When you consider the Russians went through generations being not allowed to listen to real rock music. I know somebody personally that used to smuggle tapes of rock into country during the bad old days. This was the first concert where metal was allowed in, and they got Metallica and Pantera, among others. No wonder why around 100,000 showed up to let loose. Awesome song, awesome moment for metal.

Haha Phil Anselmo wasn't balding, he just went for the shaved look. In the mid to late 90's he had a huge mop on his head but has gone back to the early 90's shaved look. In fact, he's in his 50's now and still has a full hairline and crown. Makes me jealous!!

@rickhenderson2970
@rickhenderson2970 5 жыл бұрын
Pantera is good and all, but metal didn't need saving in the 90s. All Pantera did was save metal as far as the mainstream goes. Tons of great metal bands (better than Pantera, IMO) still going strong outside the mainstream. I'd even be tempted to argue that the early 90s were the best era for metal.
@Wuthahn_
@Wuthahn_ 5 жыл бұрын
@@rickhenderson2970 Yeah that's probably true. With Metallica going all load and reload through the 90s and the rise of grunge there was not much going in the mainstream. For sure the underground did never slow down.
@nolasludge
@nolasludge 5 жыл бұрын
@@rickhenderson2970 Come on man, give credit where credit is due. In the 90s and early 2000s, Pantera and Ozzy were the only bands playing arenas that were taking metal bands on the road with them. Pantera took bands like Crowbar, Eyehategod, and Morbid Angel with them on arena tours. So many people saw those bands because Pantera took them out on the road. Who cares who is better or who isn't. That's just a stupid argument about musical tastes. The fact is, Pantera held the weight on their back, and they did it proudly, which is why people credit them for "saving" metal in the 90s. Back then, Metallica were touring by themselves for the most part, with no opening act. Pantera took bands under their wing.
@rickhenderson2970
@rickhenderson2970 5 жыл бұрын
@@nolasludge You basically reiterated what I said about Pantera "saving metal" FOR THE MAINSTREAM, which is fine/laudable and all, but metal has never been about the mainstream and, if anything, has usually been anti-mainstream. The bigger point is that metal didn't need the mainstream and thus didn't need "saving." So what that Metallica, Megadeth, Maiden, Priest, etc. went to shit in the 90s? We also had new(er) bands like Death, Opeth, Dream Theater, Emperor, Meshuggah, Immortal and so many others coming along. All of which would've been fine (WERE fine) without the mainstream and Pantera. Same with Morbid Angel, even if they did tour with Pantera.

Briefly as I can, and as far as I know, what happened was: In 1991 the Soviet Union was dissolving. In August, there had been an attempted military coup to wrestle control from the government. It failed because the people, sick of being isolated from the West and hopeful that the collapse would lead to a better future, would not support it. Mikhail Gorbachev, wanting to reward the people for this act of loyalty (nomatter the motive), asked that the Monsters of Rock Festival, usually held at Castle Donington, England, be held in Russia this year. This was quite literally revolutionary, and amazingly, happened. They called it Monsters in Moscow, and, again as a gift to the loyal people of the Soviet Union, Gorbachev insisted it be free. The resultant crowd was said to be in excess of 1.6m, though some estimates have it at well over 2m. It is listed as something like the fourth largest concert in history. Concerns that the people, isolated from Western culture, would not be familiar with the bands were unfounded. A significant number of them can be seen wearing the T-shirts and singing every word of the songs. There are better shots of the crowd in videos of Metallica's incredible performance of Creeping Death.

Also take note that back then, the Soviet government had never heard of or even experienced the sound of Western music, especially metal. They were so disconnected with the people, desperate to hear more music from the West, that the soldiers would actually beat the crowd with rubber batons because they saw a “mosh pit” as an act of aggression that needed to be controlled. You can also read up about how the crowd was so wild that people actually died at the concert. Even the bands never knew about the deaths until after the show because there was so many people there.

Yes!!! Juliette, you and I have the same hair, and it is great head banging hair!! That was awesome. I have seen Pantera more than any other band, to this day. I grew up not far from them and went to almost every concert in Texas. Phil Anselmo is not bald, not to this day. As far as fashion, they just wanted to get away that glam look. Why not just dress in what’s comfortable. Phil went from long hair, to Mohawk, to bald, to long hair and a huge beard. They were just different and innovated and different, fashion wise and music wise. They perfected the southern metal sound. Crazy shows. I used to get butterflies in my stomach before each show because I knew I would come out of that mosh pit bloodied and injured. Worst injury was a completely dislocated shoulder. One of the best bands ever. Texas represent. Cowboy from hell, for life. RIP Vinnie and Dime. Good first attempt at headbanging Juliette. The hair action was excellent, and the feel/timing will improve with practice. I was a big Pantera fan in the 90's but this was actually my first time seeing this live performance. Lots of energy and excellent musicianship. Phil seemed a little out of breath on some of the lyrics, but that's understandable given his intense physical exertion. It would be interesting to see what you think of the album version after being introduced to this song live first. I must admit it's kind of sad to watch Vinnie and Darrell so young and full of life. It still feels so tragic to lose Darrell under such crazy and truly unfortunate circumstances.

One of my best friends purchased Pantera - 'Projects In The Jungle'...Pantera's 2nd album, when it came out in 1984. Our local record store got all kinds of cool, unheard-of metal records back then. All I remember about it is that we both really thought the guitar player was the 'star' of the band. Fast-forward to 1990 and I was in the US Air Force living in the dorms, a fellow metalhead came up to me with Pantera - 'Cowboys From Hell' album and was like "Dude, you gotta hear these guys!" I was like, Pantera? I know that band! Listened to it and thought, ok, these guys sound a lot different now! 🙂

So glad to see people smart enough to understand the meaning behind lyrics, instead of all the people who are clueless and spout nonsense. Your daughter seems very informed and intelligent. You have obviously spent time conversing with her and educating her. Keep it metal.

Pantera was one of the first metal bands I ever heard. I remember where I was when I heard Dimebag was shot, but I didn’t know Vinnie was dead as well. Sad to hear it but thanks for the info!

Albums 1-3 Pure glam metal. There's still great songs even in those albums. Power Metal (first with Phil Anselmo) is a stellar heavy metal album and it's a very underrated gem. Cowboys from hell. Their best album. So you were right in some parts, but the first heavy metal album from them was Power Metal in 1988.

I was a relatively new, young guitar player who had recently discovered Dime and Pantera when I heard about Dime's death on a guitar forum. One of the first times I remember being in complete shock over a "celebrity" death.

Great song and great reaction and good choice for the first headbang. 🤘 Juliette looked fabulous doing it, if I may say so :) Next up is: Wintersun - Sons of Winter and Stars Live at Sonic Pump Studios Remaster (Uploaded by WintersunJari) And a band I discovered for myself just last week. -> Orions Reign - Elder Blood (2019) Official Video Oh and I was wondering, didn't you guys upload Nightwish - The Poet and The Pendulum? I was sure to have seen it but when I had time to watch it, the video vanished. Did I dream this? 🤔 😂

The bass player's name is Rex Brown. Sorry if you did but I didn't hear a mention of him. He definitely deserves more credit for his work in pantera, especially on the far beyond driven and reinventing the steel albums.

Actually Moscow can get pretty hot in the summer. It's the inland climate. Think the US Midwest. Hot summers and cold winters. But the festival took place in september of '91. Great headbanging! And I love your lyrical breakdowns!

Temperature is always relative to where you live I think. I would probably have found it hot when I lived in Northern Canada. But an average high of 24C/76F in the hottest month of July (wikipedia) is cool compared to where we live right now in New Jersey. Given where Moscow is located on the continent, I'm sure there are some pretty wild shifts in temperature though. Weather discussion aside, thanks for the comment and glad you appreciate!

The people who attended this concert were those who supported the downfall of the Soviet Union, because they were tired of the extreme censorship and tyranny. Previous to this concert, it was banned to listen to heavy music because it encourages or at least helps to encourage the rebelling attitude. This concert was summer of 1991, and only a few months later, the Union totally collapsed. Who knows, maybe the "Monsters of rock" concert helped a little bit with the collapse? pls do more from this concert.
