I love movies that do this. For example, in Jurassic World people gave that movie a ton of crap because Claire was running from a dinosaur in high heels. The actress has said multiple times that it felt *strong* to keep the heels on. She didn’t have to erase her femininity in order to be a badass. Those are the female characters I love the most.

IT DOES NOT TAKE ITSELF TOO SERIOUSLY. It’s silly and fun like a cartoon, it’s light, with silly jokes and silly scenes. The characters are over the top as they are in cartoons, but more well rounded as it happens in movies. It’s just a perfect middle point. And now it’s a nostalgia masterpiece with all the 2000s vibes it gives off. Still love to watch this movie.

This is one of the reasons I love this movie and despise the 2010 mystery incorporated. It took itself too seriously and the comedy and lighthearted fun from earlier iterations just wasn't there. The writing is more similar to Riverdale than it is to the series it was based on.

I always liked they made Daphne the literal muscle of the group. Also a subtle note I never realized when the group split you can see them walking towards their own cars implying their infighting got so bad they wasn’t even traveling in the mystery machine together anymore. Fun fact: Tim Curry is a HUGE fan of Scooby Doo and had voiced the villain in "Scooby Doo and the Witch's Ghost." They offered him the creepy owner role here as well, and he was set to accept it before learning that the character would turn out to be Scrappy all along. He HATED Scrappy, so refused the role and was replaced with Rowan Atkinson! edit made for clarification

The casting was extremely perfect. Not to mention the soundtrack, which had Outkast, Busta Rhymes, and Sugar Ray. It's honestly so cool that Mark McGrath (lead singer of Sugar Ray) made an appearance in the movie. This movie is one of my all-time favorites for a reason. Obviously, the CGI looks dated seeing how it's been 20 years since its release and we now have CGI that looks seamless and real but it's nice to see that. It's nostalgic.

The other 3 were fantastic too! Even in the cartoon tho Shaggy always stands out with his goofy way of speaking, having the titular dog as his best friend, and being the comic relief. I didn’t know how solid an actor Linda Cardelini was until years later because she became the definitive Velma for me.

I think the PG rating, looking back, helped it not rely as heavily on the raunchiness as it could have which kept the "scooby doo" vibe. A good example of this is shows like Riverdale who lean more on the "grow up" aspects and less on the cartoon which causes it to basically not be able to exist without these melodramatic elements

This movie ruined a central core point of the original cartoon: The monsters were always fake. There was no supernatural powers. No ghosts. It was always a scam. Scobby Doo taught children skepticism about the supernatural. But in these movies, there was no 'mask reveal' showing everything was fake. Instead, it was real magic. They kept the superficial similarity of the characters, but ignored the central THEME of every single episode: Magic isn't real. Supernatural isn't real. There are no ghosts, no monsters.

Scooby do was never about "skepticism in the supernatural", it's about a group of kids solving mysteries. regardless of if theyre real or not.

@@0MidnighttheDragon0 I grew up in the 70s watching the original Scooby-Doo,. The original series most definitely IS based on mysteries that turn out to be hoaxes. Literally, every episode ended with a real person being unmasked. In fact, even the predecessors that Scooby Doo was based on had the theme of supernatural hoaxes. The later 80s spinoffs were mostly junk with the exception of a few gems. Quoting Wikipedia: "Each of these episodes features Scooby and the four teenage members of Mystery, Inc.-Fred, Shaggy, Daphne and Velma-arriving at a location in the Mystery Machine, a van painted with psychedelic colors and flower power imagery. Encountering a purportedly supernatural monster terrorizing the local populace, such as a ghost, they decide to investigate. The kids split up to look for clues and suspects, while being chased at turns by the monster. Eventually, the kids come to realize the paranormal activity is actually an elaborate hoax, and-often with the help of a Rube Goldberg-like trap designed by Fred-they capture the creature suit-wearing villain and unmask him or her. Revealed as a flesh and blood crook who used the costume to cover up their crimes, the villain is arrested and taken to jail, often with the catchphrase "if it weren't for those pesky/meddling kids"" You're like someone trying to tell me Michael Bay's Transformer movies were good because of homages to the original and because he cast Peter Cullen. To anyone who grew up in the Transformers G1 era, they're utter trash. Or that Disney's replacement of Avengers EMH with Avengers Assemble was an improvement. This movie is "OK", but I don't like the bad CGI and plot that throws away a lot of the themes of the original just because James Gunn wasn't to "amp things up". For example, Velma and Fred were heroes to me growing up because they were logical, scientific, engineering oriented problem solvers. Fred would often design contraptions with Velma's help to trap the ghost. Replacing this with magic essentially undermines Velma and Fred's character talents in favor of slapstick. The best thing I can say about it is inspired casting. If you want to write supernatural stuff, it can be done well, look at the 80s cartoon "The Real Ghostbusters". This wasn't it. This was a comedy slapstick movie, not a 'mystery'. And as a kid, I read mystery or detective novels not because the solution was 'magic did it'

And they also had the contrast of Velma being full of it with her "career taking off" when she is shown in therapy and mockingly not even remembered for being a mystery inc team member-over the top yes, but the brains usually behind the desk is usually the one only the team knows/thanks. And arguably, she was never exactly "ditzy," either. A little careless and made helpless at times, but she was always a "curious cat," and didn't scare easily. She had a good idea of what was happening, but usually didn't expect to be wrapped up in it the way she did, usually being the one to accidentally spring traps. She knew something was _there_ or was just generally trying to find something "off," but she didn't know "what" until she's in it, which isn't exactly a failure. Just really bad luck. Learning to be a badass had more to do with having a way to get _out_ of traps after she sprang them, more than anything else. She, herself, as a person wasn't exactly a problem that needed changing, which is a nice departure from the usual Girl Boss Transformations, too.

The weird thing about this movie is that is not really based on the classic cartoon but on the perception that adults that grew with the show had, like Shaggy being a stoner, Velma being a lesbian, Daphne being a damsel in distress, Fred being an idiot or Scrappy being evil, none of those where a thing in the cartoons, some where introduced or explored on later shows like Fred being dumb in a Pup named Scooby Doo, Velma having a female love interest in Mystery Incorporated, Shaggy being arrested for havin drugs in Harvey Birdman attorney at law or Scrappy being super muscular in the Apocalypse comics So is funny that they base their movie characters in aspects that werent part of the cartoon characters to beging.

I will never understand how Jon Faverau nailed The Jungle Book and giving us something fresh but still somewhat faithful to the original cartoon, yet failed with The Lion King. It's like in the span of three years he completely forgot what worked. Someone should've sat him down and make him watch The Jungle Book again to jog his memory. That being said, Scooby Doo is definitely number 1 on my list of live-action adaptations.

can we just highlight the fact that the CG version of Scooby is pretty faithful in both design and his erratic movement, plus Scooby's classic sense of humor is very well translated onto the CG Scooby's facial expressions. It's pretty clear the movie blew most of their CG-budget on Scooby's movements and design, because the other CG monsters are so fake-looking you almost forget that Scooby is CG as well.

The perfect ridiculousness of this movie is exactly why me and my adult friends will still get together to watch it. It hits the sweet spot of elevating the experience while still maintaining its foundation. One specific point of a good children's show remake is that it very intentionally includes humor that spans all ages, for current kids and adult nostalgia watchers. It has longevity with specifically 2000s kids because as I rewatched it, its humor aged with me. The fart jokes for when I was 7, and the Mary Jane joke for me now.

I think Scooby-Doo was monstrously underrated. I love it every time I watch it. However, another one from that pathetically underrated was Jose and the Pussycats. The songs were not that bad, they picked great actors, it had what has to be the most classic line in any cartoon to movie adaptation EVER, (Alexander: You know what, I still don't know why you're here. Alexandra: I'm here because I was in the comic book.) It had Parker Posey. When Parker Posey is given the right role, she's AWESOME. i love that that guy who hangs around velma is literally credited as "velma's friend" Velma spends a lot of time with Fred in this so I feel like they could have mixed things up and had her get with fred if they wanted to keep her straight. I personally love Fraphne but their relationship comes out of nowhere in this movie, and Fred has more interaction with velma. That being said I do love the friendship and respect building that came from Velma and Fred's interactions that were purely platonic. I feel like they probably hoped that we would just accept the fred and daphne ship as canon based on fan perception and not question the lack of build up. I did that for like 18 years and then realized it wasn't built up much.

I liked his understated comedy in the "Aladdin" film - made me go back to the theater two more times just to watch! The ad lib scene with him and Aladdin going on about spoons and jams had me in stitches! I think he played the role perfectly as someone who has to follow in Robin Williams' shadow. Let's be honest - NO ONE was going to outshine Robin's genie. So what we got through Will Smith, in my opinion, was a highly enjoyable and pleasant version.

Sarah Michelle Gellar hated wearing Daphne's purple go-go boots and would change into comfy sneakers whenever she was able. Freddie Prinze Jr. hated wearing the trademark ascot Fred usually wore in the original cartoons. Jennifer Love Hewitt and Jennifer Aniston were considered for the role of Daphne. The director, Raja Gosnell, wanted a real-life couple to play Daphne and Fred. His first choice was Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. Prinze Jr. didn't originally want to do the movie because he felt it wouldn't live up to the Scooby cartoons, but Gellar talked him into it.

I watched this movie again a couple of months ago as a 21 year old rather than a 7 year old, and it holds up. A solid 7 out of 10 with legitimately funny jokes. It was cringy and VERY 2002 at points(fart jokes and frosted tips galore), but even beyond the nostalgia it was genuinely entertaining. I grew up watching Whats New Scooby Doo, so I'm sure that had an impact, but I think even without that context it's just a solid movie with genuinely scary moments and legitimate tension. If people's souls didn't go back into their bodies this is just Scooby Doo meets John Carpenter's The Thing.

It's cool to see such a positive take on the Scooby Doo live action movie. As a kid, I was a huge Scooby fan...and was massively disappointed with the movie. It just felt way off base compared to the cartoons, too... whacky maybe? Some of the darker, sightly more serious Scooby Doo animated movies were among my favourites, and I loved the real-life mystery format of the series...and I guess it was the lack of both of these elements that disappointed me. The movie just seemed goofy, with unrealistic overly 'cartoony' characters, and a plot not true to the heart of the originals. But hey, as I said I'm delighted to find not everyone agrees with my perspective, it's cool to see such a following for this iteration of the beloved Scooby :) But it wasn't for me.

Definitely hit the movie live action adaptation sweet spot imo. The body humor makes me cringe to remember, but it certainly embodies what makes Scooby Doo fun but not too scary. One of my favorite live-actions is the Casper movie from 1995 and I believe it was a wonderful adaptation as well and to see that you just have to compare with the other live-action movies that were made after that with different stories, they can’t hold a candle to the first one made in 1995 with Christina Ricci and Bill Pullman because this one was deep and emotional while still had the charms of the original content and even expanded it’s Universe while the other ones even though they were fun and entertaining they weren’t as deep as the first one

As a child I was horrified and deeply hurt that Scrappy-Doo was the villain, but now as an adult....I still am! #JusticeForScrappy That said, finding out that it was originaly intended to be for adults has softened my perception of the whole film since I can see the appeal and the joke for that generation. As a kid I didn't really get the jokes and I found the tone uncomfortable. It's left me with mixed feelings for kids shows that overdo the adult in-jokes at the expense of it's target audience. I think if it had been allowed to be what it was intended to be it would have had a better reception overall, with fewer confused children.

I was born in '69 so I grew up with Scooby & the gang and they were one of my favorites in my childhood. I took my own kids to see the live action movie and really loved it, it was a family favorite for a long time, we must have worn out the DVD and seen it several times on the big screen over the summers when our local movie theater had dollar movie days and revived a lot of favorites. Your analysis was great.

I *LOVED* this movie as a child when it came out. And now with a niece 18 years younger than me, she brought the movie to me saying “I think you’ll like this, it’s a realllllllly good movie”. So this movie holds up even to kids 20 years on. It was a nearly perfect adaptation and I’m glad we have it. If she ever brings me live action avatar though….

Legit this is my favourite live action adaption of Scooby Doo. Because it's original, campy, fun and unique. When it first came out critics hated it, but all my friends and I would watch it over and over. And even now, as an adult. It's still hilarious to watch.

Imagine how much better Smith Genie would have been if they had used some version of the credits "Friend Like Me" in the actual movie. Yes I will be repeating this whenever that movie is brought up.

I remember these movies being one of my all time favs as a kid, I’d watch them repeatedly. It’s so stupid yet so witty and smart that it’s not cringey to watch. The actors have great chemistry and I will forever identify with Velma, both in in the cartoon version and the movies :)
