Very good! Explaining the properties of each tool and stressing personal preference is a brilliant approach, as is not making this a video on how to trim. I self-trim my medium beard, which I keep around 4 inches. At the age of 76 I'm comfortable with either tool. Usually I prefer scissors to trim or shape, but sometimes after a while with the scissors I'll decide trimmers will be better for what I'm looking to accomplish. I think you misspoke around 4:48 where you said trimmers were good for a business beard "until the guards get too big". The beard gets too big or he guards get too small, your call. Manufacturers number guards differently, either in millimeters or in eighths of an inch. Clippers usually have longer guards than trimmers, and another difference is essentially that clippers are larger, more powerful, and designed for head hair. Your beard may be happy with clippers, but neither your hair nor your trimmers will be happy used on hair. The distinctions are important when you shop for or buy them, not so much when you use them. Similar distinction for scissors and shears. Each can be defined by blade length or handle design, but also by handedness. The physics of cutting keeps the blades together when used with the intended hand, or separates them slightly giving a poorer cut and shorter lifespan. Also, seeing exactly where you're cutting is easier. The handles of barber shears/beard scissors are designed for a specific grip, which you show correctly around 4:36. And again, after purchase the terminology doesn't make much difference. What does make a difference is the scissors' straight line you mentioned. It is vital to keep the scissors parallel to the surface of your beard, or the beard will be shorter towards the back. Keeping parallel is also important with trimmers.

I have used a combination of methods in the past but also prefer using a trimmer. I haven’t had a trim since November 14 when I went to a shop for the first time and I wasn’t impressed with what was done, I think I can do just as good of job myself. I also don’t leave scissors or my trimmer where I can grab them easily as I would want to use them anytime I had a flyaway or wild hairs sticking out. You can’t trim your way to a big beard. Be confident and trim a little at a time over a few days and don’t strive for perfection, there will always be something you’re not happy with.

I pretty much trim and shape my own beard. I use clippers to edge my cheek lines, sidelines and neck lineif the hairs are too long to be shaved with a razor and I normally use scissors to trim away at my sideburns as they tend to get very curly and make my face look very wide. I feel like with the scissors I have more control and as you said less risk of doing big damage. Then I’ll use The clippers to fade or taper the sideburns back into the beard and blend it in with my head hair. I do this myself as I get anxiety when the barber goes near my beard. A lot of barbers don’t listen and end up butchering your beard. I only get a barber that I trust to do the sidelines with the clippers followed up by a razor because I can’t see the sidelines properly unless I turn my neck which ends up distorting the line.

As I move into "big beard territory", I do find my trimming habits are evolving. I have to say, I'm a bit tentative right now, simply because this is my first venture into big bearddom. I think I just made up a word. Anyway, I use scissors on the 'stache and to clip away the fly aways but am using my clippers more and more in order to achieve the jawline angle, shape the forebeard and establish the cheek line. I did invest in a high end clipper simply because I don't want equipment quality to inadvertently lead me to a failure and damage what takes months/years to grow. I try not to be too aggressive with the clipper and will even stop the process before I am done and then look at it all again the following day so I don't end up with a short beard because OCD kicked in and I couldn't stop trying to even everything out. Sorry about the novel. Got on a roll, there.

I have a medium beard, for now. About 3-4 inches long, maybe. It's very curly, and I like keeping it in a natural look. I trim it mainly with scissors, and contrary to popular opinion, I use trimmers for my mustache instead! I'm growing my beard out long, and going for a bushy, freely grown terminal beard with tapered ends. I think scissors are great for doing very minimal, gentle trimming, for a more natural look, which can probably (hopefully) work also for a longer beard. Trimmers create a much sharper look. I also plan to braid my beard when it gets long enough to do so. That will also probably affect how I'll choose to trim it from then on. Oh, and I'm 31 years old, but already have a "salt and pepper" beard, somehow. But I quite like the greying colour.

When I used to keep a short(er) beard, I'd use the guards to keep it maintained and even. Excellent video, It can save a lot of beards. My beard is currently medium length (and growing). When I was sporting a business beard, I used a trimmer for cheek lines and scissors for lip line of mustache. Cheek lines seemed easy. I made the novice mistake of trying to get them to be even. I gave up when it approached a chin strap beard. The lip line of the mustache seemed like it would be easy. I would carefully use a scissors. How hard could it be to follow my lip line? Well, It was so uneven that I switched to the trimmer. In an instant, I had cut a notch in my mustache. I now use a beard barber. I learned two tricks for using a barber . The second is to explain exactly what you want done. The first is to watch many videos, especially Beard Advice Live in order to know WHAT to tell the barber. I am now ok with the lip line, but that is all I will do. I use both scissors and trimmer. One tip I learned from the videos: If I make a mistake, I stop. Better to let it grow in than to ruin my beard by trying to fix it. I put too much time and effort in my beard to risk ruining it. When it gets longer, I might do the maintenance trim of the bottom edge with the trimmer. Your videos make it clear how to do it, but I will not be doing your trick of setting it on fire first.

I don't like to trim. I'm gonna have to shoot you and Mayor a picture sometime for a trim advice video soon. But, when I do trim my longer beard, I prefer to use shears and only take a few ends off. Clippers don't seem to have the control or at least I can't control them 🤔 Always afraid of cutting into my beard on accident. Thanks DanC

I don’t touch my beard, I just use a trimmer to tidy up under the ear and around the back of the neck between barber visits :) once my beard gets longer I’ll probably trim the fly always :)

Hello, 25 and at the one month mark for growing my beard. (Freshly out of the military so no longer required to shave) so I am going to be growing a beard for at LEAST a year.. naturally I have no clue where to start. Can I get away with just a simple beard oil? Do I need more then that? Should I trim?? Or just let it go and find a shape I like and go with that?? Man... this is alot to take into consideration also... I need to wash it with actual beard wash correct? I'm lost and still learning.. with your videos im hoping to learn and have a truly amazing beard! So thank you! And keep on keepin on!! 😁
@jryanr20103 жыл бұрын
I've always wondered, when measuring the length of your beard, how do you measure it? Where do you measure from? And do you measure down to where the beard falls naturally, or straighten the hair out and measure the length of it that way so that you are measuring the length of the hair itself? Apologies in advance if you've already covered this in a video. I've gone back and watched many of your older videos but haven't watched all of them yet.
@DanCBearded3 жыл бұрын
I am actually covering that in a video very soon (I already filmed it!). You measure from the bottom of your bottom lip, to the end of your length. Measure it from the style in which you wear it
@jryanr20103 жыл бұрын

I'm 48 and have a medium beard. I do not trim my beard bcz I want to keep it 🤣 I trimmed it myself last year using clippers and ended up shaving it off and restarting ☹️ I do however trim the sideburns and 'stache lip line using clippers and the George Bruno "smile" technique

I'm interested in this technique you speak of. Gonna have to look that up!
@jtblb13853 жыл бұрын
@@jryanr2010 Yes! It's of the philosophy that, if you're face is "resting" while trimming, it doesn't give you as accurate a line as if you slightly smiled while trimming. As George says, it creates a killer line, and I agree! Highly recommend that video! 👍

I have heard the lengths mentioned over and over, yet I am not sure what is medium length in inches. What are the inches for each length? Plus I have used scissors for precision. I might use clippers (i.e.trimmers😁) for mustache over the top lips.
@shiju8083 жыл бұрын
Medium is maximum 8 inches. Anything above that is usually considered as a long beard.

Trusted Teacher, man I have a hard to be convinced to go to a beard barber because I don’t trust them, nothing against them it’s just my feeling. Also I want to trim up my beard but don’t want to screw that up either. I have a dense beard to a point at about 4.5 inches and then have about an inch a half of thin scraggly hairs. They aren’t dead ends I believe but don’t know to trim them off or just let them grow and hope the rest of my beard catches up. Any thoughts on this. Thanks

Scissors to keep the mustache out of the mouth. Seems like the only way to get a straight line for me. Wahl trimmer for the beard portion. I like reproducible looks. I'm on my 2nd Wahl trimmer but they last 10 years easily. I use guards but as I said it's basically a business beard. I'm 43 years old but only really started growing things out in the past several months.

Ok my bearded friends...I am sitting on my 3-4 month beard (first time growing longer than a month) and have experienced the initial 3-4 week itch before. But last night I had the absolute worst itch ever and couldn’t sleep because of it! I routinely use Honest Amish beard oil usually twice a day if not substituted by Mountaineer Brand beard balm. I use Every Man Jack beard wash 1-2 times a week (Viking Revolution conditioner on order). I’m trying my best to be budget friendly with my products in addition to making sure I’m using healthy products for my skin. I haven’t really had any itch problems for the last couple months...why would this be happening? Am I doing something wrong or simply need to get better spend more on my products? I hate to admit I came dangerously close to using the clippers to just cut it off last night. Sorry for the long post, Any help is appreciated!

Scissors just feel more elegant... I've seen videos of guys trimming their mustache lip line with trimmers and that just makes me so uncomfortable because just one random bump on the elbow by your cat and there goes 3 months of growth. With scissors, even if I mess up (which I have, many times already), it usually doesn't look that noticeable, and any mistake I made grows back in less than a week.
