Dr. Paul Saladino's claims on the Joe Rogan podcast. Part II of the fact-check. Yet another Joe Rogan podcast touching on nutrition...
109:38 as long as you have high HDL, increasing LDL has very little risk. very little cardiac risk.
common idea that HDL-c makes up for high LDL-c. this idea of the protective HDL-C comes from correlation studies. bag 2. when it was tested directly, in randomized clinical trials, bag 3, raising HDL-C did not improve cv risk. meta-analysis of 39 clinical trials:
“observational studies suggest a simplistic hypothesis for HDL-cholesterol, that increasing it would reduce cardiovascular events, but substantial trials do not support this concept”
genetic studies confirm that higher or lower HDL-C determined genetically didn’t change cv risk
bottomline, for heart disease, raising HDL-C probably does nothing and certainly does not make up for high LDL-C
LDL-cholesterol and triglycerides are helpful markers but it's well understood that the real cause of heart disease is the number of lipoproteins, the vehicles that carry cholesterol and triglycerides. In most people, high LDL-C and high triglycerides indicates high concentration of lipoproteins, but some people are exceptions and may have high lipoproteins but normal LDL-C or vice versa.
111:21 insufficient evidence to say high LDL in someone who is metabolically healthy is the same as in someone who is metabolically unhealthy.
we’re acknowledging high LDL-cholesterol is a problem, but maybe if I’m metabolically healthy, if the high cholesterol is the only issue, maybe I'm an exception? meta-analysis: lowering LDL-cholesterol in different contexts.
‘there was a reduction in cardiovascular events (heart attacks, strokes) in people with diabetes which was similar to the effect observed in those without diabetes” and “There was a reduction in mortality with lower LDL cholesterol in people with diabetes, which was similar to the reduction in those without diabetes”. they conclude “Among all trials, the effects of cholesterol-lowering were similar with or without diabetes”
So whether they had diabetes or not, they benefited by bringing ldl-c down to normal levels.

High Schools should require a high quality year-long statistics course to graduate. Far more important than Algebra 2, or Trigonometry. They should also have a full year of quality economics. People need to understand scientific results to make good decisions for their health and the health of their families, among other issues, and as voters, understand when a policy is more likely to work or fail, and what are the likely unstated results. And only choosing to include wars, politics, panics, and protests and such in history courses is pointless. At least half should be the history of science, technology, infrastructure, trade and thought. Some understanding of the law, business/accounting, and tax law (even if it changes time to time) makes sense too. Not the most exciting topics, but they matter. Home maintenance makes sense, too, as neglect and mistakes can cost you a lot of money when you own a home. Your home could even be condemned, and have to be demolished, and leave you homeless and bankrupt.

Joe's statement, "We should eat that we evolved to eat" is a ridiculous point for many reasons. 1. Just because we evolved by finding a way to get more calories efficiently in nature (killing and cooking animals) doesn't mean we necessarily need that particular vehicle (meat). Nutrients can be gotten from many sources. There are no magical nutrients in meat. 2. Just because people have been doing something for thousands of years doesn't make it optimal. People have been smoking tobacco and drinking alcohol for thousands of years. Does that mean we need those vices to be healthy? 3. Part of our evolution includes ethical evolution. We now condemn outdated acts of cruelty like slavery, witch burning, child whipping, wife beating, etc. We don't need to harvest and slaughter animals for food. We could (if we chose) condemn that outdated act of cruelty too.

Just stumbled onto this channel, so refreshing to hear from an actual scientist who applies science and critical thinking to the statements they make. You earned a subscriber, love the vids! And btw, hate that ppl like Dr. Paul Saladino get so much attention in the media. Guy went from extreme raw vegan to extreme carnivore to extreme this and the other just to say neither works (later on he admitted to getting muscle cramps etc. on the carnevor diet and switching diet (again)). Moderation is rlly the key, not everything has to be so extreme, and not everything is inherently bad or good due to one small compound or isolated observation.
@YeahWellShutUp
@YeahWellShutUp 8 ай бұрын
Moderation is key? Why? Doesn't it depend on your goal? Most people look like shit once they reach 50, and most are borderline crippled by 80. Do you believe that living a "normal" lifestyle of "moderation" is going to make you an exception, or are you just accepting that outcome? If the latter is the case, just be aware that those who adhere to any extreme diet have a different goal than you. If you take the same actions as most people, it is highly irrational to expect a radically different outcome.
@fedekoen5996
@fedekoen5996 8 ай бұрын
@@YeahWellShutUp Moderation in terms of including an array of different types of foods in your diet (whilst sticking to only whole foods with lots of berries, pulses, whole grains and dark leafy greens - which is already what literally only (guess) 1-5% do anyways, making it unusual). Going all out excluding an entire foodgroup (carnivore) or macro nutrient (Low-fat vegan) to gain an "exceptionally" healthy state usually leads to the opposite. Excluding junk, processed meats and sugars is already a big leap compared to the tendencies in society - and will set you apart from the norm in a healthy way.

Your work on these two videos was simply astonishing, and I also admire your resolve to always mantain a logic point of view throughout the videos. AND, on top of that, I learned a bunch with your fantastic explanations of the studies. What can I say... you really made nutrition simple! Huge thanks for all of your work.

He hit a home run with this video. It's like 60 minutes with the doctor highlights. The evidence is there, but it must have taken a lot of work. Glad he did this as it references some very important justification for a healthy plant based diet high in fiber. I'll refer to this video in the future when speaking to family members who wish to listen.

Gill, A Great Big Thank You for all the work you do in this field. As a scientist (Biochemist - Glycolysis/Photolysis/Oxygen Evolving Complex/ATP Synthase), I fully appreciate the need for real data and evidence rather than individual 'comments or what is out there on social media. Thank you also for all the RCTs and Meta Reviews that serve as an excellent reference base. For me, I find it would be a real concern if this Doctor (MD) is advising patients of his views on Cholesterol and Plants.

Wow, I am so happy I found you. I bought the carnivore diet "wisdom" and ate this way for almost 6 months. I literally was SO exhausted that I couldn't even do a simple 30 minute walk anymore and I used to exercise much longer. It for sure was NOT a healthy diet for me!!!

@ohgeezrick2019
@ohgeezrick2019 3 ай бұрын
@@edgbarra There’s a couple reasons I think it appeals to people. One is that it is inherently low carb so it will put you in a catabolic state, which in turn breaks down your fats (and muscles) for energy. So it’s a good weight loss mechanism, and the high protein intake can help offset some of the muscular degradation. The second part is that the “diet” often claims you can eat as much meat as you want and still lose weight. Frankly I have no idea if this is true, but I am doubtful of that claim. Regardless the high protein keeps you full longer, and it doesn’t feel as restrictive if you don’t have to starve yourself.

Excellent video. I eat plant based but I am not a vegan or vegetarian. I also have a science background . With all that's said the way you break down how to evaluate and weight scientific literature is very impressive. You should construct a workshop on how to do this as it is invaluable to discern through the "experts" and media driven headlines/conclusions. Looking forward to your more in depth video on your mother and her conquering her ibs through empirical analysis.

This right here illustrates the problem with the term plant based. You often see it used for a diet free of animal products. But here you are using it in a more logical way. A plant heavy diet should be what the term plant based means. I am an ethical vegan and my diet is not 100% free of animal products. There are cases where consuming animal products is fine. If someone gives me their leftovers from the steak house; it in no way supports the exploitation of sentient beings. The damage was done when the steak was ordered. Also, bioidentical products like "lab grown" meat are fine too because it doesn't involve the exploitation of sentient beings. Terms can be so confusing sometimes.
