@@jayaros5337 He never mentioned trying different tubes which could’ve made a difference in a tube preamp. What seems to hold many lower cost preamps is the volume control. I don’t know how PS Audio does it, but the GCD sounds more transparent to me.

@@Corndog642 you’ll get no argument on rolling tubes from me lol. I have the Freya+ and am a bit addicted to tube rolling. Unfortunately the cost of NOS 6SN7 tubes have gone up and supply issues Schiit had with 6SN7 tubes was the reason the Freya N was even made. For the money, the Freya pre-amps are hard to beat. The pre-amp NRD used was 3 times the cost of the Freya+ with tubes

A choke is an old-school term for an inductor. Think of a transformer, but with only one winding through which current to pass. As an electrical engineer, there are only so many passive components available - resistors, capacitors and inductors. Power supply designers often “cheap out” and use only capacitor banks, but better quality power is achieved by combining inductors with capacitors in the filtering phase. So when you hear “choke regulated” they are referring to the use of inductors in the power supply filtration. The trade-off is a heavier unit, bigger footprint and higher cost to the customer. Musical Fidelity has been making choke-regulated audio amplifiers for decades. Or they used to.

The music I listen to is all over the place. Mainly metal, classic rock, 80’s and almost anything that’s a live recording. I’m loving the sound of the Emotiva setup. The Klipsch speakers are kind of hot on top, but my room is crazy and open. I put the speakers on these wire mesh like baskets to raise the sound stage about 12 inches. The speakers are actually running high pass with a sub crossed at 90hz from the low pass on the pt1. I’m still burning it all in. Once it seems good as it is, then I’ll switch to full range and start all over lol.

Wow! A fantastic review of some really great American audio manufacturers. Nicely done. I have a TON of Schiit gear (including a Vidar) and also a pair of Emotiva XPA-HC1 monoblocks. All of it is excellent gear. I would very much love to try out a pair of Tyrs but, in the end, I think that the HC-1's are my end-game system. They do have some soul to them. Now I wanna try some Tyr amps, but right not the budget isn't there. Regardless you did a very good review. Much appreciated as always.

I find the Crown Drivecore ii amps to be better than most people think. What I read was Harmon used some of the same technology as the more expensive Mark Levinson stuff they were building at that time. I've had a few amps come and go and even some higher priced stuff to compare to and the Crowns are good for the price.. especially if you pick up used. The treble is soft, but not very extended. Voices are very clear, transparent. Lower and mid lower bass can be a little lean compared to other amps of it's power but I wouldn't consider it bad or completely lacking. I would describe it as a linear amp where nothing sticks out, and if paired with the same type of speaker will give good results. I wouldn't pair it with overly sensitive speakers, and would take the time to choose which Sensitivity Input on the amp sounds better. You will notice a difference between the 2. I have held onto one of my Crown's and I put it in whenever I'm having an issue or I'm in-between amps. I find it to be very smooth. The gear you pair it with plays a part in this as well though.

I have the Freya N and am considering a pair of Vidar 2s or Tyrs. I love the gain on the Tyrs, the power on the Vidar 2s in mono. I'm assuming the Tyrs are a little better quality for twice the price, but is the sound twice as good?

The Ragnarok is a wonderful integrated amp and has the option of having a DAC and phono. I have one without the extra add-ons and I LOVE it. It sounds so good in my 2nd, smaller system. I know you said MOST are separates and I'm sure you're already aware of the Ragnarok...I'm just throwing my 2 cents in about it in case you haven't heard one. 👍🏼👍🏼

I wonder how the Schitt Tyrs would go against the Emotiva XPA HC1 monos. At $879…the HC1s are closer in price to the Tyr. Whoops. I guess the XPA DR1 at 1500 a piece are the better competitor.

Loving the CAMfam. Literally just hanging out on the web “shooting the Schiit”. Until recent reviews I was hoping to build my first separates system with a pair of the Emotiva XPA HC-1 mono blocks, but am now leaning Tyr. The HC-1s are 50% more power at 50% the cost (and their size REALLY benefits my shelves), but does anyone know if results would be similar to the Tyr/A1 shootout?

I LOVE my XPA HC1s!!! They replaced a 20 year old Adcom GFA-5400 (125 WPC). I replaced my old (and broken) Aragon 18K Mk II preamp with a Marantz SR-8012 AV receiver (running in strict pass through mode). Just got a BlueSound Node as a dedicated music streamer (Apple TV is now strictly for movies and KZbin). I have a Geshelli J2 DAC w AKM chip and USB on order. I fully expect the sound from the Node to bf even better. I can say the Emotivas are muscular at the bottom end, they have terrific dynamic range, and I find them to be extremely quiet on noise floor. They broke in over about 3 weeks and I have really enjoyed their performance as paired with my ohm hungry Bowers & Wilkins 702 S2 main speakers.

You're probably hearing the result of the Tyrs massive reserves of power from their doubtless huge transformers and capacitors in the power supply sections. 200 watts at 8 ohms is no joke. Also this allows a really good amplifier section the oomph it needs for good damping and control during big low frequency transients. At 110 pounds per stereo pair, this is what you're paying for, power reserves constantly on tap and fine control of that power. This sort of thing goes double for a really good tube amp. This is just like when you build a hot rod car, cubic inches cost cubic stacks of dollars.

My friend has Tyrs and he brought them over a while back. He also has an Audio-gd R27-HE that he drives them with and brought that too, as well as a Freya+. I'm just running a Parasound Hint 6 right now and have a Vidar in the mud as well. My Speakers are Tekton Moabs. I found the Tyrs to be incredibly neutral and transparent. They have a lot of resolution and are very capable. Bass is tight and controlled. If there's more than the A1, I would suggest that the A1 is lacking and not that Tyr has boosted bass. If anything, I expected Tyr to have more personality, but it doesn't. I'm not complaining though! The effortless clarity is addictive. For music, I think my preference is to pair them with a warmer source. For movies, I'd go all in on transparency. Out of everything we listened to, possibly the most haunting thing for me was the sounds of the fighter jets in Topgun Mavrick. I know, right? But jets have that incredible sound as they tear through the air. The Tyrs captured it and I felt like the jets were actually real. When I went back to my Hint 6, it was like someone threw blankets over the speakers. And the Hint 6 is no slouch. As for the Freya +, we only tried it in tube mode with the stock tubes.. It had a pleasant tonality but was plainly outclassed by the rest of the system. It simply cost too much resolution compared to running the pre-outs on the R27-HE. Using the Hint 6 only for its line stage seemed to net a decent compromise between the two signatures, but R27 was still king.

A Choke (coil) is an inductor that is calculated and designed to work within a certain frequency range. In the case of a powerline choke, it freely allows the powerline frequency through while quenching the higher frequencies, reducing stress on the transformer and other components down the line. Also, Coils resist change in current, thus reducing current ripple and thereby reducing the chance of changing voltage drop across resistors in the immediate area that can show up as voltage ripple. Capacitance resists change in voltage, that's why power supply caps smooth out the circuit voltage. Now, I haven't researched the Tyr, so I don't know what they are doing, but I would hazard a guess as to them using a very large choke to attempt to keep current very smooth. Much the same way a guitar amp uses a choke to keep current relatively smooth out of the power transformer. Many high end super sensitive receivers use chokes to keep their tuned circuits clean.

Emotiva wins amp battle as my BasX was on sale for $300 (100 wpc at 8 ohm). Plus it has high pass switch (80 hz?) with lows out variable RCAs. Schiit wins preamp battle as my Asgard 3 was $220 plus they have many other preamps with and without tubes. ChiFi wins cheap dac battle ($110). Does a pair of Tyr amps sound 10x better? No way. 2x better? I hope so. Maybe one day I will get a pair. Wait. That didn't come out right. 😲
