Bengal Famine and Bangladesh Separation (East Pakistan-1971) are two suppressed issues in Geopolitics. Bollywood does neither have the balls to produce films on these issues nor they have close to reality. I must say somebody from Hollywood should depict this at least in cinematic reality. I am enthusiastically waiting for someone will make a movie showing the truth of these two tragic histories...Thank You

Exactly Bollywood should tell the truth about how Hindus were the government of Bengal ruling over Muslims and didn't feed the Muslims and let them starve The Bengal Famine of 1942 was a severe food shortage crisis that occurred in India's Bengal during World War II. The famine was caused by a combination of factors, including drought, the diversion of food to the war effort, and the inability of the Indian government to provide adequate relief. Additionally, the Japanese Empire's occupation of Burma/Myanmar reduced the food supply in Bengal. Marwari traders hoarded grain, exacerbating the food shortage. Canadian Prime Minister McKenzie King offered to send grain to Bengal, but British Prime Minister Winston Churchill ordered that grain be shipped from Australia instead. The ultimate responsibility for the crisis was attributed to the India Bengal government assembly, which failed to provide adequate relief and support to the people of Bengal. The Bengal Legislative Assembly had the power to make laws on agriculture, trade, and commerce, which could have helped to address the food shortage. The Government of India Act 1935 decentralized the administration of food and agriculture to the provincial governments, including Bengal. Natural disasters such as crop disease and cyclones had severely affected Bengal's food production. The Indian Bengal government was mostly made up of Indians, mostly Hindus ruling over Muslims during the famine between 1940 and 1945. The Hindu-majority party in power in Bengal, the Krishak Praja Party, had discriminatory policies towards Muslims, who made up a significant portion of Bengal's population. This worsened the famine's impact on the Muslim population. The Bengal Legislative Assembly was dissolved on 11th November 1942 by the British colonial authorities in response to the Quit India Movement. Although the assembly was dissolved, Indians continued to play a role in governing Bengal. Indian political leaders organized protests, strikes, and other forms of civil disobedience to pressure the British colonial authorities to address the pressing issues facing Bengal, such as the food shortage and the need for greater political autonomy. The Bengal Famine was one of the deadliest famines in human history, with an estimated death toll of between 1.5 and 3 million people. The famine affected mostly the rural areas of Bengal, where the poorest and most vulnerable people lived. The British colonial government was criticized for not doing enough to address the crisis and for exacerbating the situation by continuing to export food from India to other parts of the British Empire. Despite the difficult circumstances, many Indian leaders and organizations played an active role in providing relief to the victims of the famine. Some of the notable leaders who played a role in the famine relief efforts include Sarat Chandra Bose, Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy, Khwaja Nazimuddin, Fazlul Haq, and A. K. Fazlul Huq. These leaders organized relief camps, distributed food, and raised awareness about the severity of the crisis. In conclusion, the Bengal Famine of 1942 was a tragic event in Indian history that resulted in the loss of millions of lives. While there were multiple factors that contributed to the crisis, the failure of the India Bengal government to take adequate measures to address the food shortage was a major factor. Despite this, Indian leaders and organizations worked tirelessly to provide relief to the victims of the famine and played an important role in mitigating the severity of the crisis.

When we were younger our grand parents used to tell about stories of "Anikal" during which mothers used to boil stones and tell her children that the food is being prepared but when the children found out that it was stones only, they died. It was the only hope of the food that kept them alive. Just imagine the level of hunger those children were going through. Now I know "anikal" they used to talk about is this famine. In my place people eat himalayan nettle ( leaves which has little thorns in it) soup. And different types of roots that are found in forest. @@cghygyy British empire is responsible for everything horrible happening in India . They taught Indians corruption , greed and divided the community and the country to strengthen their future .India was a land of extreme wealth and resources. Who took all those? Brits and never acknowledge colonies for extravagant buildings of london and south England. Colonizers all over the world thought that uncultivated land should be taken over so that that could be used for more commercial purposes. The production of commercial crops like jute, sugar, wheat and cotton increased during this period. This happened because of increasing demand from a growing population in Europe. Food-grain was required to feed the growing population and raw materials were needed for the growing industries. The cultivated area increased by 6.7 million hectares between 1880 and 1920 in India. Shipping Industry in England: The oak forests were disappearing in England by the early twentieth century. This created scarcity for the ship building industry in Britain. Ships were quite important for military power of the British. They found good source of wood for shipbuilding in the Indian forests. This resulted in large scale deforestation in the Indian forests. Railways: The spread of railways from the 1850s created new demand for timber. Timber was required for making sleepers for the railway line. Each mile of railway track needed 1,760 to 2,000 sleepers. About 25,500 km of track had been laid by 1890. You can calculate the number of sleepers needed to 25,500 km of railway line and number of trees which were chopped for this. Plantations The British also introduced large plantations for growing tea, coffee and rubber. European planters were given vast areas of land at cheap rates so that they could develop plantations. The area was cleared of forests to make way for tea or coffee plantations. To properly control and manage the forest resources in India, the British appointed a German expert, Dietrich Brandis, as the first Inspector General of Forests in India. Brandis introduced a new system and began to train people in conservation of forest resources. The Indian Forest Service was set up in 1864 and the Indian Forest Act was introduced in 1865. Grazing, felling of trees and any use of forest produce was made illegal and punishable offence. In the name of scientific forestry, they replaced natural vegetation with single type of trees like sal or eucalyptus. The modern conservationists tell this system as monoculture and argue that it is not good for the environment. The Indian Forest Act was amended twice, once in 1878 and then in 1927. The 1878 Act divided forests into three categories: reserved, protected and village forests. Now, people could not take anything from reserved forests. However, they could take forest produce from protected and village forests. Earlier, people used to take food, medicines, firewood and many other raw materials from forests. The new laws made their life miserable. They could no longer take their herds for grazing nor collect firewood. They were now forced to steal wood from the forests. But there always was the risk of being caught and harassed by the forest guards. Forest Rules and Cultivation Shifting cultivation has been prevalent among many tribal communities in India. This is a type of subsistence farming in which a small patch of land is cleared by slashing and burning the vegetation. Ash is then mixed with the soil and seeds are sown after the first rain of the monsoon. The patch of land is utilised for a couple of years and is then left fallow for 10 to 12 years. The colonial officials regarded this practice as harmful for the forests. They were afraid that an accidental fire could destroy valuable timber. Moreover, the shifting cultivators were difficult to control in revenue collection. The government hence banned shifting cultivation. This affected many families. Many people were forced to work in low paying jobs and some others were forced to migrate to cities in search of jobs. However, some people tried to resist the new laws through small and large rebellions.

@@cghygyy From the East India Company to the Raj, India was a British colony until the mid-20th century. And despite nostalgic imperialists extolling the virtues of the empire's rule, it left behind millions of victims. The 1919 Amritsar massacre, the grim anniversary of which India marked on Saturday, is one of the best-known examples of the atrocities committed by the British during their two-century colonial rule of India. But, numerically, its total of 1,600 victims looks like a small blot among the millions of deaths India suffered during the empire's prolonged misrule and exploitation. From the 18th to the 20th century, various parts of India endured over a dozen devastating famines, which killed tens of millions of people, most of the events exacerbated, if not outright caused, by the colonial administration. The East India Company (EIC), merchants with their own army who ruled India on behalf of the British crown, were ruthlessly effective in generating exports and profits from the colonized land - ruthlessness being a key part of the efficiency. Exports of Indian produce - rice, tea, wheat, and even, illegally, opium - were a vital boost for the British economy, helping keep food prices low at home and generating income from sales to other nations, like China.The EIC did not hesitate to decrease the areas for food crops and even destroy food plants to make room for other crops needed for export, including opium poppies. Many scholars agree that in a lot of the cases, famine would have come anyway, considering the poor rainfall and underdeveloped transportation, among other things - but it was made that much worse by the Brits, who exploited agriculture while failing to offset its troubles with proper investment. The British response to famine was often inaction, at least until their troops were affected, like in Orissa in 1865, where a third of the regional population died before aid was finally sent in. As the Great Famine of 1876-78 struck Madras and Bombay, the British administration thought the free market would sort it out and government interference would only hurt in the long run. It took 5.5 million deaths for the Brits to begin relief work. At the turn of the century, the British Viceroy cut rations (saying famine relief was "philanthropy" and "complacency"), which resulted in another million deaths.Partitioning of India The same ruling that brought India independence also resulted in one of, if not the worst instances of mass migration in history, a division of enormous territories along religious lines and a scar on both the land and the collective consciousness of two peoples - as well as over a million deaths and thousands of stories of atrocities and hardship which could have been avoided with better planning on the part of the retreating Brits.The British government decided to cede power to Indian leadership in 1946, but the initial plan was to keep the country whole - merely designating grouped provinces as majority Muslim and majority Hindu, to accommodate the deepening split between the country's two major religious groups, represented by the two largest political parties - the Muslim League and the Indian National Congress. That plan came crashing down when in August communal tensions boiled over into what is now known as the Great Calcutta Killings. The Muslim League staged a Direct Action Day, ostensibly a peaceful protest to demand a separate homeland for Muslims, which spiraled into a massacre of an estimated 4,000 people over the span of days. The British plan was then altered and accelerated - India would be split, Pakistan would be created, and independence would come several months earlier. The sometimes-voiced trope that the fate of the partition was decided over a single lunch is a bit of an embellishment - but several weeks of planning hardly proved a better time frame.The partition plan, with the border slashing through the mixed Hindu-Muslim regions of Punjab and Bengal, was presented in June 1947 by the last British viceroy, Louis Mountbatten, who did not see the need to organize an orderly transfer of populations, believing local authorities would sort it out as needed. What resulted was the uprooting of 15 million people and the deaths of over a million. Let loose by the officially announced religious divide, yesterday's neighbors began killing each other and taking away each other's homes and livelihoods, settling old feuds with blood and perpetrating localized ethnic cleansing. Afraid of becoming minorities in what used to be their own land, people fled in both directions across the border, as well as out of the regions altogether. Punjab and Bengal, as well as Sindh, Uttar Pradesh, and Kashmir (a disputed flashpoint to this day) were among the worst affected areas.

The real face of British: During Bengal famine 1943, Churchill deliberately ordered the diversion of food from starving Indian civilians to well-supplied British soldiers and even to top up European stockpiles. Churchill even blamed Indians that they "breed like rabbits" The character of Indians: India provided Cuba with 10,000 tonnes of wheat and 10,000 tonnes of rice in 1992 when Cuba was undergoing hardship. Fidel Castro termed the donation as the "Bread of India", because it was sufficient to provide one loaf of bread to each Cuban citizen.

Actually, it was quite easy solve. What lacked was willpower. As the definition "famine" already suggests, it is man-made, and not entirely natural. Even worse than that, it would have been easy to avoid millions of deaths. Maybe not every death, but certainly many. *With a pot of ink and a table.* Certainly, even with a war going on (like during the 1943 famine), the most powerful empire in the world should have been able to do that. Line up the people, sell them a few kilos of rice/food at a government set price, finger in the pot, on your way... Note also, when food shortages *did* seem imminent or predictable for themselves, like during WW1 and WW2, food rationing *was* introduced. Strange, that it wasn't left to "market forces" to sort that out... So much for the "well, we didn't know it was going to be so bad"-excuses... But, of course Operation Legacy meant "winners" can sink evidence of crimes "to the bottom of the deepest oceans", or burn it, with instructions to ensure that ashes are ground to dust, and are not readable. I wonder what "evidence" was so embarrassing, that it had to be burnt to cinders? The construction of roads and schools maybe? Luckily for the British and *their* "popular or narrative history", most people are biased. Most people consider it "not so bad" letting people die of starvation, as opposed to actively murdering them. I assume, to the victim the effect is the same (perspective). You die. A bias known as "omission bias", and it's easy to fool people.

@herrhelmerich9 ай бұрын
And actually, the same study shows that almost all of the previous famines in India (before the 1943 bengal famine), were caused by droughts. It also found that the chances of famine caused by drought, steadily decreased towards the end of the 19th and early 20th centuries. This was in part due to the enormous capital invested by the British into Irrigation projects (the large irrigation network in the world was created by the British government in the gangetic valley), Famine Codes, Railways, scientific methods of stockpiling, etc, all to eradicate famines in india-- which they essentially did. There was not a single famine in India from 1900 to 1943, and no large-scale famine since the 1890s. This comprises 50 years of famine-free British india, making up more than half of the entire duration (90 years) of the British Raj. Another contribution toward preventing famines came from the introduction and use of fertilisers.

There are problems with this claim. For one, the Allies didn't yet have the numbers of ships available to divert to famine relief. They were still losing large numbers of ships to the U-Boat offensive and to the Japanese. Churchill asked FDR for ships but FDR had none to give at that point. Second, famines were not an unknown event in Bengal. Yes, Churchill's war cabinet (not just Churchill himself) were slow to react to the crisis but there was a lot on their "to do list" in 1943. Over 2.4 million people a year die of starvation in india today. More people died of starvation since 1947 than did under the British or Mughal rule put together. The Bengal famine was caused by the Japanese and the death toll was mainly down to food hoarding by the Muslim League. There was no invasion of any country in the colonial locations by England. I insist on the word ‘England’. In South Asia, England did have supremacy over a nation called British-India. This nation was less than half of the combined locations of current-day Pakistan, India and Bangladesh. Maybe roughly slightly more than one-third. This nation was not created by conquering any nation called India, in the subcontinent. Instead, when the English East India Company set up trading centres in some of the locations, the French government gave orders to the French trading centres to attack all English trading centres anywhere in the world. In South Asia, the French instigated some of the local rulers to attack the English trading centres. In most of these fights, French soldiers were directly involved. In some of them even Italian soldiers also stood with the French. South Asia at that time was around 2000 small and big kingdoms. However, in all these fights, the English invariably won. That was due to the superb support given to them by the slave populations and some of the kings who saw in them a very refined people. In the subcontinent, refinement is something not seen anywhere. Beyond that the fact that English is a planar language, while the other languages were feudal also was a very powerful deciding factor. As to the Bengal starvation, this is a new bit of history going round on the internet in recent times. The fact is that in the Subcontinent, around 80% of the population were slaves, even though they were generally defined as lower castes. Many of them were seen as half animals or domestic cattle by the higher castes.. The very understanding that they were human beings came with setting up of the British-India. Organisation like the London Missionary Society, though not allowed to work inside British-India was able to free the slave populations in the native-kingdoms with the active support of British-Indian govt. In British-India, around 99.9999999999 of the officials were the local people. And British-India was ruled by elected Cabinet ministers who were south-Asians. Both these people generally do have a disposition to view the lower populations with disdain. This continues to this very day. In current-day India, around 70% of the population live lives in various levels of poverty, starvation and slavery. The languages are terribly feudal and the words have the power to club down the lower placed persons. No one of the higher ups really care about this. They treat the lower classes as dumb animals. They are made to sit on the floor and addressed and referred to with pejorative forms of You, He, She &c. If there was starvation in Bengal, Great Britain or England has nothing to do with it. There was a British-Indian government in the location, which was committed to the welfare of the citizens there. However, the local landlords will not allow the lower populations to escape from their clutches. In the 1960s the lower classes tried to break out in a revolt. For, after the English rule departed, they were literally treated like wild animals. That was the famous Naxalbari movement. Many of them were summarily killed. The intellectual leader of the movement Charumazumdhar was taken to the police station and beat to death. This the reality of current-day India. As to the English rule in the subcontinent, it was built up and maintained by the support of the common people of the nation. No sane person of those times would have supported a shift from English rule to hooligan rule. Both Nehru and Gandhi were not from British-India. They were just individuals from the traditional exploiter classes of the subcontinent. A clear picture of how British-India was created can be seen by Search for Malabar Manual into which I have written a commentary. This book is free for download / reading in academia edu and archive org.

Ha ha LoL . No country will go to other country and do good. The invasion was because India was super rich country when Britishers arrived. They looted India and took heavy taxes from everyone. England will pay for its Karma. We all Indians love our fellow Indians . Islam will take over England , go save your country.

@@rajeshwarijanwadkar9369 First, your Lol and Ha, Ha could be very disturbing. Generally, as you might know, people do not mix or have a conversation with anyone they see in India. For, the Lol and Ha, Ha is generally used by the relatively low class to distress those who keep a distance. However online, anyone can speak to anyone and use a Ha Ha. Second item is that you are pretty well educated in the history that is taught in common school textbooks. These books are foolish and fooling. As to what really happened cannot be mentioned here in a comment. It is not easy to correct some 10 to 15 years of nonsense taught in school and college books. Since I am from Malabar, which was known as British Malabar, before the idiot known as Clement Atlee handed it over to the low class Hindi folks, there is not need for me to go and save England. It is true that England should be very careful. For people like you will definitely love to go there and make the place similar to India. As to India, it is run on feudal languages. England run on planar language English. The difference is terrific. In India, the officialdom which swallows the whole national wealth are the Aap people. However, below them are several levels of Thoo people. This is the real difference. When people like you move to England, you would love to convert the working class there into the Thoo people. From you Lol and Ha, Ha, it is obvious the power of your Thoo. It is literally like a menial class worker in India addressing his heighest superior with a Thoo. The superior will stink. It is best for England to send home all people from out including India. As to what really took place in South Asia during colonial days, you will get immense information from Malabar Manual written by William Logan. I have done a commentary on this. If you do want to know the incidences, you can read that book (for free). Or else you can continue to believe the nonsense you have been told by the Aap people (govt employees). As to how the Thoo people are treated in India by the Aap people, you can see from how the migrant workers are living now. There was no India or Pakistan or Bangladesh before British-India. There were around 2000 minute kingdoms. Fighting and fighting always. QUOTE: They looted India and took heavy taxes from everyone. END OF QUOTE. You have zero information on what took place inside British-India and what took place in the native-Kingdoms (now part of India and Pakistan). From your Lol and Ha, Ha, it is obvious that these kind of information will come out from your mind. Maybe you do not have any experience of going to an Indian government office like the Sales tax. Take care of you own country run by the Hindi folks. 70% are under the Indians. Only god can save them from Indian officials. QUOTE: We all Indians love our fellow Indians. END OF QUOTE. Do not tell lies. Aap people see the Thoo people as stinks. That is the truth about India. I have not written this much for you to read. It is mainly for others who might see you nonsense.

@Mahesh M V U I will give nicer try. British India was a nation with its own government and elected cabinet ministers. Bombay, Calcutta and Madras were three presidencies of British India. If the local elected government failed, the blame is with the local government and local officials. As to millions dying, it is a new history. However, in South Asia, no one cares for others. Even now, innumerable other language workers are literally starving, walking and suffering a terrible time on the roads. History writers can blame England for this also. England stole everything! Actual fact is Indian government officials are swallowing up the nation. Their pay and perks are multiple times that of an ordinary workers. British India was handed over to the Hindiwalas without any referendum. No sane person will vote to move from English rule to that under Hindi rule.

@Gutta Shashank There's no need for you to write so much. All of what you wrote are more or less there inside NCERT school textbooks published by the Indian government. And in Wikipedia Indian pages written by useless Indian academicians who are swallowing an astronomically huge pay and perks every month for 13 months a year. Everything you wrote is known to everyone who reads these nonsense. Google search for something different. Search for Malabar Manual. You can download it from archive Org or academia edu or Telegram. You get some information you would not have even dreamt of. You might also get to know what a feudal language is. Without knowing this, it is a very shallow attempt to judge and evaluate English rule

@@HasntMohi The Bengalis starved themselves. When supply was requested it was turned down on the basis of limited shipping supply due to naval buildup for the invasion of Normandy; or would you prefer D-Day to have failed? OK, if so, a failure at Normandy would have crippled Britain, given Hitler the time he required to capitulate Russia and seize the oil supply, drawing out the war and only exacerbating the impacts of the famine; and this time there wouldn't be any hope of a bail out from Britain. Churchill merely chose the lesser evil. Though you indoctrinated fools just need a scapegoat for all your problems.

According to Prof PC Mahalanobis the founder of the Indian Statistical Institute, at least 5 million were died as the direct result of the famine, and another 5 million died afterwards as a result of the famine related diseases.
