Hey Brian, I went ahead and bought the 37M. I stripped the (lousy) finish, and after a failure with paint, ended up letting the blade soak in Muriatic acid for the better part of a day. The stainless "patina-ed" into a nice shade of dark gray. I suspect it won't hold up very well under hard use, but only time will tell. Keep up the good work!

This has been a great knife for my family for the last two years. We have used it extensively. It does everything you could need to. The blade is very durable and forgiving. I did inadvertently hit a small rock while chopping a branch on the ground: the blade did not chip, but it did roll the edge where it made contact with the rock. However it was small enough that it was easy to fix with a moderate amount of sharpening. You couldn't really ask for more from the knife itself. However, understandably (at this price point) the sheath had to be replaced within the first year. Actually, the sheath itself is tough and relatively durable: it was the extremely cheap dollar store grade Velcro used for the belt loop that gave out. It simply ceased to function. Still, if you are willing to replace the sheath with an upgrade, this could be an excellent option. With the thick spine and micarta handle, this knife could last Indefinitely.

I agree, why would anyone ask such a stupid question if you could throw that knife, it's a Bushcraft knife! I know you throw your knives because you're good at it, not because your looking for a perfect knife to throw. I also forgot that I have a Cold Steel Luzon made with 8Cr13mov so I know that the HRC on that is 58.1 and never had any problems with it. That said, I most likely will buy this knife. I love bushcraft knives!

Hiya Bryan, I pulled the trigger on the SCHF 36 & 37 then I found your video's so first order of business will be to change the order to micarta scales, it's still a great buy I just hope Schrade did something about the failure's I always though Schrade made some fine looking knives, I'm adding either my Gerber Freeman Guide or my Profile my 14" Estwing Hatchet and my Corona Saw, it still a very reasonable price usually I pay that much for just one knife, I just wish Schrade did their homework on the failures, Thanx Bryan for turning me on to the micarta hanes.

Cool, a straight blade version of the SCHF10 although larger. I am glad they made this available. I have seen the SCHF36 and SCHF37 and while I like them both it's great they offer the SCHF38 with the more pointed blade tip. They seem intent on giving us more choices. While I like and own carbon steel knives, Florida's humidity makes rust a common problem so the option of the more rust resistant steel is appreciated.

That "purple part" is called heart wood which is the more dense part of the wood which means its heavier, also it is the part that will start rotting first so majority of the time its softer depending on the time of the year and how green the wood is, the shade of purple it is seems like you were into winter so it was probably frozen which is why it was so hard(btw i jnow this because ive been working with cedar all year round for 2 and a half years

Great video, and the knife looks good. I agree, that the 8Cr13Mov steel is better for areas like Florida where we are surrounded by salt water, and affected by a humid climate for half of the year at least. I would like to purchase one of the new Schrade knives, but I guess I will have to wait until 2015. I don't like the coating, so I would probably remove it.

I talked to Schrade about the steel in this knife . It actually cost them a little more than 1095 and is considered a little better steel. They are very confident in their heat treatment and, based on some torture tests I've seen on other Schrade knives with 8Cr13Mov, I can't disagree. The only drawback to this or any other stainless is you can't get sparks from a rock. The reality is a lot of carbon steel knives don;t work very well for that either. Try getting a piece of charcloth lit sometime with several carbon steel blades and you might see a big difference between blades.

I like them both (knives). I agree on coatings I think I might strip that condor. But that's a nice larger outdoor knife, nice and robust and I'm sure it's well made. I know on my carbon steel blades and other tools in general I got to keep after them probably due to my location, lots of humidity, 5 miles from the Ocean. Not that they are bad knives or tools quite the contrary. But stainless is actually a good option. I mean I haven't had too much success (any) with flint and steel stuff using the back of a knife. Not to say that you can't a lot of guys out there recommend that for a reason.

I like the look of the blade; the thick spine makes for a reliable self-sufficiency and emergency survival tool; the heavy looking blade with thick steel, and tapered pommel lends itself to window-breaking, which adds the purpose of window-breaking to its repertoir. It is alos well-shaped for knapping, and basic hammer work. The handle-scales look comfortable, and the blade has some good, strong features to aid its practicality. The most prominent feature of the blade is the long, shallow flat-grind with terminal v-grind, which creates a strong cutting edge, unlikely to break and easy to sharpen using stones, bricks, or glass, but at the same time not sacrificing too much sharpness - the shallow angle of the pre-terminal grind allows for the blade to be thinned gradually, creating a good balance of sharpness and durability. The black powder-coat creates a tactical appearance that also lends itself to using the knife as a weapon; it would be more effective at cutting than stabbing, or alternatively, it would make a good truncheon when using the blunt edge. All these features combined with the 8CR13MOV steel creates a stain-resistant tool with good longevity, which is the number 1 priority for a survival tool in the field. My questions reguarding this knife would be related to the heat-treatment, the general hardness, and why it's coated.

I like this style of knife, but what's the Rockwell Hardness of it? I'm seriously thinking of buying this knife but I love using my knives a lot indoors and outdoors and I've been staying away from these Chinese steels and sticking with the Ontario's and Beckers because of their great edge retention, in fact, Carbon steel such as 1095, 5160 is all I do own as far as knives go but I really like the handle, blade style, and the couple things this knife comes with, but I absolutely hate having to stop what I'm doing just to sharpen a knife and haven't experienced this problem in years which is why I sold off ALL my Schrade, Mtech, SZCO knives and rebuilt my collection with high carbon blades which I haven't sharpened in a very long time, I just hone them with a rod and it's good to go, but now I'm faced with this decision in getting this knife but I wonder about it's edge retention. Is it good steel? will it last me all day out in the wilderness with absolutely no touch-ups or sharpening?

I also watched your video on the Schrade SCHF3N and wanted to know what you thought about it compared to the SCHF37M. The blade on the 3N is only slighty shorter but the handle seems to fit the hand better. Another person did not like the 37M jimping on the handle, said it was uncomfortable to chop with. What did you think? Trying to choose which to buy,
@SurvivalOnPurpose

Thy are 2 pretty different designs with really different handle ergonomics. I personally prefer the 37 but that is just my preference. Actually, I REALLY prefer the SCHF52M which will be released for sale very soon (a few more weeks).

DShiflet01 You and me both, and almost every other person I have heard from. Schrade says there are no plans right now to do that. They also told me that in many ways the 8cr13mov steel is superior to 1095 and actually cost them a little more. I guess you could buy one of each, swap the handles and sell the ss version. I have to say, the 8cr13mov one I tested is an excellent knife.

Excellent video, thank you. I'm fairly new at getting into camping, fire-building, backpacking, etc. Bought an SCHF10, which seems to be a little brother to that knife. Same handles & blade material but different blade shape & shorter. I generally have used it for batoning some firewood & it seems to have gotten dull pretty quick. I know 1095 seems to be the preferred steel for this type of stuff, so I thought that might be the reason. I am looking into getting a bigger blade maybe trying 1095. Schrade's prices are awfully hard to beat, in your opinion is it worth spending the extra money on an Esee or Ka-Bar? Overall thoughts?
@SurvivalOnPurpose
@SurvivalOnPurpose 9 жыл бұрын
***** I don't have an Esee or a Kabar, so I can only talk about what I've seen from handling my friends' knives. Here's how I look at choices like that. It's kind of like asking if it's worth it to get the Acura instead of the Honda. Both are good choices, it just depends on your taste and perceived value. Based on what I've see, Esee and some Kabars probably have a better fit and finish. They just look a little more "polished". Most of them also cost about 2 or 3 times what these Schrades do. Are they 3 times as good? Back to the Acura vs Honda question. I guess I'd say if you have the budget and just prefer the way one knife looks over another, get what you like. If you go with a respected maker you'll probably be happy. If, on the other hand, your budget isn't quite as flexible, go with one of these and spend the extra on another needed item. You won;' be disappointed, these are excellent knives, in my opinion. And as for the steel type, heat treat is so important to edge retention. With that being said, 1095 is generally considered harder than 1075 so it might hold an edge a little better. Anyway, I guess these are my overall thoughts. Probably didn't help much, huh?
@j0shll0yd
@j0shll0yd 9 жыл бұрын
Well yes basically you did. I agree with what you said, I guess what my question comes down to is, is Schrade's 1095 the same quality as an Esee or a Ka-Bar? Like you said, heat treating is a lot, I just haven't found much info on their heat treating. I suppose Schrade's price scares me a little making me wonder wear they skimped to be able to make their prices so cheap.

My Gerber Profile is an 7CR 13MOV, and Gerber said it's similar to a 440a Stainless, and yet, I feel my Profile is a pretty good knife, oh, by the way, sorry on yours, even though you got another one from them, can this knife be similar to a 440b, I really like the looks of this knife, I luv a choil, it's like two knives in one, I can choke up, or swing long, to chop, I know it won't replace my Rodent 7, or my Sarge 7, but mine are more expensive too, also, I'm a Saber Grind guy, after you used this knife for a while, how does the edge hold up, I was thinking of getting this one, or should I just stay with mine, oh yeah, I also have the BK-7, and I also have (2) Cold Steel Recon Scouts, one I use, the other one is virgin, and I luv the BK-7, and all of my 7"'ers , but it doesn't have the choil, I'll wait for your reply, Thanx Brian.

paulie 4x I'm not really a steel expert but here's what I found on Wikipedia: "8CR13MoV is often talked about in terms of a high-end budget steel...8CR13MoV is often compared to AUS-8 and 440B,@wiki/List_of_blade_materials#cite_note-44 but it has slightly more Carbon"And, as hawknives correctly pointed out, this knife has a hollow grind, not a saber grind like I thought at first.I'll have to use the knife a while before I can give an honest appraisal of the edge retention, but I don't foresee any problem, based on my experience with other Schrade knives. One thing about the SCHF37 knife is it has a more "bushcrafty" drop point design as opposed to the "combat style" blade of many of the others. I'm not saying one is better than the other, just that they are different.Either way, I think the new Bushcraft line from Schrade is going to be a winner.

I wrote to Taylor Brands about the fact that they are calling this series 'bushcraft knives,' when they are not. A bushcraft knife is a style of knife, as are the bowie, the canadian belt knife, etc. The style was specified by the father of modern bushcraft, Mors Kochanski. Ray Mears' Woodlore knife is the prototypical example. It seems that Schrade is cashing in on this buzzword, but using the word improperly diminishes its meaning.
@SurvivalOnPurpose
@SurvivalOnPurpose 9 жыл бұрын
Kevin McGee As I said in my earlier response, I'm not sure I agree. At least in my opinion, a "bushcraft" knife is one that is suited for the tasks commonly associated with the group of tasks and activities popularly called "bushcraft". While the question of what is the "perfect" knife for any job is sure to generate some pretty passionate responses, I think all but the most task specific blades involve some type of compromise. In my admittedly limited experience with these knives I think they do a great job of filling the roles required of a modern "bushcraft" knife. Are there compromises? Sure, but there are compromises with a 4" blade too. I guess I prefer to judge by results and ignore the semantics. As for Schrade "cashing in" on a buzzword, you could also say they are responding to a demand in the marketplace. More semantics. Either way, it's just good business. And I have to say, I'm really glad to see these designs from Shrade. I think they have a great feature set at an excellent price, no matter what they are called.Thanks for watching and have a Merry Christmas!

I would prefer the Schf37M as well, but the tip snapped on mine after 3-4 times stabbing the blade not very powerful into a tree (have not really put any lateral force on it). I think the problem is the hollow grind which goes at the tip all the way up to the spine and makes the tip quite delicate. I have reground the tip to a shape like on the Kizylar Maximus and hopefully and now it seems to be a strong and durable tip. I have put the Schf36M to the same tests and it hold up very well. Maybe my Schf37M was a lemon and you can’t generalise its failure? Unfortunately I have already ground a new tip on it and stripped the coating - so I guess this count as “modification” and voids any warranty. Additionally, I live in the UK what makes any warranty procedures with US based companies not easier.
