What I love is that Jack's character talks to the kids like they're people, he doesn't automatically see them as stupid/dumb because they're young.

Mike White, who plays Ned, wrote the movie. Looking at his credits it's pretty understandable how he has written such a natural sounding movie that doesn't smack you in the face with a message or talk down to the audience. He's written and produced episodes for Dawson's Creek and Freeks and Geeks so he knows how to write for a teenage audience. He also created Enlightened and The White Lotus and wrote Orange County, The Good Girl and Nacho Libre so he's just a very good filmmaker overall. His writing with Jack Blacks acting and improve skills was a recipe for success.

One aspect i love about this move is how JB's character goes from being a slacker pulling a scheme to get a quick buck, to an actual, competent teacher, he teaches the kids music theory, history of rock, he makes a syllabus, he selects records for each kid to inspire their respective instrument playing, etc.., if you look at the "History of Rock" diagram he shows to the class, that thing looks intricate as hell and probably not something he could write in an afternoon. He realizes he's being a positive impact on them, so he starts preparing his classes, learning how to connect with the kids and actually putting effort in something since the first time in probably ever. The movie is as much about Jack Black helping the kids as it is about the kids helping Jack Black

One of the most insane things about this movie (to me, at least) is the big battle of the bands concert with very many attendees HAPPENING DURING SCHOOL HOURS. Like, what clubs are even OPEN before 3PM?! The timing of the battle of the bands is, imo, the least realistic or believable thing about the entire movie.

@@Optable While that is a fair point, I have a couple counterpoints to that. 1) It was initially proposed by JB's character to be a class field trip, so it would have to be during school hours, especially without any parent chaperones. (Remember, it takes place in America, and American schools don't tend to have out-of-hours field trips except for big, pre-planned/annual events, at least in my experience.) And 2) while I don't have first-hand knowledge of battles of the bands, I feel like 7 PM would be the *earliest* such an event would start, and it seemed like the kids picked up JB's character from home waaay too early for that to be the case. Also, I'd imagine such an event would normally be reserved for Friday or Saturday nights, and (in my limited experience) schools tend to have parents' nights during the beginning or middle of the week, not on Fridays. Obviously, I'm sure there are exceptions, but those are the generalizations I'm going with.

This movie actually makes me cry. I know its not supposed to be sad, but I was an artist, then turned into an english/social studies teacher for fourth and fifth graders. My teaching style was a lot like how Jack Black is in this movie and the kids loved it. They learned to love themselves, they really liked me as a teacher, and they learned to get along and do better in school.... but one day I was observed by the admin and she did NOT like my methods and so they brought in someone from the state to observe me twice a week. I basically had to turn into a stuffy mean teacher or else I would get fired. I was threated with termination multiple times, or being replaced wih my aide. I went home crying almost every day because a lot of those kids really needed help that i was no longer able to give, and many came from unstable homes where their teacher was the only stability and care they got. their grades plumetted and of course i was blamed for it. nothing i did was ever right. I got married that summer and never went back. Every now and then I still run into those kids and they tell me I'm still their most favorite teacher they ever had, and they did learn a lot in my class. i've kept all their notes and letters, but i will never be a teacher again. Teaching is a hard gig in this country, especially if you truly care about every kid.

Jack Black is just one of those guys that, when you see he's casted in a movie, you know that whatever part he's gonna play will be the highlight of the entire production.

One of the greatest single performances from a frontman role in movie history. I'd argue Top 10 ever, and without him here this incredible movie doesn't exist. Oh man, that line about how kids are creating their own permanent record online is SO TRUE. My friend (in her 30's) lost her teaching job at a private religious school because of decades old posts on her private Facebook page that contained a curse word or were about celebrating Halloween. Someone on her "friends" list printed them out to show the principal to say she isn't fit to teach at their school. It was ridiculous.

Think I first watched this movie in 2015. At the time (and of course, to this day) I was into classic rock, hard rock, metal etc, thus compelling me to watch this. But the message is more than just "rock rules, classical music sucks, rebel against your parents!" Like Alex said it's portrayed beautifully how he inspires the kids, grows a relationship with them, and helps them develop talents they didn't know they had. And it comes off so organically and not forced like it would if it was made today. Great movie!

Runs the show, moves the show, balances the plot, adds wholesome comedy, and unknowingly steals the show all in one frontman screen leading performance of a lifetime. I think a big part of why early 2000's movies felt that way was because 2008 hadn't happened yet. We watch early 2000's movies now and are like "that guy punching an alien t-rex in the face can afford a three story house on a McDonald's salary, that's so unrealistic".

@@toasega I’ve talked to my parents before about what they think the biggest differences between the 2000s and now are. Both of them have said that 1. Cellphones and social media weren’t as prevalent as they are now, and 2. People were generally way less cynical than they are now. My dad said there were still a lot of people who were angry all the time, but that wasn’t the standard and it didn’t seep into everything like it seems to now. He attributes this change mainly to 1, social media, but I say that like everything it has to be multi-factorial.

This was my favorite film from back then. I was in like 3rd or 4th grade when it came out and I loved it. Soon as the DVD came out, I asked for it and got it lol your video helped me realize why I liked it so much, because of how natural it was. I remember I read something (And forgive me for my oversimplification) about the tragedy in film culture which is the loss of "the family movie". A movie that parents and kids could like for the SAME reasons and watch together. It wasn't something you put on the ipad and left your kid with, it wasn't something you hid on your laptop so your parents wouldn't find out you were watching a "grown up" film, it was something everyone in the house gathered around for, and thoroughly enjoyed AS A FAMILY. I think the closest thing we've gotten as of recently is "Mitchells vs The Machines" (Which was STILL very bare bones and a little too 'kiddy' for me, but still a family film) because you could tell the people who wrote it... HAD kids, and understood how parents and children acted together. EDIT: I also want to make it clear that I do not count fantasy movies in this description. This is specifically about family centered sitcoms and movies, not about fantasy, which- while it can have the same appeals, is ultimately more story driven and adventure oriented next to solely being a story about a family. I can't explain this in a way that makes sense for some reason, so I hope you get what I mean.

Hulu’s Grimcutty is a good family horror film with a good family message.

The problem is people just stopped going to these kind of movies. I saw Are you there God? It's Me Margaret last month and it was exactly the kind of family film that did not talk down to kids and was also one of the best films I've seen all year...and it was playing in a mostly empty theater. I don't know whether it's because it's too expensive to take a family to theaters these days or the advent of streaming causing parents to just play something on Netflix for their kids to keep them distracted but when even great family films flop in theaters it's not hard to see why studios have abandoned them.

This was never a childhood movie for me, but I loved it when I first watched it as an adult. It makes up for all the missed nostalgia by being chaotic as heck.
