We really enjoyed your discussion of Schengen in this video. Tanya and I are currently planning our adventures for the next 12 months and they include visits to several Schengen zone countries. To make this all work we've included several non-Schengen zone countries so we don't run up against the 90 day in 180 day limit. So, we've included Romania, Serbia and North Macedonia in our plans as well as UK and Northern Ireland. We've also used a Schengen calculator app for several years that is incredibly helpful. (Although I understand Carrie, the app, works well for you two.) Thanks for the video.

Sounds like you have a wonderful plan in place! Having to be out of the Schengen zone, forced us to open our eyes to areas we may not have looked to travel for quite a long time. Brian does like the "Carrie app" as it seems to work without much effort 😂. The calculator is a mind saver, I love anything that does the calculations for me, especially when you are entering and exiting many times. Thanks so much for watching - Cheers 🍻

Hi Guys, Very good video you explained Schengen rules perfectly. Taking a cruise ship repositioning from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean is also a good idea and will be a video that does well. At the moment, I am in Bologna, and it's overwhelmed with tourists. I thought October would be quite but am obviously wrong. I am shocked at the prices it is nearly double what I pay in Spain. Having said that, I do not live in a city popular with tourists. I am looking forward to this week's Florence video.

Brilliant video on the range of issues. We did a lot of research a few years ago including bilateral agreements for us in Australia potentially spending an extended period in Europe. It is technically possible to use the standard 90 days PLUS bilateral agreements to stay for a year but the bilateral rules are different for each country and not all countries have them for Australia. But - in summary - your video is 100% accurate and helpful / practical. My only “gripe” is the 90 day Schengen rules started when there were only about 6 countries involved and now, with 27 countries, it is a bit short. 180 days in 360 would be better but wishful thinking I guess. A 10 out of 10 video.

I really appreciate you taking the time out to do this informative video! While the Schengen platform was created to make travel easier for EU nationals, it sure sounds like it can be a hassle for foreigners. Good thing you brought your passports along for that bus excursion! On a humorous side note: I am used to seeing Carrie on my left ( on the laptop screen ) and Brian on my right. In this video, you two switched. 😃Thanks for another awesome video!

Great that Croatia has been added. Thanks for all of the updates. That's a place on the list that I haven't been able to get to, but friends and neighbors have been going for many years and love it. My neighbors were there in 2022 and also a couple months ago. Hopefully, I'll eventually get there. As for the cost of a visa to get into Turkey, it was also expensive when I went there in the late 1990s. I flew there from Paris, stayed in Istanbul for around 4 days, and then flew back to Paris. It was a great four days though. Have fun! I agree with not taking the risk of hopping back and forth across borders, into Morocco for example, and then returning back into the Schengen Zone to try to restart one's time. When I was spending summers in Europe, I would include the time when I was in either Tunisia or Morocco within however many days I could stay in Europe. I didn't use going to Tunisia or Morocco as a border hopping situation to restart time. I made sure that I was on a plane headed home before my legal time had run out. As for border hopping and returning back into a country, it's been common in Southeast Asia for decades. But, a bit over a decade ago, I think it was, Thailand got strict and a lot of people were stranded in border-hopping countries. It was a mess to say the least. Friends and I were keeping up with that news daily. Plus, here at home, I used to read the Bangkok Post. I also had Thai contacts in Bangkok sending me news. There were folks stuck in both Cambodia and Penang as some would fly to Penang to get their passport stamped and then go back to Thailand to re-enter. And a lot of people had been living in Thailand for many months and years, but on tourist-type visas. As for trying to overstay one's time in any country or region of the world, not a good idea. Trying to beat the system, could get you ending up in jail and/or deported. In Jan 2020, while back in Bangkok, I was on my way to the airport to fly onto Penang as I do at the end of three weeks in Bangkok. As the car that I was in was reaching the airport and traffic was slowing, I noticed a truck to the right of me with an open-air cage-like contraption on the back of it. Looking cramped up inside of the cage-like structure, was a blonde-haired man and woman who looked like they were in their 40s. The truck had two men driving them to the airport. I immediately thought that it was a deportation situation. I had never seen anything like that before in two decades of going to Thailand. Greetings from Los Angeles

Nice video. I remember that entering/leaving the US, some agents didn't know about the procedure when you had a VISA in the US. So, sometimes I had the entry card still when leaving and got into trouble when coming back again and other times it was OK. Most important, ALWAYS BE NICE TO THE BORDER AGENT IN ANY COUNTRY. They have your "life" in their hand at that time, and if you piss them off, they send you back. AND NEVER OVERSTAY OR PLAY WITH THE TIME ALLOWED IN ANY COUNTRY. Always remember, you are a guest their and if they don't like you, you are gone.

I have the agreement printed out already, BUT I was just approved for a one year visitor visa for France. Extremely fast and easy to get if that might interest you. Yes, it's true! When I went to Miami almost 4 years ago I had to ask for a visa for the United States, it's called ESTA and I paid 14 dollars and Is valido for two years but this was because Italy, the country where I came from, was in the Visa Waiver program so there was a need for 'Esta , otherwise if I came from Romania there was a need for a real one since it was much more difficult to obtain and also cost much more (160 dollars)! By the way, I'm Romanian but I've been living in Italy for almost 24 years and I have dual citizenship (Romanian and Italian) so I used my Italian passport to apply for the ESTA!

Great video as always. ETIAS is primarily going to be used to reduce over stayers, and with the electronic gates there will be no more sneaking in and out. It is listed that current penalties are a 1 year ban, followed by a multiyear ban and assorted fines. Those with all these old tricks will be sorry very soon. Often, such as covid, MANY countries manned the borders and stopped many for document checks. It is random and does happen, good luck.

The Schengen app makes it SO easy, it's truly life-changing. Highly recommend. Also I 100% agree with your advice about not just hopping over to Morocco for a day. I lived in Morocco for 6 years, and before getting my residency card, I could hop from Morocco to Spain overnight to "reset" my tourist visa (for Morocco), but definitely NOT the other way around. With that said, if a person was in Spain, had already spent 85 days in the Schengen zone, but their flight out of Barcelona wasn't until 7 days later, they could hop over to Morocco, spend at least 2 days and then hop back into Spain and still have 5 days left in the Schengen. Again, the app would make those types of decisions super easy to keep track of. I love listening to you both and the way you interact with each other (and Brian's facial expressions sometimes crack me up!). By the way, you should really consider visiting Morocco - it's absolutely wonderful. I think you would love it.

I believe you guys use the larger away carryon luggage correct? Have you been able to carry it on all the time? I see a lot of airlines have a 7kg or 10kg limit. Or do most not weigh it? Thanks for the info. Trying to decide to go with a smaller backpack or a hard side carryon. The hard side just seems like it would be a lot easier especially in the airport.

Yes, we use the larger carry-on by Away. We have only been weighed one time in SE Asia and did have to check them We typically check in online so never go to the counter. Which obviously prevents them from weighing your bag before security. They can check at the gate but never do. The bags also fit in the overhead bin with plenty of room, even on all the budget airlines we use. Thank you for watching and safe travels!! Cheers!!🍻

There won't be any border agents involved in normal cases. ETIAS is dependent on the precursor EES (Entry /Exit System) that will come into effect about 6 months ahead of it (end 20224 probably). There won't be any passport stamps anymore either. The whole thing will be automated and involve on first visit the collection of fingerprints / biometric data. Awesome and very useful information and advice, guys! Thanks for sharing. 🫶 I’m excited for your trip to Turkey! We loved Turkey so much that we visited twice. We did Izmir , Antalya and Cappadocia the first trip, went to Sofia Bulgaria for a week , and came back to Istanbul and Ankara. We miss it so much that we’re already planning our next trip next year 😅 You’re correct about border patrol and passport control agents. We got an agent in Riga Latvia coming from Tbilisi Georgia, who had a million and one questions about our travel plans and details. Either he was bored or curious , we still don’t know what that was about! He asked when we’re leaving the Schengen zone and I told him before the 90 days are up in the middle of December, so he told us we can stay up to 180 days within 180 days…ummmm, noooo, buddy, we wish! 😂

They do all add up, that is for sure. We typically set out Airbnb budget first, and after that is arranged we then know what remainder we have to deal with for the rest of the month. We then can adjust our daytrips, eating out, etc. to fit accordingly. We also have a separate yearly budget for flights as well. It's not a quick, hey let's travel there desicion. There is so much time that goes into the planning process prior to making a desicion to travel to a new location. Hope that helps.

I've been traveling all throughout Europe for over a year within less than 2 years time. What I found to be very strange is that border control in Denmark, when returning to the US and entering back in through Copenhagen, does not scan your passport! So I've run into some very flustered agents looking through the stamps in my passport not knowing how to interpret my Schengen stay! They would have to enter all of my stamp dates themselves to figure out if I overstayed! Of course they don't take the lengthy time to do this. And, of course I'm *always* very careful to not overstay. All this is to say that apparently rules are being implemented for Schengen countries to agree to scan all passports and share a common database. This would alleviate the burden on passport agents to figure things out themselves. And maybe they will be able to say, "oh, I see you only have 4 more days that you could have stayed here! Good for you!" 😊

Great video thank you so much. You are both very knowledgeable. Indulge me in running this scenario past you… I am an Australian who will be travelling to Germany in June. I intend to stay in Germany for up to 180 days while I study German language. The German Consulate website for Australia says Australians can remain in Germany for 90 days but must then exit Schengen… and can then reenter Germany on the same day for a further 90 days. So my question is this - should I book my return flight within 180 days of my arriving flight? Or do you think Frankfurt airport immigration won’t be too concerned when I arrive? Thanks so much
@BrianandCarrie
@BrianandCarrie 2 ай бұрын
I don't think I would concern myself with a flight as we've never been asked for a return ticket when entering the Schengen. As far as extension, I would just be sure you get stamped and handle this at the 90 day point so you are sure they have your extension documented.

Question...We plan on Spending about 87 days in Spain and then spending another 3 mths in Montenegro....then back to Spain for 3 mths. I'm a little confused about how to make the Schengen rule work with the 90 day rule with Montenegro. This is NOT a visa actually, it is a simple online entry requirement form for 7 euros, for visa exempt nationals such as US citizens. It takes just a few minutes and you get almost instant answers. MOST people especially US citizens should not worry about it when it takes place and they're saying now it will be 2025. They have been doing this to go to Mexico for years, but you typically fill out the form on the airplane and your hotel charges you the "tax". Straight from the ETIAS FAQ: remain in the international transit area. However, you must have a valid travel authorisation if you leave this area and enter the territory of any of the European countries requiring ETIAS. hello! I have a question - I have a double entry Schengen visa from Finland. Can I make the first trip to France and come back and then on the next trip go to Helsinki and Berlin?
@BrianandCarrie

I believe so, yes but would double check on the official Schengen web site.

can you stay in Spain for 80 days and then go to Portugal and get your 90 day extension from Portugal?

You can get an extension from Portugal, but you can't move throw-out the Schengen zone, you must remain in Portugal. Cheers!!🍻

How much an how can I get this visa

It is free to most anyone. You don't apply for an actual visa. You arrive and stay your 90 days.

So I stumbled into your videos recently, and shared with friends I travel with. After watching several of your pieces, we all had a question about if you are getting paid for your video material from the social media channels. If you are, that puts a different spin on the angle of your story. In other words, getting paid through advertising or whatever on the social media channels and funding your trip that way is not the same as selling all of your possessions and traveling through Europe on a limited budget. Getting paid to post puts a very different spin on your angle. That’s the basic question we have for you! let me know. Thanks
@BrianandCarrie

Doesn't really put any different spin on anything. We worked our entire lives, sold all our possessions and we're traveling the world. Thankfully all the incredibly hard work and hours we put in to bring you free content finally started paying off for us a bit to help fund our travel budget. Just as we share our cost of living openly and freely, if you can make it work within your means, we highly recommend it! Cheers 😊😊

@@BrianandCarrie No problem at all with doing that. Nothing wrong with finding a way to finance your trip. Good for you. But that's not the impression viewers get while watching you. You don't tell them that part -- that your are capitalizing on their viewership to make your budget! Your channels should be titled, "How to Travel the World and Pay for it by Being Content Creators!" The whole "retire early" bit is basically a fraud. There's an issue of authenticity and honest here. Sure, Rick Steeves has done well for himself in this area. The key distinction is people know he is selling them his services. Save travels.😇

It's pretty much assumed most people who do KZbin make something for the hard work they do. And, oh how we wish KZbin funded our travels fully... That would be an amazing milestone to reach for us. Cheers!!

At the moment several countries have started to control their border due to uncontrolled mass migration to Europe from Africa and Middle East to stop people smugglers. Currently that i.a. Austria, Poland, Czech Republic and Germany. If you wonder if thats an overreach you need to know that just only in 2023 over 160.000 illegal immigrants have moved into the EU so far

Is it not a new rule that a marriage certificate is only valid now with a QR code? Our's is so old that it was written with type writer, when QR codes had not even been invented. My wife's visa application got refused this past week just because of that. While last year there was no problem. Besides, we planned to visit Morocco once she would have arrived, and I do not understand why you say that it is not possible, since all you need is a double or multiple entry visa.

We have never heard of marriage license being invalid without a QR code. Not sure why it would matter to get into a country?

I think this is f9r people who are traveling for long periods. People that are only say in Germany for 2 or 3 weeks, this wouldn't apply. I may he wrong, I'm not a travel expert.

You are correct!! This would only apply to those who are long-term travelers. The ETIAS will apply to everyone when they decide to implement it in, most likely, 2025. Thank you for watching and commenting! Cheers!!🍻
