Wow, seeing them together like this reinforces both similarities and differences. They ARE so similar I think they should always be shone side-by-side like this. Thank you, Patrick.

you'd think you might have talked just a little about the utility of one over the other, particularly since you said you had been using both in order to compare them.

So the Schwabish is basically a larks head (girth hitch) with extra turns, and the Distel is basically a clove hitch with extra turns.

Great video, very concise, but I'd like to know the difference between the 2 during the decent or MRS. Thanks!

I usually climb on a schwabisch with Hitch climber pulley. I tie it and have one end about a quarter or half inch longer than the other. Thats so when I cross it back across the climbing line both ends are equal when putting carabiner through them and the pully.

Interesting. I'll try both tomorrow to see how they work and if there's actually any improvement over a plain old reliable split tail with a Blake's hitch that's worked fine for me for years.

Think I'll try the distal hitch on this lanyard I just made to lighten my load. I dressed it with my hitch climber. I spent so much $ on it and it's been collecting dust in my climbing laboratory. I believe it'll create options for me. Hoping the distal wont be to much friction. Hoping it'll be my favorite lanyard.

Great video. Short, sweet, succinct. I wish people might give some advice or explain how and in which situations you might use the specific knots. Or at least like in this video, why you’d tie one versus the other, since they’re so similar. I’m kinda new, but not green, and I haven’t heard anyone have those types of discussions. Maybe this isn’t the right forum? Liability?

What length of 8mm split tail rope is needed to tie the schwabish or distal hitch as shown?

for 11.5mm main, use 60cm.

Hi there you have a great KZbin channel I learned a lot from you there is one thing I would like to share with you ... your video showed the Yosemite backup on a bowline you emphasize to go to the left I saw another KZbin video and he emphasized going to the right I tried both ways then shook the not real well and the method going to the left came undone every time but not when I went to the right I thought I would just share this with you and other tree climbers I've been climbing 30 years.. thanks for your great vids.... Old tree trimmer here. I use to use a Blake hitch in a moving line setup. It would be tied using the tail where I clipped in to my belt and we never had micro pulleys on our rope. I understand the hitches you are tying but what is the purpose of the micro pulley? Is it just there to aid in sliding the hitch up? Or is there another purpose?

@EducatedClimber what are the advantages and disadvantages of each knot? Also compared to the VT or VTX? Ich which situation do you prefer which ?
@happyfindingz2 жыл бұрын
The hitches all depend on multiple variables: the climbing line size, design and material, the weight of the climber, the size of your hitch cord, srt vs drt, friction saver vs branch collar. You honestly have to try the hitches out and find which ones work best for you.
@JohnGreen_US6 жыл бұрын
Do you personally have a preference? Very much enjoy your vids.

John, I don't use either of these, but lots of people like them. I use a VT or XT for most hitch applications. Thanks for watching!

I thought you mentioned in one of your videos that you prefer the michoacan? I started using the michoacan after but it twisted my rope like crazy. started trying to dial in the VT now and already I see a lot less twist. Thoughts?

Hello, excuse a question, not Italian and I am not very expert in mountaineering: are these two knots used to get off a rope? Are knots that slow down the descent? Thanks for the clarification.

Question: What dimensions have both ropes you use for the hitches? Thx
@kcsanson42164 жыл бұрын
I don't know if you ever found out but your standard hitch chords are 30" eye to eye . . There are bigger and smaller but that will work for either app. You see here

What does the micro pulley do for you? It seems it would function the same without it, as one does with a prussik loop.
@TreeMuggs_PatrickM4 жыл бұрын
Micro pulley tends the hitch, allowing you to easily pull slack through from underneath with one hand... - Patrick

How do you decide which hitch cord and diameter to use?
@TreeMuggs_PatrickM3 жыл бұрын
General guideline is hitch cord 25% smaller than climbing line, so ropes closer to 1/2" use 10 mil cord, closer to 7/16" use 8 mil cord... - Patrick

I am using a 7mm cord rated for 2550lbf for this reason. I wight 215lbs. Is this cord strong enough?
@benjaminwest22813 жыл бұрын
5400 pound breaking strength or greater is suitable for climbing.

Been having trouble with schwabish getting really tight and almost unworkable lately. Ive tried Distel as well and it gets pretty snug at times too. My rope is a little old but my eye to eye that I tie on is only a couple months old. What do you think could be the cause of that?
@TreeMuggs_PatrickM Жыл бұрын
Materials, diameter, and cord length are all major factors, try a different prusik cord or length. Try a Knut hitch or a Michoacan. Lots of things to play with to get it dialed in... - Patrick
@the_ap_1561 Жыл бұрын
@@TreeMuggs_PatrickM would you recommend shorter or longer lengths?

Not sure if you're trying the Distel hitch correctly Traditionally you're supposed to start the wrap on the bottom I'm not sure if you correct yourself by tying it at the end the way you do I think you might correct the hitch where it's right again the most people that I seen start their bottom wrap then go to the agnel and make 4 wraps going down I can this video over here kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y3vQfaGbqadoZtk

Joseph, the final product is all that matters, and yes, I show it tied correctly, even if I start it differently than you have seen it before. Thank you for keeping a keen lookout for mistakes, I appreciate that! All the best, Patrick
@TreeCamper4 жыл бұрын
Patrick is correct. The final structure is what matters. I tie the knut backwards from what most people show because in my head it makes more sense and it's easier to poke the side I finish with through at the end. You should really challenge yourself by learning knots inside and out and tying them in as many ways as possible. It seems to help me remember the knot.
