I experienced Maestro Blomstedt guest conducting the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (Orchestra Hall) about 4 years ago and it was magic. Brahms Symphony No. 2 (I think it was), and sitting just a few rows back from the podium I was completely mesmerized. Something to always remember. This performance of Schubert is equally fabulous.

Taking the repeats, as Blomstedt does, the performance clocks in at a full hour, justifying Robert Schumann's praise of the symphony's "heavenly length." The orchestral playing here is outstanding throughout; the trombones at the conclusion of the first movement are particularly thrilling. (I believe that this work is usually referred to as Schubert's 9th symphony, not 8th, as listed in the KZbin headline and again in the description. I realize that there is no real 7th symphony, but I hope that listing this one as the 8th was an oversight, and not an awkward attempt at renumbering.)

One of the symphonies has been removed from the list. What used to be No.7 was dropped from the list because the manuscript is a draft score with only its introduction and 110 bars scored by Schubert. Several other people subsequently turned the remaining un-orchestrated manuscript. Schubert didn't write what was called Symphony No.7, so it was removed - decades ago - from the accepted canon. It's that simple. Some people are just getting the news, however - and resisting it.
