There was a time when I ignored a knife like the SCHF36 and others in the Schrade line such as, for example, the new for 2015 SCHF42 and SCHF51, only because they are considered budget. I'm embarrassed to admit it, but that makes me a snob. There can be no question that most often cost is a factor when considering a quality knife. These Schrade, however, push the edge of the envelope. For the cost they are an extremely good knife that hold their own.

I don't think you're in anybody's pocket Chris, I've been watching your videos for a long time and I've seen you break Schrade products, expose flaws, and give not so stellar reviews to some. And a lot of people are going to bag on brands that produce low end and mid-range knives and anyone who doesn't join them in the bash-fest - but some of those low end knives are better than others, some are junk and others are of good quality for the price. I like the testing and I like seeing the knives being used, and discussions about the sheath, which is an important consideration when buying a knife that a lot of people gloss over - and I like that you spend a lot of time with the low end knives. Even people who have expensive high end knives might not want to spend that kind of money on extra knives that they have in their vehicle, in bug out bags, leave at their hunting cabin, give to their kids, or keep as loaners and extras. I tend not to watch reviews of products with a price point much over $50. I've got a custom knife (given me by a knife maker friend of mine) that's worth several hundred dollars easily, and for that reason I won't ever use it, it will sit in a drawer and I'll take it out and look at it sometimes, but I'll go into the woods with my $20-$40 knife that I don't care if I nick the blade or tear up the scales (though I do take care to avoid those things). Keep doing what you're doing.

I just got mine yesterday but it's the SCHF37 and I've used it and absolutely love this knife. Quality control has indeed improved and have no issues with mine and it's not crooked or anything like some people in the past have claimed that this knife was notorious for. Absolutely well worth the money and my daughter was impressed that she wants to buy the SCHf36, this knife you just reviewed. It's an awesome deal, think about it, what knife could you possibly buy under $60 that's 1095, comes with Ferro rod, diamond sharpener, and has a flat spine to actually use the ferro rod fight out the box???? Schrade has redeemed themselves in my eyes! and proudly keep my SCHF37 alongside my Beckers and Ontarios!! Well said and well done!!!

I like this Buschcraft knife review of the SCHF36 as it is done in a way to show the knife in its true form no editing no fancy camera angles, just from the box to the bush. For it's size and Brand reputation this knife should quickly climb the ranks.

Hi Chris, Despite the age of this video I believe my comment is relevant and I wanted to pass along the information to your viewers. Yesterday, 10 March 2019 I sent this letter to Schrade via e-mail: “Hello everyone. While teaching how to process wood as part of a Winter Wilderness Emergency Care course the blade of an Schrade SCHF36 broke at the edge. The knife was being used reasonably and within the accepted limits of a bush-craft knife and was well maintained. It was approximately 14-months old and used specifically for teaching three classes per year. (Fall and winter) One possible factor, (?) when the knife was being worked the temperature was in the low teens. Despite the damage the knife continued to be used during the weekend processing wood, cutting 1/2 in NFPA compliant rescue rope, camp chores and fire starting. Nicely done... I am requesting a replacement. Please advise. Thank you, take care, Garv PS: I have a few pictures.” Less than 24-hours later I received a notice that a replacement knife was on the way. That is outstanding customer service and I want the viewers of this video to know that Schrade stands by its products and is a company you can count on. I teach several outdoor skill-sets professionally for a major Federal alphabet and own high-end bush-craft/survival knives; I own beaters and I own and use solid day-to-day knives like the Schrade SCHF36 when teaching. Some may argue that the knife should not have broken; it did, stuff happens. What is important is that the knife was promptly replaced without any nonsense. I appreciate to opportunity to comment; thank you and take care. Garv

I think they only accuse you of Schrade bias and not Ka-Bar bias is because you mainly get stuff sent to you from Schrade and not Ka-Bar. I think its irrelevant where you get and how you get gear. Gear review is just a gear review. I dig the way you review stuff and I believe you are 100% fair on everything you review Chris. Keep UM coming man.

Love the looks of the SCHF36. However, it's the material (1095 High Carbon Steel) and the manufacturing process and the honesty of the 'cons' or should I say 'con' (coating) that sold me on this knife. If it can't hold up to what it's made for, it's just another toothpick. Nice work.

This blade is very similar to the Blackheart Gunner 10. And the funny thing is, the SCHF37 is nearly identical to the Blackheart Gunner 12. I've always wanted a Gunner 10 and 12, but never wanted to spend about 1,000 USD, but now here's my chance.

On a side note, the Tops knife I broke the tip off was an Intercepter with tanto point. I pryed the latch open on my tailgate when it froze up, so it wasn't the manufacturers fault since I used the blade for a purpose of a pry bar. However Tops still offered to redo a point and recoat the blade free of charge, I just pay shipping. Important lesson: use the correct tools for the job! Lol. I learned my lesson the hard way...

I am really interested in the Schrade knives and I really appreciate the honest reviews, Chris. I had one Schrade that I didn't really like at all, it was the large hollow handed clip point one that was 1 piece of 1075. Besides that I only have a bk2 which is terrible in my opinion. I need to save some money for one of these new schrades to replace my two crappy fixed blades haha. Thanks for keeping it real with the reviews.

Great review Chris! We don't care about the haters, after all, you already said awhile back that you didn't particularly like Schrade, but they made some changes and you took another look. To me that's pretty even-handed. Just quickly, I need your advice on a Schrade purchase, a SCHF9 to be specific. When I got the knife I was really disappointed with the build quality. The handle scales looked like they shrunk, as there was a good 1/8 of tang sticking out the bottom. Not like the one you got, which looked about even with the tang. I thought I could live with it, but the edge wasn't sharp at all. So I took to a Cutlery shop that said they sharpen large outdoor/survival knives. Unfortunately, the guy made a mess of it. So I'm left with more of a dangerous Paperweight than a useful knife. I really like the new SCHF36, but I can't afford another lemon. What do you recommend at this point? Should I just start looking at Cold Steel and Condor?

PREPAREDMIND101 Thanks for your quick response!! What I want is not to get screwed again. I mean when I saw your review of the new SCHF36 I knew it was exactly what I am looking for. But if I wait till 2015 and then order one through your Amazon store, hoping that it looks exactly like the one you reviewed, and then get another bad QC job, I'll go really nuts! But I'll send an Email to Russell Taylor, like you recommended, maybe I can help someone else avoid getting screwed like me. Since I was Laid-Off I have to make sure that I get what I pay for, as I can't afford to buy twice!! Keep those great reviews coming, you're the bomb!

This knife is a heck of a lot of knife for the money. Holds a razor edge and as tough as they come. Who cares if the coating wears off that's what gun oil is for. I bought mine to use in rugged camp chore duty not to show in display. For 30 dollars you really can't beat it. Thing is you can knock around this good working knife and save your 150 dollar stag Puma Bowie for more prestigious duties.

I love the review, very detailed, but very very long. I appreciate all the detailed review, condense it to half the length please. It hurts me to sit up on long time at the computer being a quadriplegic, so the shorter the better kind of. But that's only in my situation. So now that I think about it, do what you want LOL I personally love Schrade products and am trying to get enough to make a great display in my house and since I can't use them, only drool over them, I like the coding but since I'm allowing anyone to use my Schrade products. I'm glad to know about the coating. So thank you

I like Schrade knives. They really seem to step up their game as far as knife design and quality of their steel. Others mention comparing them to Tops or KaBar, but you will have to compare those that are similar in steel and design. I have broke a tip off a Tops knife so far, and broke many cheap knives. KaBar I have not owned yet. My Schf9 seems to take a beating and keep on going. I believe its due to the 1095, and the blade design. It works for me, thats what matters...

Any knife CAN break. I recall Ontario (USA MADE) RTAK-2s shattering in the edge in the sweet spot. That was 1095. Protest heat treat matters. People should try this little experiment: type a knife company name + "FAIL" into the KZbin search bar. You might be surprised what you find.

In your opinion, is there any resemblance to the Survive Knives GSO 5.1 and GSO 7/7 and these knives? I have been seriously considering ordering one of the GSO knives but can't bring myself to spend that much money on a blade. These seem as if they have very similar blade profiles and grinds. The handle isn't very close but from the choil forward they are eerily similar.

I have a tops BOB and as we know the tops Bob does not strip bark off of a tree and does not strike a Fire steel very well but it's a great knife so I think this would make a great secondary knife I just need to know when it's going to come out and the price point I think this would be a good combination of knifes out in the bush.what do you think?
