FHP Troopers Responding: 120 MPH Pursuit - Gadsden County

On March 11, 2023, the Florida Highway Patrol troopers responded to a pursuit initiated by the Washington County Sheriff's Office after they requested assistance in pursuing a woman who had fled from the Northwest Florida Reception Center. Accordingly, the suspect had left the prison facility at a high rate of speed and almost struck one of the officers on duty with her vehicle after a K-9 alert on her vehicle. The suspect traveled north up US 77 at rates of speed in excess of 120 mph through Washington County until she reached Interstate 10.

FHP needs to catch up with other states and start using PIT maneuvers to stop pursuits. Trying to box in a fleeing driver in moderate traffic is impossible when the fleeing driver is willing to endanger themselves and the public to get away. PIT them and end the chase when you are clear of traffic.

@@HackHunter1835 First, remember that the camera doesn't show everthing. What you and I see in the video, surely isn't what the cop sees/knows in real life. Go back and recount. Make sure there isn't any traffic issues if she got pitted at 125mph. (she lost control on her own and ended the chase with a near death drive into a deep revine...with trees! She probably wouldn't have survived that wreck. It's good she just spun out and ran into the guard rail. Most cops don't use PIT maneuvers. They really don't...they can't. Those that do, MOST have to have training/certs and MOST precincts have specific rules/safety precautions to help midigate injuries/property damage. i.e., speed limitations (most cop cars have governors that also limit persuit speeds), weather, traffic conditions, etc. Is the perp wanted for, or witnessed to commiting a violent crime? vs a traffic violation, or some other reason reason but not known do be dangerous. While I'm all for PIT mnvrs, they can be dangerous to all involved. (perps, cops, civilians). In this case, no complaints on my end.

@@martinedwards4522 She may not have been authorized to PIT. They clearly stated they were going over 100mph (109-125) there was enough traffic to hold off a PIT for safety reasons. FYI- an average vehicle going 100mph takes ~7-8 seconds to stop under normal and safe conditions in a controlled environment. (not counting for the unsafe speed) and takes over a football field to stop. It does depend on the specific vehicle (and its condition, tires, brakes, shocks etc), road conditions...and whether the driver is skilled or asleep at the wheel. I would love to know exactly how far she skidded ...from the very moment she lost control until the guard rail stopped her (she would have kept going into the revine for sure) So while she's driving, in pannicked desperation at 125mph and NOT in a controlled environment, you expect a cop to PIT? The perp thought it best to drive the shoulder to avoid having to swerve in and out of traffic that is going half her speed. She does need to stop, but unless the cop is trained to PIT, most can't. BTW just in the past 3 years or so, ASP has 10% of the US national PIT deaths by average. The whole point is to prevent unnecessary deaths. But with ASP that # is climbing each year. Most departments limit its use to only the most high-risk scenarios. I don't know if this gal qualified for "high-risk" but she ended it just fine.

I'm bored so I wrote this. @14:13 I bet that Officer watches this video over and over thinking how amazing that parking job was right at the end of the chase. The side cam on the car was perfectly framed around the ending of the debacle.. Most of the time, the camera doesn't show anything, and we as the viewer are left to wonder. Unsatisfied. We watch a full chase, only to be left with seeing no action and an empty feeling inside... This shot however... it's beautiful.
