What is the treatment for scoliosis? That is an important question that everyone has. Before that we need to know, “why do we treat scoliosis?”
Why should scoliosis be treated? You may ask if I am going to tell you about the cosmetic changes? Surely not. The cosmetic change comes at the end. The cosmetic changes are not all important for us because everyone will accept their child irrespective of how the child is. If I am a bit bent and if I have a small problem, I will accept myself. So the kids also accept themselves. We do not do the treatment for those two reasons.
The reason we do the treatment is that the bend would invite more problems for the individual. Only to save them from those problems we treat scoliosis. What would be the problems? What issues would that cause? There will be two types of problems. One is a lifestyle problem and the other is a life problem.
Lifestyle problem is if the nerves are affected, there is a chance for change in movement. There is the possibility of having trouble urinating and defecating. These are the lifestyle problems because, when scoliosis causes a bend it is not only the bone that bends. There are nerves with the bone and when the nerves are stretched the nerves will surely get affected. Therefore, urinating, defecating and walking and the very movement of the individual will be affected.
So consider that the center of my spine is bent. Let us assume that there is a 'C' shaped bend. The rib cage holding the lungs will slightly tilt based on the bend caused by scoliosis. That means it will get twisted. When the rib cage gets twisted, on one side, the space for the lung increases and on the other side the space for the lung reduces. Given that condition, over a period of time the children might have to survive only on one lung. If they have to survive on one lung, compared to those who have two fully functional lungs the life for those with only one functional lung is obviously less.
Survey says that the life of those children who undergo treatment for scoliosis gets prolonged by 10 to 15 years. The life span of those children who do not get treated, 10 to 15 years of their life span gets affected easily.
Either their lifestyle gets affected and they are unable to walk and because of their symptoms when urinating or defecating they suffer. Else they suffer due to the issues in the lungs. So, this is the answer for the question, "Why would we have to treat scoliosis?"
