Awesome video. Thank you very much! Answered a couple things i didnt know like how many species do this and who if anyone is watching. Ive been watching the hares locally and they are definitely at a disadvantage. If the hare hears you coming and feels safe, it will try to hide on snow but if you are coming fast, they revert to freezing in place.

From what I've learned, I believe that socialization is a huge factor in how easy it is to domesticate an animal. Most domesticated animals are highly social such as rabbits, dogs, cattle, horses, some birds like chickens, goats, etc. Other animals that are similar except for being solitary are hares, zebra, and some bird species. There are others factors, but socialization definitely makes a big difference.

That was a super awesome episode!!!! I work with rabbits as lab animals, and our handling/training amount is about in the middle of Jessi’s rabbits vs the research hares. Very noticeable in arctic foxes. The one we cared for in a Florida sanctuary grew a winter coat every winter regardless of temperature. However with arctic foxes it might mean their demise because not only are they more visible to predators, but as it warms further north red foxes are moving into their range. And even preying on them since arctics are smaller.

I always assumed it was one of the bunnies that lived under our deck until I found out that only Snowshoe do this. Now I am wondering if it was albino but without the red eyes or if it was actually a snowshoe someone had displaced. The weird thing is that I only ever saw it in late fall and throughout winter.

Awesome, we know so much about Evaluation, I can't believe people don't think it is real. A while ago I saw a video where they moved an animal to a different environment to effect a change and then brought them back to the initial place. When they were taken back to the other environment they adapted very quickly. That's what junk DNA is for though, right? Watching the rabbits reminded me that we have a chinchilla named Hank, named by my daughter.

Isn't wjite actualy a colder color? It absorbs less heat than darker hair. So they give up being warmer for camoflauge?
@bitsnpieces116 жыл бұрын
Weelll, think of polar bears and caribou, their white hair actually allows MORE light through to warm the skin, I suppose by letting light bounce back and forth instead of being absorbed. The caribou hairs are hollow for insulation.
@requiembeeblebroxx6 жыл бұрын
I suspect they get more advantage from camouflage than they are losing in failure to absorb heat. I'm also not sure that these species spend enough time basking in direct sunlight to get much heat that way anyhow (though I am definitely not an expert in this part of biology, so maybe solar-powered hares are possible).
@162manoj6 жыл бұрын
1) its more advantageous to be not eaten than to be warmer, so yeah it is actually favorable to be white and hidden than be a little darker and warmer, but with potentially shorter lifespan. 2) some animals, like polar bears, have transparent fur coats, which seem white, to allow for more solar radiation to pass through. Mainly because the skin of polar bears is black to help them absorb the heat. 3) they are warm blooded creatures, which means they keep warm by increasing their base metabolic rates and that body heat keeps them warm enough. (also im not sure, someone could confirm, but I think the core body temp decreases by a few degrees in winters). All this means its better to stay alive longer by staying hidden and catching more food and burning more calories. Hope this is clear :)

Some species are dying off, but being replaced by species more suited to the weather and color pattern. In the case of arctic foxes their area is being encroached upon by red foxes. This would be a common way evolution handles changes an ecosystem. Similar to when we depleted wolf populations in a given area some coyotes began to hunt together in order to take down larger game previously the food source of the larger canine. P.S. changes of the length of daylight also makes my budgies go nuts because of mating season. Thank God for cage covers. I'm giving them the cover is going on if you don't quiet down look right now.

Climate has changed many times, only now it is changing waaaaaay to fast for previous evolutionary adaptations to track correctly. I do wonder if there are other evolutionary mechanisms that track fast changes by a different mechanism that will prevent total species loss. IDK, something like the predatory animals become more visible to the prey or the predatory animals' starve before the prey population gets to low.

I am still often dismayed by learning that reproduction and violence are commonplace, but really??? Adorable Hares have violent sex? I am flummoxed.
@Ash-yh5oy6 жыл бұрын
I like to remember that we are always viewing the behaviour through human eyes. We don't really know what is happening and they can't just say and understand when she doesn't want to so they communicate in this way. Presumably the hares are not traumatised by the behaviours or else they would avoid mating and the behaviour would change.
@LKAChannel6 жыл бұрын
Consenting to sex is a very human thing
@tenaciousteacher15006 жыл бұрын
@@Ash-yh5oy I like your emphasis on point of view, yet the animal kingdom includes some pretty undeniable sexual trauma (death included) for unwilling and willing participants alike. How traumatized they feel by resulting injuries, etc. is unknowable from our point of view. However, the forcible nature of nature is something that I freely admit is something I would rather not anthropomorphise, but I do it sometimes anyway.
@GlacialScion6 жыл бұрын
It might make you feel better to recognize that as one of things that makes humans better as a species than many others. We're one of the least violent species on Earth. Not that we aren't violent; It's just that other species are more so.
@Ash-yh5oy6 жыл бұрын
Julie Yandell we're only human and it is hard not to sometimes look on those experiences as if these animals were experiencing them the same way we were and some are (traumatic insemination anyone? It's just easier since it is the way it is and we can't do anything to help them if they are actually being hurt to try and view it in a less human manner.
