I've been using primitive fire making methods since 1967. I've spent weeks and months at a time in the wilderness. Literally hundreds of days and nights in the bush, living "aux aliments du pays". I would never presume to think that I know everything. There is always something new to learn. And I believe any self respecting 'bushcraft' or 'survival' practitioner would agree. One of the most important things in life is to teach others how to be self sufficient. And the confidence that comes from wilderness skills carries over into every aspect of modern life. Keep doing what you do, my friend. The next generation will be better because of it.

I'm sure you may already know, but many new ferro rods have a slight coating on them from the factory. You have to work them a little bit before you are going to get a good steady spark. For the sake of the video you did the right thing.

Sir Bryan, hello my name is Patrick . I am a wannabe. I wanna learn from as many people as possible. I learn a lot from the things you share. I started outrevr in cub scouts and stuck with scouting through being president of my explorer post 514. A law enforcement post sponsored by the Gwinnett county police department. I thank you for your dedication and commitment to scouting. I appreciate the time and effort you put into your production of the videos and reviews on your channel. If the haters only knew what went into productions that you and all the others on the KZbin site have to go thru to make these reviews and videos they wouldn't be so quick to judge. Anyway I hope that you can add me to your list of wannabe Bushcrafting enthusiasts. Thank you for all you do.

HA HA...still love that Salsa music! Regarding the Wannabe thing... I just have to throw my two cents in... a human's propensity for taking things for granted is in full bloom on KZbin; after a while, some people appear to take for granted that the videographer is portraying him/her self as an instructor of some kind, instead of a Presenter. We viewers seem to lose the ability to discriminate one type of video from another--let's say, the Pathfinder School from the Scoutmaster on Survival on Purpose. In my humble opinion, we do need to be reminded from time to time that this is so. Frankly, I like your "down home" presentation style and honest opinions, and hope you don't change. Thank you, Brian for all your hard work; I know it ain't easy to produce worthwhile videos, and yours are some of the best. I'll be back! :)

Just wanted to Thank You for another great Vid ! Much appreciated. These are a great little pack Axe. I have the one in Black and love it. In reference to your mention of the hole that is through the head just under the hammer poll, when i first saw this I instantly saw it as a means of repairing this axe out in the boonies if you break the handle. I would simply use it for an anchor point. Just find a good limb and with a little carving and notch work with yer favorite Bush knife, a little lashing (was me I'd just peg it N then lash it) You'd still have a serviceable little Axe . Or if ya have a deep Passion fer lanyard's (Hate em Myself ) ya could always run a temporary one thru that hole if you are trying to do some kind a carving with yer axe that might stable ya up a bit. But, anyhow,, what do i know, I'm just a wannabe with a over active imagination. Once again, Many Thanks !

I'm a woman that loves these survival videos. I just moved to a house on to a mountain with my dogs and I cut my own trees for firewood and like to build things using as much natural material as I can. I like your videos very much. The axe didn't appear to be very sharp. Can you please make comments on the sharpness and best way to sharpen an axe. I have 7 axes of different lengths and weight but I'm not sure if I'm sharpening them correctly. And how do you test for shapeness?
@SurvivalOnPurpose9 жыл бұрын
Carol Olivie It was decent. There are several different ways to sharpen an axe, depending on how dull it is and how sharp you want it. My favorite way is to use a file to clean up a rough edge and then use progressively finer grits of stone or diamond to refine the edge. If you have a Worksharp that probably does a good job on axes because it does a slight convex grind and that is a good axe edge profile. If not, just use a Lansky puck or any flat natural or diamond stones. Of even a diamond or ceramic rod will work, again depending on the condition of the edge. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching. Only about 5% of my views are from those of you of the female persuasion so I enjoy hearing from you.

I like their camp axes, but, I do prefer the good ole wood handles, because at least if you break it and you know what you doing, you can make another one, the schrades may break in extreme cold, but I do believe that bushcraftbarton did a review with a schrade camp ax and it help up in the extreme cold, he does just about every vid in the snow in Canada

Hey Bryan yeah it must need to be a lot a bit better considering you had to use the edge in order to get a decent spark of the firesteel... There is nothing wrong with using a baton with a knife. In real life no matter how well you prepare things can go wrong. If all you had was a knife then that is the correct course of action. I would rather use my knife and baton to create a fire then not have a fire or even waste more time trying to figure out a way not to use my knife to make a fire. Survival is using what you have to keep on living.

So, just out of curiosity, how does this compare to lets say a mora camp axe ( I think thats what they are called but dunno) and a fiskars x7. Im also a "wanna be", better informed about this stuff in this case. :) Cool video and also, yes I trust that you did not cheat on the fire. Have a nice day.

I'm a wanna-be too :) I wanna be better too, we all should be, because when you stop learning that's when you become complacent and get hurt. No one knows it all, and the haters are almost always the ones that sit on their keyboard and never step in the woods. They are the true wannabes lol. Keep on Keepin on with what you do! Atb, Dawn

Awesome job on that fire Brian. I have that axe but in the black, I love it. Love all my Schrade products. I too will join the Wannabe Club. I wannabe knowledgeable, I wannabe safe, and I wannabe able to survive. Keep up the good work, haters gonna hate cause they can't even find the woods. Atb. Diane.
