I accidentally saw the film in 3D, and I feel like it improved the visuals a lot. Not because of the 3D itself, nobody cares about that. It’s just that the 3D glasses have a bit of a dark blue tint to them, which helps cut down on the glare and makes everything feel more cinematic. And I kept swapping between wearing and not wearing those 3D glasses just to compare it with the intended lighting of the film, eventually deciding that the 3D was better.

The whole reason everything was able to be put together so well and be so cohesive and good across all departments (costume design, production design, performances, score, VFX, etc) is because of Jon M Chu. I think he deserves a Best Director nomination for adapting this so well. Also visually I thought it was actually pretty good. Some of the shots they got, specifically in the opening and dancing through life with the ladders, were really well done on the part of the cinematographer and camera operators. Sometimes the back lighting was a bit much but I do think it deserves to be in consideration for best cinematography. Great review as usual!

the color grading surprisingly didn't bother me as much as I thought it would? I think especially when we get to the Emerald City a lot more POP would've put the film at a 10/10 for me but it wasn't off-putting. I have more of a nitpick with the framing (to me it looks like a lot of the film was shot to perfectly crop to 9:16 for short-form promo and I noticed it enough to knock down the rating) but like with you, the good elements still wowed me more than the nitpicks bothered me. I am curious about how they're going to tackle Act II. I would argue the songs are WAY stronger so I'm hopeful that next year the plot will have as much time to breathe and expand as it did this time.

Man, movies are just up this year. I have seen very few flops from movies I wanted, joker 2 aside. It’s shocking how straight this year has been with its hits. Not to mention the surprise hits from the movies I weren’t expecting to be good. Like who would think that both the transformers movie and the Lego Dave feral movie would both be 7 and 8 out of 10s

By splitting it into two they were able to add so much context, characterization, background, and introduce the setting so much better. The weakest part of Wicked the musical has always been the book, the movie (part one at least, so far) has fixed so many of the plot problems that come with the stage version.

This isn’t a part of the sandwich 6 arc cuz Schaff wasn’t allowed to bring in outside food into the movie theater

I really like the way Jon m chu directs movie musicals personally over and would love to see him do more movie musicals in the future

I just can't get over the flat Disney-live-action-remake kind of look this has.

I didn’t have an issue with the lighting in this movie, I think this is a 10/10 film by itself, let alone an excellent adaptation
@Slion435 сағат бұрын
I agree it felt like they didn't add much even though it's like 1 hour longer than the first half of the musical

Yeah no Jon M Chu deserves his flowers. It takes a good director for everything across all departments to come out this well and so consistently at that. See one clip of him on set and he’s clearly the glue binding everyone together

Agree on everything EXCEPT Jon M. Chu not having the sauce. MAN IS THE SAUCE.

when that last riff of defying gravity hit oh my god my body levitated out of me, i turned to my friends who don’t even like musicals and they were crying and we had like a universal out of body experience, might just go back to the movie theater to relive that one last note again

Fun fact: in a get-to-know-the-cast interview for Victorious, Ariana Grande said she wanted to do Wicked when asked what musical she would do if she went back to Broadway. Liz Gillies said pretty much what you would expect.

I saw it in IMAX and it looked great. I only noticed a glare in dancing through life and I never noticed the muted colors other people are talking about. I was actively thinking about how vibrant it was the whole time

My one critique is the lighting as well especially when Fiyero and Elphie were in the forest like even in the theater you could barley see it was so dark

A little off topic but one of the few musicals I’ve ever listened to is Epic the Musical which it’s not finished yet but I believe that it is amazing and I highly recommend it to people that like musicals and the creator Jorge Rivera-Harrens has two livesteams splitting up act one and two and the last two livestreams should come out from Christmas to new years so yeah just one more time I highly recommend listening to it

THANK YOU for talking about the color and lighting. I was told I had to see it in IMAX or Dolby because I didn’t get the full effect, but I shouldn’t have to see a movie in a certain format in order to enjoy it. The colors were bland and dull, it’s like they put a bad filter on them.

I never thought I'd find out about the Chainsaw Man Stageplay from a Schaffrillas Video. I'm not complaining.

I haven't even seen the original stage musical at all, but I was pretty impressed with this movie. I only know Ariana's acting from Victorious and SNL so I didn't quite know what to expect, but WOW she was great! I definitely agree with you on that. I didn't even realize that was Ethan Slater as the munchkin dude and the whole dama makes it funnier.

The moment that the Oklahoma/Wizard of Oz/30s inspired text of “Wicked” appeared I knew this movie was going to be SO FUN

It’s always nice seeing Ariana Grande in something decent, especially after more than a decade ever since that train wreck spin-off that was “Sam & Cat” was cancelled, ending THAT part of the “Schneider-universe” on Cat getting arrested in another state and Sam basically not given a shit about it.

Hard agree on the lighting. That’s literally my only issue with the movie. We should campaign #ReleaseTheTechnicolorCut once both parts are out.

Les Mis is one of those rare movies that I know is objectively bad for all kinds of reasons but I also love it.

supposedly part 2 is where they mention where the book comes more into the play. Where a lot of the book is taken out of the show is going to be in the movie.

My screen in the cinema was almost booked out (which is rly good news) and I feel so sorry for the ppl next to my group, bc we were absolutely losing it for so much of the movie, especially Pfanee and ShenZhen and that cameo scene (ykwim)

I want to see this film purely because Johnathan Bailey is in it. Any Fellow FFXIV players could probably understand why.

I'm glad you mentioned Jon. M Chu. I felt the same exact way visually. Some musical numbers were absolutely incredible and some were dull. Like half of defying gravity made no sense to me but the other half had huge weight. But I disagree I think he does have the sauce but he is just inconsistent with it. I think he has a bright future and these Wicked movies might finally give him direction for a future.

i'm so glad i'm not alone on thinking the lighting was shit. i swear i feel like the entire movie i was either squinting to see or squinting so that i didn't go blind

Pretty much agree with everything you said, i'm really hoping they took the chance to improve on the second act, specially considering it is like 1 hour long on stage. They can double the run time and make the story much more coherent. They even confirmed they added new songs in the second act so let's hope for the best!
@IndyFilmProductions4 сағат бұрын
My 2 biggest hopes for part 2 is that they: 1. Hire a new color grading team 2. Make some pretty big changes to the structure of act 2 so that they can hit all the necessary beats but have the beats make more sense and flow better as a story
