Schecter C-1 FR S SLS Elite Review & Demo

Today in my first ever KZbin video, I'm reviewing and giving a demonstration of my Schecter C1 FR S SLS Elite in Black Fade Burst. Equipped with a Fishman Fluence Modern in the bridge and a Sustainiac in the neck position, this guitar punches well above it's price range. Hear the guitar closed miked and with room mics with a real amp (Diezel VH4) and in a mix with my Line 6 HX Stomp.

I just bought one of these used for under $1000.00. It is an antique fade burst that looks red in photos but is actually dark Brown in normal light. I am a collector of vintage electrics and mostly play '70's-'80's 24 fret neck-thru guitars. I bought this just for the Sustainiac System. It did not disappoint me. I was expecting a lot and It was everything I expected and even more. I had wanted the Schecter Banshee FR S Elite but decided on the C1 SLS Elite because the neck pick-up is a Humbucker vs a Single Coil in the Banshee Elite. Also the C1 SLS has a push-pull voice tap, as well as the Fishman pickups which I have been wanting to try out. The Bridge is active but the neck is passive. There is no guitar company making guitars that compares to the quality and price of a Schecter Guitar. Schecter builds a great neck-thru guitar. The C1 SLS has a small thin C shape neck. The neck is almost the same thickness (1mm difference) from the headstock to the body. It's great for people like me with small fingers. did I mention it plays great.

Somebody returned this guitar today where I work I asked why they returned it The guy said he bought it used and it was missing the nut clamps, the whammy bar and wasn't a fan of Floyd's but it was in flawless mint condition As I am a full time guitar tech with drawers full of parts and am already schecter fan I was quick to take a close look at it $800 I was all over it All missing parts completely remedied Then restrung it with NYXL 8s and did a very thorough set up from soup to nuts I can say that this is an insane beast of a guitar Schecter took this one to the top of the mountain with incredible build quality!! No expenses spared with all components I've got a sizeable collection of guitars in which I've modded most of them in a number of ways and this guitar really serves up an incredible feast of features with stunning looks and plays fantastic! I am going to install a Killswitch

Had this for a couple of years now and even purchased a second one recently. For the price, the features, electronics, construction (the neck is incredibly consistent) and appearance you cannot beat this guitar. The Floyd version is a 1500 but they upgraded parts of it with stainless steel parts (the silver parts) so it's actually better/more stable than a stock 1500. Getting name brand active pickups and a sustaniac system as standard features means many will just play this as is, no mods necessary for stage use. Only thing I did is add straploks. The other thought is the sustaniac pickup when used as just a regular pickup tends to have a surprisingly credible jazz sound when played clean. A surprisingly versatile guitar. If this had been a US made instrument you would easily be paying north of $2000 US to get it. The Koreans have really ramped up their quality akin to some of the nicer Japanese guitars. What I have noticed is the weight of the same type of SLS can vary some - probably depends on the condition of the wood they received in a given batch but overall consistent.

Amazing review! The attention to details (like every possible voice with a different mics) is great. I'm about to buy this guitar, a very complex import process to bring this guitar to Brazil, and your review was great to answer a lot of questions I had since Schecter guitars simply do not reach South America thru regular retailers.

The down side to this and other newer Schecter guitars that use the Sustainiac pickup is that the Sustainiac pickup is either on or off. On their first guitars that used this pickup like my Hellraiser C-1 FR S have their own dedicated volume. Which make it an extremely creative tool... without the dedicated volume, is like driving a muscle car with the accelerator pedal always floored. I do love Schecter guitars and the C1 FR S SLS Elite is awesome, but the lack of control over the Sustainiac, maybe a deal breaker for some of those like me that have guitars with the dedicated volume. You can't really know the benefits till you've used both.

The sustainer acts on the bridge pickup though? I had a look on the Sustainiac website to understand how it works as I am interested in getting a Schecter with one but wanted to be sure it would be right for me. The website explains that when the sustainer is on, only the bridge pickup is active...the sustainer is actually making the strings vibrate, not picking up the sound so you should still have full volume control with the bridge pickup and the sustain effect. The actual humbucking pickup that's part of the Sustainiac just acts as a normal neck pickup. That would be a shame if the volume control doesn't affect that but it wouldn't make a difference to the sustain effect. EDIT TO MY EARLIER COMMENT: I've just watched a review of the Apocalypse C-1 FR S and the reviewer went through all of the knob functions and said one of them was for the Sustainiac intensity. So I take it that is what you were referring to, intensity rather than volume? Just thought I'd come back and edit this comment as I was certainly wrong on the matter of there being a way to adjust the level of the sustain effect on the front of the guitar. I suppose with these SLS Elite models one would have to get a guitar tech to wire in a knob for the intensity. Don't know how many guitar techs have experience with Sustainiac though...even their website says the wiring can be quite complex and you have to be very careful to avoid feedback and electrical issues so adding in another control would have to be done carefully!

When anyone asks about my Ibanez i just says its an Ibanez. I ain't saying "Yeah, it's the Ibanez RGA42FM. Lol. Also, I just this past week got the Syn Custom-S in Satin Gold burst and I'd never tried a sustainiac before but now I don't know how I ever lived without it. Good stuff.

I sold an ivory Schecter ATX Diamond blackjack... worst sale I ever made.. active emgs, jumbo stainless frets, the guitar was just a total honey. I think I got it for $400. The damn thing was so musical it was ridiculous. Perfect in every single regard.

I loved the guitar but mine had ZERO bottom end to speak of and just killed it for me. Active pickups just do not do it for me anymore.

I have a similar guitar (C7 FRS). Do you also have a "sensitive" sustainiac pickup? I mean, with mine, I can hear the physical noise of the switches or knobs, even with noise gate to 50%... Pretty frustrating.

So, I have a question. During high gain, does the sustainiac become finicky? Hissy? Or problematic?

I've never had that problem with it and I use quite a bit of gain and play live regularly at pretty high volume. Only issue I've ever had was when using as just a neck pickup I was getting a horrible distortion, but it turned out I had left a cable in and drained the battery. So my own fault!
