My cycling mentor had one like this, plus a tandem Paramount. He was a salesman for Schwinn in the 60's and 70's, after he retired as a Professional Bike racer, until they sold the Schwinn name to some large company. He also owns two Waterford bikes, from the company that Richard Schwinn founded after leaving the company that bought him out.

Hi. I'm facing an issue with Varsity 73 freewheel overhaul. Can you please help me and confirm, how many ballbearings are there in a lower race? I had 49, but I think that someone was trying to do smth with it and assmbled it wrong way. When I assebled the freewheel, it was not running smooth. When I tried 48 balls, it runs perfectly. Cheers.
@that70sschwinn4 жыл бұрын
I can't confirm the exact number of bearings, however, rule of thumb is to leave a gap big enough for at least 2 bearings to minimize friction. Here is some information from Schwinn forum you may find helpful... I've been surfing around this morning & ran across a VERY interesting thread on "Bike Forums". They were talking about the very subject of the necessity of dismantling a freewheel. Here is the link: www.bikeforums.net/bicycle-mechanics/947649-has-anyone-ever-torn-apart-older-schwinn-model-j-5-speed-cassette.html (you may have to cut & paste it into your browser) The general consensus is to not take it apart & merely to oil it. They do bring up one good point, the bearings inside the freewheel see virtually no load. If one thinks about it, this is quite true. They also bring up a point that if you do take one apart, never to use grease on the pawls. I can see how after time, the grease will dry up & thicken, & then not allow the tiny torsion springs to do their job & not allow the pawls to engage like they should. However, they do mention that if you do take one apart, one should use a small amount of grease to act as "glue" to hold in the bearings during assembly. They also mention that oiling will significantly reduce the "click click click" of the pawls.
@VegeReggae4 жыл бұрын
@@that70sschwinn Thank you so much for your help. I had to take my apart, due to the fact, that it was in really poor condition. Someone used grease and put to many ballbearings on the lower race. I think 48 should be just fine. At first, I used grease as well, but after test spinn, I changed it to oil and the sound is beautiful. Thank you again, and wishing you a lot of joy from bringing Schwinn bikes back to life ;)

Wow! thanks for the kind words, I appreciate you watching! Glad you got the Simichrome, you will like it, it is great on the hubs, I usually dab it on with my finger and let it sit for a few seconds, then I use a paper towel to get the initial paste and black grime off the alloy, then I use a clean polishing cloth to get the shine to come out, you will be obsessed with how shiny you can get them, I fold the cloth and hold it on each end and polish back and forth like a you would polish a shoe and rotate the wheel to get the entire hub polished. Shield logo levers are not the original levers. The original levers say "CAMPAGNOLO" down the front. Also, they have the very-difficult-to-find O-shaped hole for the cable pear (not the U-shaped later one), the O-shaped one was used through 1974.

beautiful job. my retired 73 the twin of yours. #j7348. That I bought new is stock except for Regina rims so I could use clinchers and regretfully I gave away the Brooks saddle and put on the Avocet. The stem that you used on the rebuild matches mine. Also I still have the white Silca Pump with the Campy head. It originally came with plastic yellow handlebar tape./ The brake hoods cracked and are now off. To my daughter it's just an old useless thing that hangs in the house. Hopefully she will realize it's value when she inherits it. The last time I rode it to the Specialized dealer, it created quite a stir.If you have any ?'s re original setup please let me know.
@that70sschwinn4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Glad you liked it, I bet yours is a beautiful clean original example. Original owner Paramounts are very special as these bikes were modified during the early days to fit the riders needs and preferences. Mine is a perfect example of someone swapping the original bars and stem to a 1978 R1. I did a lot of research to get the bike back to it's 1973 glory and wondered if Schwinn used the Campy crank with Sugino chain rings and bottom bracket. Does your have the campy chain rings? I also wondered about the bar tape and could only find the black cloth examples, The flexon kool lemon tape would seem to be a Schwinn standard option that was done at the dealer based on buyer preference. I understand these were very special bikes that could be ordered with campy brakes sets or the standard Weinnann center pull brakes. Your daughter will be very luck to inherent your P-13, these sell for $2000 and up nowadays, and will continue to become more valuable and desirable going forward. Hope one day she sees the bike as the iconic classic vintage bike it truly is 😏👍🚲🏡

@@that70sschwinn mine has a campy crank and campy 52 42 chain rings. The crank arms are campy with a 5/8 in. shield etched just below the crank arm, it appears to be two feathers with campagnolo in a semi circle below. The longest ride I went on it was 160 miles to Sacramento from the SFO Bay Area. The 52 42 combo was not good for climbing to lake Berryessa. .Total miles on the bike I would guess are less than 3,000. It has never been down. As I wanted a Paramount since I was 12 and finally scored it at 28. I did not use it much except for trips. Around town I always used a bike I didn't fear being stolen. I have it hanging from the ceiling in my house just had a close look at it to check out the crank...omg! the dust is caked on!! BTW the frame is 23"

@that70sschwinn4 жыл бұрын
@@paly1946 Nice! Thanks for the details, sounds like the 52/42 combo was not designed for the California terrain uphill challenges, I'm guessing the 42" made you pedal at a higher rate while a 49" would have given you more torque with fewer revolutions. That's what mine had, sounds like one of the previous owners swapped the chain ring size and used the Sugino brand to save money. I grew up in Kansas and now live in Florida, both flat as a pancake so the 42" works for me for quick acceleration or a random uphill. These old Schwinns clean up well, hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine. Thanks again for sharing the component details 👍🚲
