. Thanks, Dan!

I always found areas like this to be interesting. How people moved to places like this to make a life for themselves and their families. Glad you stopped by and was able to film the area. Did you for interest sake, see where the Eureka & Palisade Railroad met up with the Southern Pacific. The old town site area and etc. I think this could be of interest for anyone that enjoys narrow gauge railroading.

I lived in Elko NV for 14 years and in all that time I NEVER saw a eastbound on the old SP through Palisade canyon. It's possible things have changed since I left (2002) but I think that local you caught should be filed with your collection of hens teeth. The SD40-2s on the UP locals have been the same as long as I was there - Back before the merger SP would usually have a couple GPs on their local, but from time to time I'd see an SD-9. I remember paddling my canoe around the lake/flooded mine pit at Barth - your west end of the canyon spot. And catching crawdads in the river. ;)

Another awesome video. That Mavic 3 Pro is looking good. I live in Southern Nevada and I had never heard of this place, but now I'm thinking of visiting the location in the future. Would you say that you need a truck if you visit the area? I ask because it sure looks like everything is gravel road by where you shot the video of the trains. Thanks for your time and I know that it costs money and you aren't that close, but are you planning on visiting Cajon Pass or Tehachapi anytime soon?

Hey thanks a lot! I am pretty proud of this one. No pretty much everywhere I went in this video can be accessed by anyone in a normal sedan. I really do want to get back to Tehachapi and Cajon but I don't know when that will be. I think I will first be making my own maiden voyage to the Southern Transcon in Arizona before I head back there.

@@TheRailfanDan If you hit the southern transcon, let me know man because that's a great place to railfan. I don't know how fast your drones fly (my air2s maxes out at about 30mph with obstacle avoidance), but many of the trains fly through alot of that area. Keep up the great videos.

a click on the tumbs up is too little to show how I liked this video. I skipped the ground shots, they now seemed so boring with those amazing shots from the air. Is the "tracks crossing over each other" a location to shoot? Would love to see those lines cross each other from the sky.
@richardreid6377
@richardreid6377 7 ай бұрын
The crossover is reachable if you have a vehicle with good ground clearance; at least in dry conditions. As I remember it wasn't a practical spot to shoot from the ground, but a drone would be a different story. Easier to reach from the Palisade end.
@TheRailfanDan
@TheRailfanDan 6 ай бұрын
Thanks so much for that! I only like to add the ground shots so folks get a little bit of content with audio of the trains since it is a big part of the enjoyment for many including myself. But I definitely understand what you mean about it not being as exciting! Richard is correct as well. I would have liked to have tried to get into that location but I didn't have enough time planned here to do that this go around.
