In the near future, an old man works alone in his garage - click-click clicking the hours away on an old laptop computer. His name is Hugo. His frail body and wispy hair belie the concentration in his eyes… He’s making something… Some great project…
It is a cold and gloomy future - or perhaps that is just his perception.
Mail arrives via automated drone; its animated smiles and digitised platitudes can’t burn away the carbon grey clouds or disguise the filthy towering skyscrapers.
The drone is Hugo’s only visitor. It brings a letter for his dead wife.
He returns to his work, as he always does.
Today is special though. Today, Hugo will test his creation.
Today, the not-too-distant future will become the not-too-distant past.

Wow, if this isn’t written about my mom and dad I don’t know what could be closer to it. Sad, yes. Moving, yes. Inspiring, yes. I miss my mom, but my dad is the person that misses her the most. I wish there were tech like this in reality. Wouldn’t that be great to be able to revisit our loved ones that have passed before us? Thanks, Dust. Always enjoy your shorts.

No, it would not be good. I am sure many of us would be keep going back to the past and forget about the present. We would be like this old man. If they had their last dance together as still young, she died young and he spent 50 years by reviving the only memory. And why are guests in black? Funeral maybe? They were smilling and crying at the same time? Last goodbye? It is heart-breaking when our loved ones pass away and probably we have this tinny holes in our hearts to our death, and yet there are other things, that make us smile, enjoy, explore, we meet other people, friends, make new connections and that make our lives worthy. ❤

wow - the amount of editing that went into this is truly impressive! Nicely done!

It's simple but quite nicely done. One of the things I like is how the hologram is so limited in how well it works. Often in sci-fi, holograms are portrayed as being a near-future technology very casually added to the setting. They even have one in the early parts of Vanilla Sky! But in reality, holograms like this are as far out of reach as time travel, FTL, artificial gravity... We have no idea where to even begin to create something like this (not counting things certain types that only work in very limited circumstances like "pepper's ghost" or a solid crystalline object that appears to contain a 3D object inside it). At least with this one they are somewhat acknowledging that it's not something we're going to see look good in our lifetimes.

Wow, it really got me, this little short movie. One of the shorts which do not require really a word to explain everything but still tell stories so deep.
