How do you control the speed of their sweep to avoid face planting hard on the mat?

You don't. If you place your head correctly, the face plant is actually ok. Train it slow and controlled at first. You rotate instead of dropping. That makes the faceplant less rough. I will release a solo drill video in the next week to help with this.

hello Wim, in your video @ 2.35, what if your opponent pushes his right leg forward, along with pushing his right hip forward, keeps hold of your collar and bends his right knee, putting his right foot onto the floor, pushes his right shoulder anti clockwise, whilst pulling on his right arm, moving himself on top of your chest, it is my belief, he would neutralise your counter, and be on top inside your guard

That is definately an option on his part. If the timing is right or I don't counterrotate he will probably arrive in mount. If I do counterrotate and with correct timing, it happens like in the video. But that's the whole fight.

this counter captures the essence of bjj, becoming a rubber man, no strength but to elongate the opponent's movements enough so they are not functional anymore...

There is no free risk movement, that’s the beauty of the game, always a gamble between your skills and your opponents… maybe you can go for the ezequiel from closed guard, but maybe your opponent will sweep you…. The end result will tell who was right.. sometimes the ezequiel, sometimes the sweep… but if you don’t try you won’t develop your game..
