I’ve never heard someone else express my thoughts out loud before…I know this isn’t the most popular video but I feel like I was meant to watch this video or something. I was considered gifted in school and I went to college and got a job a motion graphics designer which I didn’t hate but what I did hate was corporate and I also hated being paid 24/hr after having a degree. My husband and I want to try for babies and have the exact same thought processes as you in regards to homeschooling, as well as in minimalistic thoughts and also following our passions as a means for income rather than the degree. We have a real estate company but we haven’t had time to actually do anything with it but we just literally quit our jobs and we’re running off to Canada for the summer and Mexico and we will give birth in Mexico, gods willing, as a way to afford a better life for me and our future family….i don’t remember the point of this comment I just say all this to say that this video REALLY touched me and please just keep doing what you’re doing, follow your heart because you’re really helping people. I just saw you got your first sponsorship and I’m sure that external validation was huge! I just got my first sale on my Etsy shop after 2 weeks and although it was $3 it really made me feel like I didn’t make a mistake by quitting my corporate job. Tldr; thank you for being you and I haven’t resonated with someone like this irl, ever. You’re like the big sister I never had!

I am a homeschool mom teacher mom as well. I definitely agree kids don’t need to be in school for 7 hrs a day that’s ridiculous but think about it they aren’t at their desk doing focus work all day. It’s divided GYM, art, lunch reading library etc. but as homeschool parents we have to schedule and build rhythm-routine that makes sense for our home and family which is fabulous. For example I am chronically ill so I don’t have to homeschool early in the morning I can start anytime or day. I can do 6 hrs and that can be 3 days of school I loop so of our group work because my kids are different ages but it works. ❤ my kids can go to the park and do other activities while the public school kids are in school.

I went to college to be a computer engineer and I am a computer engineer, so I do use my degree, meaning the piece of paper I got as a result, because it’s a requirement to get jobs, but most of the things I actually use on my job I could have learned from Google and KZbin, and a lot of it I did.

Thank you for sharing your perspective and for watching! That is quite interesting! I do appreciate that there are workplaces that don’t require formal degrees as well… and I know that Google actually offers various certificates that take a fraction of the time. I feel like there’s just a lot more options out there and with knowledges continuously evolving it makes sense that a lot of it would be readily available online.

I did 2 years of med school but had to drop out because I couldn’t afford it. Anyway, medical stuff is my passion and nobody can prohibit me to learn, read and be up to date by myself. I don’t give medical advice to others but since I have some health issues myself, I come to realise that sometimes I even know more than doctors. I work as a supervisor in a hotel company, which isn’t my passion and I didn’t know anything about but you know what? I don’t really care, it pays the bills and that’s it. Thank you for sharing your story! It stinks too b/c the cost of medical school and school in general is so exorbitant, and people who really would be so passionate about it aren't able to have access :(! And it's crazy too b/c in traditional medicine, they separate the different systems/parts of the body, but really, you have to learn how to treat a human body as a whole b/c it's all connected. Gastro will tell you one thing is wrong but endo will tell you it's something else, b/c they only focus on one part of the whole. Oh you have high blood pressure, here's a pill. But that treats the symptom and not the cause. I too have had some medical issues and when I went to the doctors, they really don't have any answers for me... come to find out, I was able to figure it out on my own just by researching and reading. But yes, at least you are able to continue learning on your own!

Although some learning from a degree or public school may seem useless, school is not just about information being poured into a person’s head. Learning how to deal with people, plan and enact those plans, deal with defeat and frustration and triumph, experience reality, and more is what is learned in school and is difficult to learn in a vacuum and does not get absorbed in a KZbin video or by reading a book. Also, unless a person is shown a wide variety of topics, that person cannot know what they want, even if it is to not want a particular thing. Making mistakes is part of learning and being human, and it is much better to make those mistakes in school than in a career. I am not against homeschooling…I sometimes wish I could’ve done that, but I am against so many people saying their schooling was useless. A person would be way further back in life without the school experiences and practice if that person would look more critically at the skills gained versus specific knowledge points (for example, schooling has given you the ability to read and type, choose applicable search words, and decide which videos fit the information you are looking for information-wise).
@kll815
@kll815 7 ай бұрын
I do believe some adjustments need to be made to the system…but there needs to be a balance between self-directed and communal/group work…because we live in an interconnected social society with individual interests. A person cannot learn patience or perseverance without less than ideal circumstances. There is a definite social agenda at work in the school system that is harmful, and I do worry about the outcome in 20 years, especially because it is worrisome now. Have people been tricked into unfortunate degrees? Absolutely. But that doesn’t mean all education is bad…those tricksters should be shut down and education that will serve individuals and society should be encouraged. I would like to see more solutions being made available and worked through rather than tearing everything down. One way is to encourage more types of learning; trade schools are incredibly useful, and more education there might help shape up the engineers who can’t think practically, for example.
@natashatheresa
@natashatheresa 7 ай бұрын
I love this thoughtful response, thanks!! I think my personal issue with the public school system is that in my experience a lot of it is wasted time lol. Busy work, a way to babysit kids while parents are at work loll. Yes it teaches you to read and write but also, as I mentioned in my video, my kids learned how to read even before they started school. I see the need for basic math and such but I feel like having to sit at a desk for 6 hours a day is not the best way to do it. I just feel there are better more efficient ways to school. That’s why I gravitated towards Montessori bc the kids had more autonomy and choice in what they would learn each day. But also I don’t think too that school needs to be synonymous with learning. Bc learning happens in every moment of every day… it doesn’t have to be in a school setting. So it’s not necessarily that I am saying schooling is all useless, I just feel like there are better ways to learn besides the traditional school system model. Also I speak as a person who was bullied throughout school. I do have my kiddos in a co-oP with other homeschool families a couple times a week and the environment there is so much more positive than a typical school environment. The kids have freedom to speak as they see fit and contribute much more to discussions rather than just being taught a bunch of stuff. But like I said this is just all based on my personal experiences and I’m not speaking for everyone. I just have had the best of both worlds. But if my kids wanna go to college or whatever, we will prepare them for it just not with the traditional school route. Thanks again for watching and for sharing your thoughts!

@@kll815 yes I love this. It would be great to be able to improve upon the current system if at all possible. It’s hard when the government is directly tied to it. I was a nurse so yes I used my degree. I also stopped working to homeschool. There were pros and cons. The biggest pro was flexibility like you spoke of and self direction. How is your experience finding community? I have enjoyed connecting with The Melanin Village. There are some really vibrant Facebook communities to bounce ideas off of too. I hope you are in an area with great co-ops, micro schools, family-centered and youth affirming activities, etc. I think every experience we have creates room for growth. I imagine the photographs from a person with an engineering background differs from those who haven't stretched those specific mental muscles. Finding what we don't like is sometimes essential in determining what we do like, finding what aligns with your gifting and interest. I'm so happy you have been able to unschool yourself and disconnect your school achievement with your current understanding of learning. Enjoy this beautiful journey in interest-led learning and cultivating lifelong learners. It is a gift to learn alongside our children.

I DO use my college degree...kind of? My degree was in music and I am currently the music director at a radio station. That said...I had a LOT to learn on the job about broadcasting and audiences and on air presentation and how programming a radio station is different than programming a recital...rights issues, reporting streams...so much! I have lots of fond memories of my college degree program and if money were no object, I know I'd get a LOT more out of going back for a Masters. But "worth it" is a big, big question. I was 48 when I paid off my student loans. I remember back in the day, calculating that I'd be 50 before paying them off and so, 2 years early was...great??? It was a huge weight lifted off my shoulders when that huge monthly payment wasn't a thing anymore. Ugh! I kinda can't believe we burden all our young, capable society members with that burden like it's no big deal! My hubby and I are doing everything we can to help our kids not have that debt. My older stepdaughter already paid off her student loans. The younger one is just a freshman in college, so we'll have to keep prepping for how that will work for her. Another degree would cost me SO, so much...and at this point in my life, I'd rather use that money for travel. So...there we are.

School destroys children so often , i am happy, that more parents think about it and changes it for their children. Here in Germany it is forbidden, that the kids are learning at home, but more parents fight for their children, so we have around 3000 kids in Germany, who learn at home.

What a great discussion...the public school system does not make sense...I use my degree but could have gotten it through community college much cheaper. College is extremely overrated...and personally I think will crumble at the rate tuition is going

Yeah why is college so expensive… I lucked out that I had a lot of grants so my student debt wasn’t too bad but so many people basically have a mortgage to pay once they graduate and that’s not cool at all. I’m glad you at least are using your degree!

I have never used my degree! We are encouraging our son to learn an actual trade. He is in the electrical program at the college while still in high school.

I love this! Bc there’s always a need for trades and then you can decide to do something else later on if you want or stay there. I know someone who was an electrician and then used that as a nest egg to start real estate photography!
