WHAT IS EXTENDED REALITY (XR)? By Patrick J. Kiger. January 6, 2020 "Extended Reality is an idea that’s been around for a long time. Science fiction writer Stanley G. Weinbaum may have been the first to envision it back in 1935, when he wrote a story, “Pygmalion’s Spectacles,” in which a professor invents a pair of goggles that allow moviegoers to taste, smell and touch imaginary things, talk to fictional characters and immerse themselves in a story that happens around them, instead of on a screen." source - The Franklin Institute

As I understood all these acronyms, XR means simply all VR (fully virtual world), AR (real world with added or changed attributes like added labels and info boxes, changed colors etc.) and MR (in most scenarios a real world with full virtual objects added) and is useful only as a short for all of them, however it's functionally (in real implementation) redundant, as MR can implement both VR and AR (these are just extreme use scenarios of Mixed Reality executed by high end MR device).

If anyone is looking for a good film/movie that talks about this issue, I'd recommend you watch "Surrogates" - (2009). Basically you have a bunch of imperfect humans (yes that includes both me and you) who are piloting their own individual drone (and a "Drone" in this context is a "perfect" robotic body) in a virtual reality world. Now while living a virtual life as a "perfect" person (e.g., no aging, no mental health issues, no insecurities, etc.) might seem cool and all, it all comes to an end whenever the headset is removed, thus you are back in the real world and in that movie you'll see that this "perfect virtual" world has only made things worse for society. At the end of the film there is no more virtual world and you'll see a bunch of imperfect humans interacting with one another! I think that technology (mainly Social Media) may have had "good intentions" in the beginning, but I think it has only made things worse for our society and the only solution to this is to "go back in time" and becoming less reliant/addicted to social media and technology!

If I’m not wrong, you can’t really interact with AR, or not to the same degree that you can MR. XR is just the name that all the different virtual realities have (it encompasses AR, MR & VR). But to be honest I’ve tried to learn from several sources and none of them ever seem to make it 100% clear or provide an explanation that allows easy distinction between these terms.
@elijahclaude34134 жыл бұрын
@@Smiley957 MR is not really a thing. Microsoft just wanted to use their own terminology, but it is pretty simple: VR is you in a virtual world. AR is augmenting the world around you. XR is a catch-all term for both (and anything else people come up with).
@cridr4 жыл бұрын
@@elijahclaude3413 exactly thank you, AR, is all they said for AR and MR, in AR you have objects spatially correct positioned, but you can interact with them, there is no limitation to not take that box and throw it, you can see virtual objects on top and behind real objects, so you could create more of them to the extend that they fill all the room, and it will be VR. Even VR has AR by the fact that thy usually give you some hint that you will hit something real if you move( the chaperone system).
