2nd place winner at the 2013 Sci-Fi London 48 Hour Film Challenge. Written, shot, edited and scored in less than 48 hours.The filmmakers were given a random title ("FALLING APART"), a random line of dialogue ("Fame is fleeting, baby, but legends live forever") and a random prop/action (A mug of steaming liquid - a character sniffs the hot liquid and pours it away), and then had 48 hours to write a script with those elements, shoot it, edit it, grade it, score it, sound design it, export it and deliver it in person at the London BFI. A stunning result that DUST is honored to present here.

Explanation: In Britain it is rarely sunny. When it is Gingers have to retreat to the nearest bunker or put on a hazmat suit. Failure to take proper precautions sends them mad.

Proving once again that you don't need a big budget when the story is well written and well acted. Very good job! Loved it.

I loved the simplicity of the story line, we all kinda saw it coming but were like “naw, they wouldn’t”. Well, they would.

Nah that was seriously insane. The twist is movie like. This goes to show. 5 min. Vs the hour long movies we get. We 100% do not need Hollywood anymore. We need this. Imagine if they have the budget Hollywood does. And continues this as a movie. I would watch the whole thing twice

It's the difference between novel and short story. They work differently. For example, the short story, as this short, doesn't need to explain where the infection came from, you just need to be aware there's an infection and how it works for the story to work. In a movie, as in a novel, you'll need a baseline before, or some sort of flashback to explain things out.
@blujay9191

@@gedece .. I generally agree with you. That's usually the case but not always. Sometimes they leave things unexplained and it's still an effective narrative. Children of Men didn't really spell out a cause for the worldwide infertility pandemic yet was still very compelling. I'm sure there's other examples but none come right to mind at the moment.

@@blujay9191Children of Men was meant to be ambiguous as far as the science was concerned. It was a movie about human interactions in the now and not about what got them to that point. Also, the movie had a book that came out a decade and a half before the movie and had been thoroughly discussed, even though the movie made some major changes, it stayed true to the underlying theme. Fans of the book knew what to expect, while the general public went in and saw a well-crafted and well-acted story being played out even though the focus of the film is different from the book's.

@@mrblaque .. Thanks for making the effort to reply. I read the book too and enjoyed it. Maybe I wasn't clear but I liked the fact that the movie makers didn't feel compelled to make up a back story explanation. I'm thinking that if the movie was made now the temptation to explain the cause of the problem by preaching or otherwise raising awareness about something or another would be almost irresistible.

The man is a scientist; his girlfriend presumably a researcher. He writes a peer reviewed article and she notes he is famous. He said reviews come and go; legends are forever. A pandemic hit the world. It's their job to find a cure. While searching/collecting for specimens earlier that night, he cut his suit and arm. He became infected. He knew that if she discovered he was infected, he'd have to be isolated from her and he might very well die. Paranoia of such starting to seep in. He cut her to save her from his infection and being separated from her. Later that night, he resumed searching for specimens, wearing the same hazmat suit he never took off. Presumably to get specimens for a cure. He imagined his girlfriend not wearing a hazmat suit, collecting a specimen he failed to get. He imagined her examining the nonexistent specimen, telling him it is infected. The pandemic has run its course; everything has perished with him soon to follow. In the early hours of the next morning, he awakes from a nonexistent disturbance as the bunker's power fails. He sees himself in his hazmat suit staring back at him; he's in the abyss of his mind. He comes back to the bunker, realizing the fragments of his memory, discerning truth from hallucinations. Knowing what he'd done and what awaits his fate, I'm surprised he dropped the blade in shock instead of finishing himself.
