This now ships with a little rectangular metal for the ferro rod. Works very well. The black part of the knife must be Teflon coated, so that can’t be used for sparking the rod.

Hi Bryan! Got mine just today. We finally have them available here in Finland. Feels like a nice companion blade. Seems they now come with a nice beefy 4mm thick striker with the ferro rod. Looks like exactly the same ferro rod we have here available by a Finnish knife brand Marttiini. The rod is bit on the soft side but throws awesome chunks of burning magnesium. Great channel Bryan. You rock! :)

I think they simply need to leave a small area on the spine without the coating on it, sort of what the Bear Grylls knife does to leave the steel bare. Other than that, it seems like a good medium knife, probably decent for bushcraft at the very least once it is sharpened properly. That sheath is definitely an improvement over the rather flimsy nylon sheaths they have had in the past, and I hope they release something like that for older knives like the SCHf9 extreme.
@SurvivalOnPurpose8 жыл бұрын
That might do it.

I just received this knife as a gift from my wife. I love the design and it’s a good feel in my hand. The one main thing I was disappointed with is the fact that the sheath isn’t fully compatible with my Tek Lok holster attachment. There is basically one spot that the Tek Lok will attach. Anywhere else, the grommet holes don’t line up. Hopefully Schrade will reconsider this and possibly change the layout of the holes in the sheath.

Great review. I totally agree with on the sharp edges that protrude from the handles. I have the SCH13, and it has the same problem. If you have any way of contacting Schrade, let them know the edges on the handles have to disappear. The blade should be smooth with the handle. I stopped buying Schrade fixed blades because of the handle issue.

Hi Sir, I enjoyed watching your videos a lot. I recently purchased a set of this SCHF59 and my set does came with a ferro rod scrapper attached to the stretch cord probably that was why they did not put in the sharp 90 degree angle on the spine. But usually if I need the sharp spine, I'll just use a dremel and dremel away the spine for an exposed 90 degree spine. Hahaha...

I like that knife. Such a simple sleek design. Like the ferro rod and belt loop. This might be my next knife purchase! PS: About the knife not producing good sparks: Try a bit further down the knife, closer to the tip. It looks like there is a secondary bevel (i forget the proper knifemaking term) Sometimes with Schrade knives that area seems to work better than closer to the handle. Nice video per usual.

+Survival On Purpose Looks like just the picture on Amazon was different. I got the exact same version as yours, which I prefer for aesthetic reasons. They fixed the issue of the dull spine....by adding a striker to the lanyard that holds the ferro rod, heh. A simple and effective solution and I prefer to use a striker over my blade unless I'm in an emergency situation. Keep up the good work/reviews.
@dofishbuster8 жыл бұрын
I debated commenting as I know you are a fairly smart man and I have not actually held the knife in question. Just going by watching and pausing this video would that rounded part just ahead of the finger guard before the blade actually starts possibly be a place for striking the ferro rod? I mean it kind of looks like it may be made for it. Just a thought as I doubt Schrade would market something with a ferro rod that could not strike it anywhere except the actual blade.
@SurvivalOnPurpose8 жыл бұрын
I really don't think so and, if it is, that puts the cutting edge very close to your hand when using that way.
@dofishbuster8 жыл бұрын
I agree about the blade being close to the hand but it is the only place I can see on the knife where you might could use it on a ferro rod since the spine is not sharp.

any idea if there is a functional reason why they are using this 65MN over 1095? just wondering if it's better edge retention. Saw a recent vid that, for bushcrafting, higher grade steel is needed. I'm thinking they just needed a price point adjustment to compete with the other small inexpensive bushcrafter knives... using 1095 might have pushed it above 50.00...but at $28.00 on Amazon, this is a great option.

The handle scales look similar to the F14 design, I wonder if they will have a version with more rounded handles like the F13. The only problem I had with my F13 was I could never get it as sharp as I wanted, it didn't take an edge very well. I think it may be the grind because my F26 (also 8cr13) takes and keeps an edge beautifully.

Hey Brian! Great video as usual. Keep up the great work! Question for you -- would this be a decent replacement for a Mora? I love my HD Companion, but honestly I'm just not much of a Scandi guy. The overall shape of it reminds me of my SCHF13, which I actually used today. I generally like that blade, but the tang design where the knife steel extends outward above the G10 handle slabs is a killer on your hands for anything more than light use. This new blade looks like it has the same sort of design, which is unfortunate. Hopefully Schrade will take that into consideration in the future.
