Yah, I feel like a lot of people call the pendulum sweep the flower sweep, when the flower sweep is a completely different sweep (different opponent posture too), and very much Gi oriented.

I have had surgery on my left arm when I snapped my radius. I still have the metal and screws in my arm and it really hinders my grip. I been having a lot of pain on my left ring and pinky finger after Jiu Jitsu, work, and even just trying to do pull-ups. Should I just buddy tape my pinky and ring finger? That feels like I might hurt both lol

The first sweep direction will be dictated by the foot your partner steeps up on. For example in the video you are sweeping to you left when your partner is stepping up with their right foot. You’ll have more success if you sweep to your right when they step the right leg as that’s the direct their head is going. Try it out 🤙

That's why the first way he did it is more effective. Swinging your leg can be a tell. Planting your foot on the mat is better imo. No tell and more powerful.

I'm shit at finishing armbars from guard or mount so the flower sweep is a move I like to chain from the closed guard armbar . The Flower sweep is always my goal while going for the armbar bc I don't expect to get it . Idk what it is but when I have the arm completely extended I always crush my balls when I start to apply pressure with my hips. Edit : People say it's because I don't have the elbow high enough, but I promise, I've seen PLENTY of people finish armbars where the elbow isn't perfectly above the groin , I cannot do that half the time because my balls get crushed . Period .

Should be able to armbar the wrist your controlling by bringing the leg over the head, assuming they post with the opposite arm.

I haven't tried this yet, but what's the purpose of the right hand pant/back of knee grip in the flower sweep? Is it just to keep their leg against your body and keep their weight on you to prevent them from having a better base?

You extend and lock out the arm that has this grip to push the lower body in the direction of the sweep.

The idea is flower is for when they are forward pressured, thus less capable of grabbing the leg. Meanwhile for the pendulum, you can grab off his posted leg.

@shaunb7614 yes. The reason he says its offensive is because youre aggressising onto your opponent forcing then into position. While the flower sweep abuses them being too forward and out of position to stop you lifting their leg slightly. Think them posting knee vs foot.

I've heard the first sweep with the gi pant and sleeve grip with the kick behind the armpit called the "Xande sweep" after Xande Ribeiro. The other one I've heard as called both flower (mayflower) or pendulum sweep.

Hey chu, I just finished my first BJJ tournament and I’m disappointed because I got 2nd but the last fight the winner got 2nd and loser 3rd I got the win due to points but I was in a turtle position after I won points to win and. He was trying to choke me when I was in turtle position as he put his hand in I bit his hand and I feel so guilty he deserves 2nd not me any tips for future. Tournaments?

Seems like the pendulum sweep could be hit off a failed arm bar. You would already have the arm trapped and the leg up.

my professor teaches us pendulum sweep first, then next movement is pretend set up a pendulum sweep but swing the other leg to the other side and become an armbar set up.

Timing is usually different too. The Pendulum uses a leg as a counterweight to off balance. The Flower doesn't.
