Thanks. I haven't thought about reading thru Republic in this format. Do you think it would be interesting? I do have a series of Republic videos from a few years ago: kzbin.info/aero/PLPCGA67J8M2JwTMyRv7uBwI3dlHtq4YVU

Plato's Republic is full of wisdom. I bought/studied the book in college. I am 60 now, and I still revisit it to reaffirm my conduct.

I presume you're an Academic Chris ! Many decades ago when I went to university in Scotland - I couldn't stand the teachers there. And having worked in academia most people - well let's just say I never liked them. But you yourself over the medium of a video seem to be a very likeable guy 😊 ! A genuine compliment from someone who doesn't give compliments.

Anyone who is young and read Schopenhauer for the first time ! Abide by what he says about life. Speaking through experience I disregarded the lessons he teaches you about life. I thought happiness was out there in some exotic place. I rushed out to welcome it and fell into the arms of pain.

@@al4527 Thanks for your reply. Young or not limit your claims in this world to "happiness " and I promise you from an older and wiser and chastened man that you will lead a more content life! Best wishes.

Basically people can’t mind their own business. Keep your life for and only to yourself. Silence is almost always better.

Through conversation we find and develop your ideas. Of course silent thinking is good too.

This is apt for not causing new problems but doesn’t work well for resolving extant problems. I always say “if silence is compliance and compliance gets you killed, then why be silent?”

Lol keep location quiet. Keep names quiet. I guess this is just in the public space. Close friends a little more relaxed (otherwise they're not your friends)

Telling a secret like vertigo, you get scared thinking it's real (thinking people know you're secret) so you tell it

Im surprised that he didn't coin the widely circulated ' no good deed goes unpunished ' truism, although one can see a logical derivation there from his astute observation that most of ones troubles are to do with other people.

But for social qualms, ive been looking for a reason to argue against my inner babbling and find that the tree of silence, bears the fruit of peace.

Keep your secrets... unless you're looking at 15 to 20 years in the federal penitentiary. Then say just enough to implicate your accomplices after you negotiate a deal with the authorities. No honor amongst drug dealers and thieves.
