I love films with this much depth! Showing the manipulative power the psychopathic mindset has over normal brain function, making it void of a conscience, emotions, empathy, boundary awareness of others and personal responsibility. The entire video was about physical incarceration and virtual role playing (simulations) to put the inmate in various tempting situations. The only memory that was purged was the conversation with the parole officer. (3:25 - 50). The two most powerful vices that a psychopath has are manipulation and not accepting responsibility for the consequences of their actions; and this film did both superbly. The lack of responsibility is illustrated by the male inmate projecting all those antisocial behaviors onto his female parole officer. By doing that he didnt have to take responsibility because in his mind he wasnt perpetrating the crimes, she was. The other Hallmark quality is manipulation which was shown in his dreams, when he projected his actions onto his parole officer, using seduction in an attempt to gain release. Nick Turner, I applaud you for your ability to show the complex workings of a damaged psychopathic mind; in only 17 minutes! I have watched hour long documentaries on the subject that dont even scratch the surface in comparison to your work. If the power brokers in Hollywood werent themselves, variations of Cyrus, this short would be nominated for an Oscar. And Dust...this one is over the top fantastic, keep them coming.

Trope Alert! Call it Meta-Meta or Role-Reversal, this is an instance of a trope. Yet in 17 minutes and seventeen seconds, this shows why tropes exist, and why writers, producers, actors and directors continue to do their best with them and against them. This. So psychological. The futurist sci-fi trappings aren't the focus, but merely serve to efficiently strip away distractions (despite the excellent CGI eye-candy), leaving us in a minimal, largely virtual, landscape. Where people, personalities and character matter. Are all that matters. So well done. Watching the parole officer's cracks appear, watching them go where they unsurprisingly go. Then straight to the surprise flip and twist. Love it, love it, love it!

@edbailey75335 жыл бұрын
Wow! The premise of this film is certainly interesting, but on the whole, not entirely unique. Sci fi has often explored what incarceration might look like in the future, after all. But it's the actors that really deliver the goods here: The scenes where Alice spars with Cyrus crackle with a level of menace that really caught me off guard, and watching Cyrus' resolve slowly crumble into obsession made clear the battle that was going on between the two. The twist at the end has also been done many times before, but the details shown here linger in the mind--what was the actual crime committed, and how does that factor into the many parole violations we learn about at the end? That this film was well-shot, with a visually-engaging style is just icing on the cake. It's all good, and well worth watching!

@edbailey75335 жыл бұрын
@@jsalsman That's a really good question! With this seemingly minor plot point, we get a peek "behind the curtain" and see how a story is constructed. Alice *has* to ask, "will I be the same person" and Cyrus *has* to respond, "No", because Alice *has* to say, "put me back in." Otherwise, if Alice says, "sure, wipe my mind" the story ends, or if there's no mind wipe procedure at all, Alice has no agency, and she becomes a boring automaton in the story instead of the cold, calculating character she needs to be in order to get inside Cyrus' head, drive the story forward, and keep the audience interested. All stories, no matter the form, are based on such constructs. The thing that separates good stories from bad ones is often the skill employed in making the underlying constructs either invisible, or so entirely inevitable that the audience never questions them, as you did. If you ever notice that a character in a story doesn't seem to behave logically, that can often be an indicator that the character *has* to take the illogical action in service of the story, but a poor job was done of creating a context in which that action is entirely logical...

What could have been better is some indication of why the person might ever be expected to have changed if they start over after the memory wipe at count 0 every time. The only thing I can think of is that perhaps there's an educational component to the simulation that can permanently help the person to improve-something like that should have been indicated in the film.

According to the canon in the film though, most criminals learn in a few days. This makes sense as most crime is not necessarily by factor 1 or even factor 2 socio/psychopaths, but rather driven by other combinations of factors like poverty, poor parenting, trauma, etc. An salient example is 1 study done (I wish I could recall author) on mafia criminals who were incarcerated and even most (possibly all) of them did not test high enough on factor 1 or factor 2 nor the Hare psychopath checklist or even meet the conditions for a clinical diagnosis of Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD) the closest actual mental diagnosis to the concept of sociopathy/psychopathy (and only an adult diagnosis). Interestingly, Quite a few of the mob subjects met the diagnostic conditions for Borderline Personality Disorder, though. And these are guys who have robbed and often killed in cold blood. But they werent more likely to be psychopaths. It was rather a combination of other emotional instability/mental illness (Borderline,Bipolar, etc) and being raised in a culture where crime was the norm and to be a career criminal was an expectation (at least of men) that fit together with a worldview of family, religion, and other values such as loyalty, professionalism, honor, etc. that made it possible for them to do sociopathic things when they truly did have empathy, but its why there culture had to be so insulated and family-based as it required constant mutual reinforcement between a them to work that way. Anyway that just an example of how most criminals are not sociopaths and in this film , though they lost memory of the parole interview, they would retain the memory of ethics course they went through in their box before the simulation, and be able to learn without knowing its not real life.

The story was: A man who flew into a rage because his girl friend had a man over, kills the man. The man is going through a simulation which he continues to fail. He went through almost a thousand cycles where he got up and did the same thing every day, resulting in him killing his girlfriend's friend. In the simulation he is in his late 20s early 30s. When they come out of his consciousness, they see he is at least 60, long beard, looking rough. That's just one of the many.

Worse than memory purges that does not allow the subjects to rehabilitate, they "entrap" the parolee into continuing the same behaviour. I see a layer that perhaps has not been proffered: Cyrus intentionally fails probation so that he can return to the SIM to be with the tester. This would account for the scene where he is on the beach with his "wife". He is clearly lonely and seeks solace in SIMS. Not sure the role Luna's child plays in the SIM. Will give it a third watch. If the filmmaker has done his or her work, I'll figure it out. The thing to remember in shorts is that everything, every scene means something, and if it doesn't, the filmmaker has not done his or her job. That said, I friggin loved this!

@@mishie618 exactly. As you say, all it takes is a simple mistake and your life could well be ruined!!! I pray that here in the UK we dont follow the American prison model, but now we have left the EU (European Union) our government is free to treat its population however it wants. Before, we always had European laws ensuring that our government was being watched by a higher power. Sadly that has gone now, so now we'll have to see what happens. More than likely the UK will do just the same, treat prisons as money making factories.

If Simon and Alice were actually an imprisoned futuristic "Bonnie and Clyde" that were codependent to a level the A.I. simply could not fathom it would have really freaked me out. A side by side shot of them in suspended animation and crime photos would have sold it rather well.

Thank god for Closed Captions, or this entire video would have been completely pointless.
