The video was conspicuously missing the promised mathematics and science. That kick is still worthy of mention for a few other reasons. This was in the era when kickers still led with the toe, offering less control over accuracy, and Dempsey in specific had a club foot on his kicking leg. Add to this the fact that this happened below sea level in New Orleans. Yes, his record has been broken, but the man was just so far ahead of his time.

I recall watching Steve Christie kick a 59 yarder back in '93 and that had minimally 5, maybe 10 more yards on it, so I had been waiting for someone to break the record ever since. And part of the problem is that kickers don't get a chance to kick long ones that often, because most coaches will opt to throw hail mary once it's past 60 yards.

This will definitely be broken. Ignore the fact that kickers regularly hit longer field goals in practice, the probability doesn’t matter because the sample set has no end date so you afford the NFL billions of chances to kick field goals, they have plenty of time to reel in the probability. New shoes could change physical limits (like what Nike air max did to racing records) a freak kicker with weird genetics and double jointedness in his knees (like what Michael Phelps did to swimming records) could all come along and redefine physical limitations. Add the possibility of freakish wind like the video dismissed, the odds that true perfection was reached and not a yard more could be juiced is far less probable

Well many records that have been deemed “unbreakable” even with scientific and anatomical proof have been broken. Prater’s 64 yd record was supposed to be unbreakable. Also, the 68 yd field goal likely would have gone in if it hadn’t been kicked in a humid, sea level stadium. It was recovered by the Jaguars player at 9 yards deep, so it was short a couple yards. Which could be made up for kicking at a stadium located in a place with thinner air. That alone goes to show that the record will likely be broken. Let’s also state that scientists 70 years ago did studies saying that running a 4 minute mile was impossible, unbreakable by humans. Until Robert Bannister broke the 4 minute threshold by half a second, a 3:59.6 mile. Now the world record is 3:43.15. That difference in mile running times is staggering. A once impossible time has been bested by nearly 17 seconds. A world record is only “unbreakable” until someone breaks it 🤷‍♂️

Thing of it is, again the physical part of this is what makes it impossible because kickers including Tucker for the fact injury becomes a big factor after 60+ yards. The more you exert your extremities the higher the probably of injury. That's why for example a 110 mph fastball won't happen. Now can there be a FG higher than 66 yards and make it? It's possible but a ton of luck rather than physical ability probably will happen. Because Tucker more than likely mustered everything in this kick, in the perfect environment in a domed stadium where no wind and any elements affecting the kick. The people that say Mile High stadiums is the perfect scenario, again that's not a perfect environment either, even with thinner air, problem with it is winds are a major factor even with thinner air, also add the fact that Denver is a mile up, winds once the ball is in flight are magnified because winds are already different being in Denver but even having the ball go 10 or 20 feet up winds at this height and at that elevation are elevated so it's not the perfect scenario. You also have to remember also for people that state history prior, technology and science back then was more limited than it is today. Today's science and physical limitations will make this FG impossible to break unless a better specimen with their feet can make this.

There's one thing you forgot: free kicks. A free kick is a FG attempt that can be taken when you fair catch a punt. The defense has to stay 10 yards downfield, and the kicker can run up on the ball from as far away as he wants. This is occasionally utilized when a team punts in the final seconds of the first half, and could definitely make a new record with the help of favorable wind conditions.

God thats funny. I'd bet Dempsey would laugh. It's almost as hysterical as the premise of this video. This guy talks about the unlikely launch angle (all 55 plus are launched very low) and the :circumstance. Dude, that circumstance has arisen often enough that while many are missed there have been 25 60 plus FG's made in HFL history, 10 of those in just the last 5 years, 14 by kickers still active with Gano Akers Maher and now Tucker equalling Dempseys 63 at sea level. Of course it will be broken, but there iIS a limit. Betore you pop off with such an air of unimpeachable authority, do your homework. In order to kick a ball farther and farther it must be comprssed more and more. Eventually a point will be reached that the ball will not hold it's integrity and either burst or not travel symetrically to the force applied, like trying to throw a potato chip.

"Let's look at the probabilities of why this record won't be broken..." "The probabilities of *why*..." doesn't mean anything, and demonstrates a fundamental misunderstanding of what probability is. "Forever" is a much longer time than you think it is; and the probability that this particular record will be broken--especially given the recent trend in the sport--is actually quite high.

6:42 - The science section is literally just 'well, there's a limit in pitching due to ligaments so there's a limit in kicking...and, without any proof, I think that limit is 66 yards...but also Tucker kicked at a lower than ideal angle'. It might take 20 years but I'll bet you $10 it gets broken. More stadiums are indoors, kickers will get bigger and they continue to improve. I say this as a Ravens fan.

Exactly. People don't remember that the 62 yard field goal that lasted for so many years was thought to be unbreakable. Usain bolt's record in the 100 m was thought to be impossible. As players become stronger and taller and nutrition and fitness becomes more sophisticated these records will sooner or later be broken. Even the long jump record was thought to never be broken and it was. For all of them there was science that says it is impossible. Junk science is not science.

Thus, the point I tried to make in a very long comment. But you brought the right stuff to the conversation. When I was a kid, the Baltimore Colts practiced at my school during the baseball/football overlap. I remember standing just a few feet away from the punter (Dave Lee) when he was practicing. He could kick 70-75-yarders nearly every time. Even from 20 feet away, I could feel the impact in my gut. I went down to the other end where Alvin Haymond was returning punts. When he took off, the dirt from his cleats was flying up about six feet in the air behind him! You really get a much different perspective on these athletes, up close. I stood nearby when they were doing practice plays. Linemen did what they would consider "moderate" contact. But up close, I felt that their friendly contact would have absolutely flattened me, and I was on JV and varsity in those days. Gino Marchetti, Jim Parker -- OMG, what BEASTS! (And yet, Parker was the nicest guy you'd ever want to meet. He liked to clown around with folks. Artie Donovan was a lot of fun, too. He retired when I was in 5th or 6th grade, but came out to school from time to time, afterward.) Oops! I digressed big time. Sorry.

I was a punter in college (U of Florida). As a punter we would practice with the kickers. In the 1987 season we had two kickers who could make kicks from 70 yards. One of them, Robert McGinty had the strongest leg I have ever seen. He was a transfer from the University of Auburn. I stood beside him and watched him kick multiple 70 yard field goals in a row. I also saw a 67 yard field goal made in a pre-season game, just before the half, not Jason Elam. This was a kicker fighting for a job. You would think making the longest kick in NFL history would have sealed the deal for him, but it did not. Unfortunately, I don’t remember his name. Consequently, I believe the record will be broken.

Science is a myth. I'm predicting someone will break this record within the next 5 seasons. There's a lot of amazing kickers coming into the league (Also a good tail wind would help the kick go further)

I wouldn’t say in the next 5 seasons, but definitely in less than 15

Especially since both Prater and Janikowski have both kicked them 70+ yards before...not in games but they've done it so it's possible. The likelihood if the defense not trying to block it at all is slim, and the angles are so low on kicks that far that defenders can block them quite easily by putting their hands up. Still, it's not even close to being impossible, just unlikely.

It was so insane to see this and have him in fantasy. I was flabbergasted when I looked at the points that day. I only won that day because of Justin. And didn't Lose overall and have to wax my legs as a result.

Math and science isn't always right. Records are meant to be broken.

His "Science" tells him it won't happen again, and my eyes having watched kickers routinely hitting 55 yard field goals and clearing it by plenty tells me it'll be done soon.👍

The issue is more of the conditions a coach would allow it to take place. The same conditions as this record kick is basically the only time it would happen. The kicking team has to be down by three or fewer and time would expire after the kick. If they miss, the team loses. If they make it, they either win or tie and go to overtime. Some coaches might not attempt it even at that and rather try for a Hail Mary or some music city miracle stuff. I think it will be broken, but it may take some time.

@@honolulublues5548 that's really it despite conditions and the kicker it's solely dependant on would a coach call a 67 of longer field goal attempt or would he just go for a hail Mary
