A popular device used for quotation and storytelling.
This began on the *chan imageboards, where quoting text places a Less or Greater than symbol in front of it, turning it green. This effect can also be done manually. Before long, this feature was put to innovative use. When quoting another post, greentext is frequently used for summary, criticism, and ridicule. Its other major use is storytelling, in which a lengthy story is told through fragmentary statements in greentext.
Greentext became highly popular for both of these functions due to its convenience. When quoting a post, it is easier to summarize than to respond in full. When telling a story, stringing together sentence fragments is a grammatically easier alternative to prose composition (it also makes for lighter reading).
This feature has become so widespread that it is sometimes used outside of imageboards (eg KZbin comments).

This story summed up one of the major drives of the creatives that give themselves up to Fantasy and Sci-fi, for if we are unable to visit new places personally we can still make them with our imaginations and step foot onto these new worlds in our dreams waiting for the day when we as a people no longer need to dream and can visit these new wonders in person.

This reminds me, everyone should image search Xmen Wolverine Syllabus. Entries include Introduction: Getting to know you, and how I get my hair like this. There's also notes in red pen on the Syllabus from Xavier, and not *all* of them are angry!

The other galaxies (at least in our local group) are so far less far away than the stars are to a new starfaring civilization. Andromeda is only a handful of times farther than the edge. Kind of a sad civilization to simply wait for it to reach us.

I just hope that I shall live long enough for the beginning of the great dream of exploration to start. To see the moon light up at night. And to see mars and every other world shine and sing with lights and radios. I just hope I shall see the sky’s of mars the lava pits of Venus and the sun rise of mercury. That one day all will look up and see a better world one of wonder and exploration. Of indication and discovery. Of a time that shows the best of us.
