This was really fun to see the two of you together. I loved the coffee making intro! I think the Urd is really cool. I like Schiit’s willingness to bring things to market that interest them, balanced by their pragmatic approach to products continuation in their line-up. I wish the Sol turntable would have been continued and had a chance to evolve.
@Corndog642 Жыл бұрын
A couple of points missed here: Schiit’s digital guru, Mike Moffat created Urd because once they figured out the USB output, Mike found Unison to Unison (into their Yggdrasil OG) sounded better than spdf. They also chose that transport mechanism because it’s CD only. It’s not a bd/dvd/cd drive. It’s only for 16/44 CD audio because it’s still a really good format.

My takeaway from the dvd player video was "Hey, if you already have an old DVD player or something laying around, start using it as a CD transport to see if you even like the format, which you will."

I'm still using an old Oppo for my CDs, SACDs, and HDCDs. My system isn't really in a range where I need more, but it is a great entry point even for people that might want something fancier down the road.

One of the big reasons that clocks are important in the recording world is so that all of your digital devices are working on the same clock. The benefit is so that all of your digital devices are working on the same clock. If different digital devices are working on different clocks that will cause jitter. This is not an issue when you are using a single device for playback. I am not saying that a clock won't help with resolution (I honestly don't know) but the reason they are used in studios is due to measurable issues of differing clocks in different devices.

I enjoyed the back and forth between the two of you. I've watched and subscribed to both of you for at least a couple of years.. About a month ago I decided I needed a SACD player. I looked around at buying used, searched what others said, and paid particular attention to anywhere I could see the internals. This is what I purchased. Pioneer DV-46AV. I use the COAX output to an external DAC. It sounds great. I listen to some of my music which either of you would likely run away from. Old Jazz and a recent purchase of Anna Lapwood playing pipe organ. There are only certain times where I can use my speakers playing that music. I have two subwoofers. This is the beauty of having a good CD player. No wow/flutter and absolutely no rumble. Great video 👍

Excellent discussion…I purchased an Audiolab CD transport and I cannot tell the difference between my bluesound node with Upgraded power supply (internal and external) and the CD transport. Denafrips Ares 2 as DAC. I love them both. I don’t feel the need to “upgrade”. However, I have a $3k modwright phono stage, technics GR and I am never quite satisfied with my sound as I am with the Digital equipment.

Ha! So cool you both got together to chat and talk CDs and audio. I’ve been following you both for a few years, and spent nearly all of 2022 buying nearly everything Randy recommended. My various lower end systems are hugely improved thanks to CAM. And some of the gear, including the Schiit stuff and my WiiM Pro, are helping my primary systems reach their max potential. Regarding music preferences, you guys are always fun. Darko and his Techno fetish and Randy, who likes all kinds of music as long as it’s Metallica! Throw in the Audiophiliac and you’ve got pretty much everything I listen to covered. Great video! And btw, all three Under The Covers CDs by Sweet & Hoffs are excellent!

Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs did a series of CDs called Under The Covers. Volume 1 is covers of the 60's, Vol. 2 is covers of the 70's and of course Vol. 3 is 80's. All of it VERY good, but I really like their 60's stuff, really well done.

One big pro for physical formats is that its not dependant on internet. What do you stream when the connection is down? You can play your LP or CD as long as you have power.
@AG-bp3ll Жыл бұрын
You can also pick your version of the album. Most streaming services offer the latest remaster when I usually just prefer to hear the old 80's CD I am used to. I have that option with physical media.

Nice one. I've been a subscriber of Darko audio for a while and I really like his channel. Today I have to say though that whoever was making the coffee at the beginning of the video hasn't a clue about that beautiful beverage. Not only the coffemaker was a piece of crap but the resulting liquid was worst that the water leftovers after the dirty cuttlery rinsing operation. Please, you can be The Cheap Audio Man but brother for God's sake don't be the crappy cup of coffee dude 🙂

As a metalcore fan I’d love to be able to try out speakers in a store with stuff I’d listen too at home but isn’t going to happen. Schiit could bring back their excellent clock they sold when they first started their business. I can not recall the name of the component now, but it was available for a period of time. I was never able to secure one during that period of time due to monetary constraints. However, the device held very positive reviews. Many years later, that beginning delve into digital clocking, which may have led to the Schiit URD today, plus their transfer in a proprietary manner to their DACs, opened up a new world of Schiit. I own the Schiit Sol, which is now defunct; if the URD can compete, I really need one. Mike and Jason are both enamored with genius. Their Schiit is the cutting edge Resolution!

Nice to see both of you. Some comments regarding the CD transports and the URD First is that many people uses the CD players connecting them to the integrated amps, preamps or receivers using the digital output, probably because they think that a digital media is better connecting trough digital output. That means that all that people is using the CD players as CD transports, and they are doing it even haven’t no idea what is a an external DAC. And my thoughts about the Schiit URD is that is a cool idea, but you still can connect a CD player or transport to an external DAC even if the DAC has only USB input, you can add a Toslink to USB converter, it’s less nice solution, but a cheaper one.

It’s totally unrelated to this video but I wanted to thank you. I picked up some Koss kph 40’s during Prime days after seeing your review of them. I was looking for some light weight, knock around headphones. When I gave them a first listen I was blown away. Totally worth $36! Thank you!

An excellent dual point of view on the Schiit CD transport ideology. Having a USB digital interface on this cd transport to meld with a literal ton of USB DACs is brilliant. Coming up with proprietary USB interface to avoid paying a premium for xmos chips and custom firmware is even better. Schiit is making themselves into a One-Stop-Shop to give the customer base a much wider array of options. Very Kool 😎.
