They used it around their children who used it around their children who used it around their children. The term was tied to segregation so the assumption is that anyone who continues to use it regularly is prejudiced. My grandmother was born during the Great Depression. She's still alive. The south was still segregated when my mother was a teenager. I have a son in his 20's. Values and beliefs can be passed down through generations. Fortunately hatred nor bigotry were passed down through mine.

We're all American but there are foods, music, customs, etc that smaller groups don't want to lose. Holding on to the hyphen is a good way to acknowledge both. So I get African-American, Korean-American, Italian-American, etc. Having "seasonal labels" though just causes unnecessary confusion. You shouldn't be called a racist for not understanding that. If we're willing to talk and really listen to each other, without the name calling, we'd understand each other better. Black suffering was part of our history, at no point in my entire life have I never not been aware of that. However, we have large organizations and individuals who, through secret financing or direct activism, profit from keeping black suffering front and center in American politics. I don’t agree that black people are treated worse, I feel like they have protected status. There are books dedicated to listing just how many ways a young black person can qualify for college. I may be wrong, but I'm going to assume that you aren't American because of your spelling of "colored." In America, the term "colored" is associated with segregation and racial discrimination. During segregation businesses, hotels, bathrooms, water fountains, etc had signs - "white only," "colored only" "No coloreds allowed." It really wasn't that long ago. In fact segregation still existed when my mom was a teenager. There are a lot of people still alive who lived through that - people who were discriminated against and people who fought to keep things segregated. It's not a word that you hear regularly in the mainstream. The assumption is that those who supported segregation would be the only ones to continue using it and that they used it around their children who then used it around their children. It would be possible then that they passed their prejudices and bigotry down as well. That assumption may be wrong and may be unfair, but as long people who lived through those times are still alive, the sensitivity will still be there. I'm not aware of any negative connotations associated with the terms white or Asian, so I can't think of a reason why either term would be offensive. @@WinningThisOne that’s awful. Black is black! My husband is part Indian and he refers to his family skin as brown. I wouldn’t usually say coloured but black - but apparently can’t say that either. I’m not sure what I’m suppose to say.
