Portugal does this. I lived there for 5 years and the school times are incredibly flexible and mixed. For example, Monday Tuesday & Wednesday could have a 8:30am start and a 1:30pm finish for the whole day. Thursday and Friday could be 1:30pm-6:30pm which is what I liked most. Or if you’re unlucky, a day could be 8:30am-11:30am, then 3:10pm-6:30pm. Their timetables are incredibly random, but I really liked it. Much better than 8:00-3:00 every day

They always tell us to take off out blazers, tuck our ties into our shirts (if your wearing a jumper it's fine), tie up our hair and if you are wearing a jumper, roll up your sleeves. K83 that’s similar to schools in my country. Schools over here usually start at 7:00am and end at ~1:30-1:45pm for grades 3 and upwards. Obviously, it would end earlier for lower grades- as in; the younger you are, the earlier it ends. HOWEVER! my school starts at 7am and ends at 2:10pm for students in KG1-grade 4, but for grades 5 to 12 it ends at 3:00 or 4:00pm depending on the courses that you take. Did I mention that we have exams nearly every day of the week for grades 5 and upwards? I’m currently on 14 exams a week as a minimum in 10th grade 🙂

K83 I live in Qatar ☺️. But I go to a sabis school, it’s a tough curriculum but you get to choose whether you take O levels or APs and stuff like that(google “sabis schools”). Other normal schools in Qatar don’t have 14 exams a week 😂

I feel that ending school that late in the evening (7 PM) will be detrimental during the winter terms. Going to school, and by 'break' time, it would already be dark / getting dark outside. Is the point in school starting early anyway so that the sun is in the sky throughout the whole day(not sure, but seems likely). I know that it being dark outside doesn't effect me personally as during holidays I quite often wake up at 4-5 pm and go to bed at 8-10 am as that's what fits my daily routine best. As for other people though, I'm not so sure on how they would react about it. Personally, I think a 10 - 11 start would be more acceptable with home-time at 5-ish before tea. This is my view on the situation.

some people have a genuinely different circadian rhythm. as in, some of us are not built to get up at certain times. one can talk about "sleep hygiene", but if ones body clock is simply running on a different time, then it's running on a different time. altering it to fit societal patterns is not the answer. rather, what they are doing here is far more likely to work, more interesting, more logical.

This is amazing! I was diagnosed at 12 with Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, so I ended up going half days or every other day because I had to sleep so much, and doing anything made me tired and hurt a lot (so my sleep quality was horrible and my pain tolerance would plummet, so I'd hurt more, etc, horrible cycle). Even this didn't work so I had to have a teacher come to my house twice a week (a total of three hours) for most of high school. I didn't get to have friends or have the high school experience, didn't go to my graduation (at an award ceremony for being near the top of the class people were wondering who I was and why I was there so I wasn't keen to do that again) and this... this would have been a wonderful option. Mornings are horrific for many people with chronic pain. I couldn't get up for 45 minutes after waking and taking my meds because of pain. On bad days, getting ready took three hours and it took everything I had to do it. And sometimes I just couldn't, until we had to have me homebound. So this kind of thing, wow, it would just really be a great opportunity. This is such a great idea. For kids in general who are so stressed because of the morning rush, but also for those who are ill and need more time.

in japan, in my school we start at classes at 8:50, but we need to go to school in 8:15, during the gap between the start of classes and the time of we get there, we read books and pass all our homeworks to the homeroom teacher and discuss such things and check if there aren’t any other absents. The school sometimes end at 3:30 in mondays, tuesdays, Thursdays and fridays. But only Wednesday has the shortest school time, it ends on 2:15. Sometimes our teacher’s change the schedule when its the holidays, sometimes they make the whole week shorter than usual, which is great.
