Love the film. The shrinking credits thing is a bit off putting because I think a lot of us get curious about the people behind the brilliant films. This filmmakers, (who put in a looot of hard work) get cheated out of recognition by the hyper speed credits because the viewers don't even know where to start looking for more of their stuff. Most people making shorts need the recognition to help push their brand so please fix this. It's counterproductive to what I think is one of the pillars of the channel that is, supporting filmmakers aka dreamers.

For a simple 14 minute film to make me feel strong emotions by the end, this is damn good. I'm actually angry and that she lost her mother and father to some experiment. It wasn't even real.
@Error-ke1tf

My assumption is WW3 broke out while they were conducting the experiment and communications went dark as a result. They tell their daughter they're on a spaceship in order to hide the terrible truth from her. But the mother started going stir crazy from the years spent in isolation without any knowledge of the state of things outside and talked to her husband about the possibility of leaving. He outright refused, believing they were safe underwater and going outside is too great a risk. So she decides to take matters into her own hands and record a message for her daughter to explain why she'll be gone for a while to investigate. The husband finds her mid-recording and attempts to stop her, but she manages to escape his grip and close the airlock behind her. We don't know what happens beyond this point but it is implied that she either vanished or later returned with severe radiation burns and perished, which he kept secret from the daughter.

Yes, Eade’s parents are part of a simulation experiment to determine the effects of long-term space travel. Being underwater helps test the isolation and also is one of the best ways to test extravehicular activity, AKA spacewalks for repairs etc. World War Three happens and they lose contact with the surface. They have no means of knowing the conditions on the surface, and as water is a great shield from radiation, they decide to stay submerged for as long as possible. Unfortunately, after Eade is born, her mother, Jessica, becomes increasingly claustrophobic - possibly suffering from postpartum anxiety - and escapes to the surface, never to return. Mark, Eade’s dad, is worried that if Eade discovers that her mother might be on the surface she will try and join her, so he creates the lie that the mission is real. As the spaceship’s systems start to decay, he pretends that they are returning to earth, after a war, and that they will crash land in the sea. Thus, his duplicity will be complete. Unfortunately, before they can ‘land’ he gets injured. Because he has locked Eade out of so many systems, to prevent her from knowing the truth, he has inadvertently prevented her from being able to authorize major surgery. Eade has seen that there is a spare ID in the safe. This is her Mum’s ID, which her Mark took from Jessica to try and prevent her from escaping. However, her Mum being the systems engineer for the mission, managed to circumvent the security and escape. There are two clues that all is not what it seems. The first one is the water Mark finds during the repairs. The second, at the 6:16 point, is very subtle and occurs when Eade is reviewing the security footage. There is a power surge where the computers, which show the fake stars in the spaceship’s windows, reboot and you see the computer’s reboot sequence instead of stars. This catches Eade’s attention but before she can investigate further, she is distracted by the safe being cracked by the Cleanbot. If anyone is interested, the script is here. www.showmeshorts.co.nz/documents/filmmakerResources/Cradle.pdf

@@hughcalveley197 thanks for explaining..sci-fi is my favorite storytelling genre, good story arc.. but wish i could have gleaned more clearly what was going on, mystery and all, by the viewing of the film itself..a lot to squeeze into 15 minutes, i understand..but it can be very helpful for an audience to have hints that are not so "subtle." in any case, much respect for any filmmaker/team/crew who gets from the beginning to the end with making a movie.👍👍

Interesting movie, but I couldn't hear half of what was said. Also, who creates a simulation that they actually let people die in? The whole point of a simulation like that would be to identify and fix failure modes so that people *don't* die. "The automated med bay won't perform life-saving surgery unless you have the right password" is also bad design. What if the person with the password is the one who needs the surgery, and they're unconscious? The acting and sets were really good though.

I had to watch a second time, mostly to make out some of the dialogue from the mom and dad, which were critical plot points. The second viewing definitely cleared things up a bit. Sounds like the mom left and either never returned, or as someone commented returned and died from radiation poisoning. It makes sense that the dad would lie to his daughter and tell her that mom is on earth to avoid telling her the awful truth- I guess she was young enough that she didn't remember growing up with her mother, or he could gaslight her into thinking it was just her imagination, or maybe that the memories are from when they all lived together on earth. Actually that's a terrible idea, but people make terrible decisions and lie to their children all the time, so I find it very believable that a father would take the 'easy way' out and avoid breaking the news to his daughter.
@falconeio
@falconeio 3 жыл бұрын
I think people missed a few details that put things into more perspective. First off, is that they were a couple without a child it seems when they went down and they were down in a submerged, not a buried capsule. When she is finally leaving, the capsule looks to be fully buried and that takes a very very long time to happen. She doesn't know she's underwater, she thinks she's in space, so she wasn't old enough to know any better if she was alive when it started. Her mother must've gone out a long time ago as well with what she was saying. Add in what the father says at the end and it seems a Nuclear war happened on the surface and he stayed below with his daughter to keep her safe from the scorched earth above and had been for at least as long as the daughter has been alive.

The twist at the end was totally short circuited. There's no ah-ha moment at the end if the audience is told before. i gather from the prologue that the girl believes she's on a space ship. The only audio i understood was her asking the computer "what's it like down there?". So she has to leave the ship... then you just show us she's underwater as an experiment. I would have enjoyed this if i understood the dialogue and was surprised at the end.

I would have liked to know a few things about this one, but alas, I cant, because DUST didnt think it was worth the effort to let us know who made the film. Can we all pls start spamming this message on each movie they upload from now on untill they will do the right thing, and not think about their own money pockets, and give the creators the CREDIT THEY DESERVE! Im torn between hitting like and dislike because of this reason, so I will do neither. Which is a real shame. Shame on u DUST.

Beautiful set production, very nicely done . . . but the audio seemed way off, difficult to hear some of the dialogue while the background drumming was completely overriding much of the content, strangely out of sync. Would like to have had much better balance with the audio engineering, as it was such a visually compelling example of filmcraft, but it was difficult to follow come parts of the story. The daughter character was well acted, but sadly, it was basically impossible to read the credits at the end of the film.

What if we once lived in a world in which women didn't wear make up and constantly preen and groom themselves? Can you imagine? Something about that calls to me deeply. Not in a sexual way; just in a longing for a world in which that is the norm. A world free of... fakeness... and bullshit, and shallow vanity. And woman is sort of the symbol of it all. Woman is the center of the species. What have we done to her? Painting her and smoothing her and decorating her non-stop? How is this adding value? Look how beautiful she is without it, once we get used to the natural again! Breathtaking. I know this isn't the point of the film, but imagine the lead actress with makeup on and shining smooth hair, conditioned with avocado and passion fruit extracts and whatevertheholyfuck, and wearing... special garments, designed to stand out. How would that add any value or beauty? What are we doing, as a culture? Consumerism, I guess. But remember this: the external state of our women is a reflection of the internal state of ourselves. If you're in love with the internal archetypal of the 'natural girl with the messy hair,' you're one of the last of a dying breed, I suppose. You were probably born long ago. Like me. Maybe you lived in the country, and remember a time before life was only consumerism. And maybe you even remember how beautiful our girls were, in pants and t-shirts, maybe even dresses, and their glowing faces not painted over. Radiating the natural beauty of a thousand suns shining through autumn.

It seems that what Dad has to say around the 10:45 point is CRITICAL for the story - but I can't hear it well enough to understand it. Good headphones, extra-zoomy soundcard, Engritch is my primary language - the thing has potential to be a good story. I guess. He apparently snorked Mommy for... some reason?

Ha, Dammit, I came down to the comments after less than 2 minutes to ask if anyone could understand something that I couldn't understand, but really wanted to know, because I figured it was important to the story and the first dozen comments I come across all ask for Captions because they also couldn't understand things. So that's great. I've noticed that captions aren't available when they are need the most. It's like when the dialogue is especially sketchy that's when there are no Captions. I know this isn't the case, but it's almost like the program that creates captions actually "listens" to the dialogue in a program and creates the words from this. Which is why when the dialogue is particularly sketchy there are no Captions because the program doesn't understand what's being said. Even though I know that's ridiculous, it always turns out this way. Anyways, what I wanted to know perhaps someone else might be able to tell me just out of context. She asks how her father is doing and the AI says that he's not doing too well because of the hemorrhage, and then asks if she has found a replacement (something) yet, and she says no. Can anyone tell me what that (something) is? It sounds like the AI is saying ID, but I don't understand how an ID would help with a hemorrhage. My only guess (if it really is saying ID) is that because the AI refers to the girl by her ID, maybe the AI means she needs the girl to find like a donar body of someone in order to get parts from? That's the best I've got. Anyone else got a different translation/theory for this? Any help would be appreciated! I love the Dust channel! These mini episodes may be frustrating AF most of the time (mostly because they end and I want them to keep going) but I can't help but be addicted to them! 😁😍😁 Edit:. Well seeing as how it appears that he and his daughter are the only 2 people aboard a ship to Mars, I guess that throws my only theory out the window. How someone else has a better idea. I swear the Australian accent didn't help at All! When the Dad is talking right before the engines go offline, there was perfect silence, yet I couldn't understand fuck all that he was saying. The first few words he spoke I even thought he was speaking Japanese, but it was just that his accent was so damn thick I couldn't understand it. Edit #2: Okay I'm with everyone else. You really really need to make captions for this. I couldn't understand Shit! All I could get out of what the Dad said was there was radiation and he didn't know what else to do. Everything else was a garbled thick accented mess. Okay well now I know that the capsule was just a simulated underground mission what I don't get is why the news didn't acknowledge the daughter as being a part of the mission as well, and if it was just an underwater capsule how could it have a meltdown, and why would it not have safeguards against why ever the fuck it filled up with water?!?

Major plot Point failure if this is a simulation then you would think they would have communication with a group acting as Mission support ,if this is a simulated mission then it needs to be as close as possible to the real thing otherwise a good job. and please let us see the credits shrinking them down and running them at high speed does no justice to the creators of the film, or to the viewers

if they are far from earth - which was the point of the simulation - the time lag would mean that communication would be impossible - whole point of traveling from Earth is that you are really alone

Actually, I don't think they are far from earth. More like far below earth. Awaiting a time a time they can come back to the surface. I think the mother could not take the isolation any more, she wanted to return to the life she had. The father wanted to remain. Their daughter unknowing of the situation...
