In the northwest corner of Sicily, Scopello is not much more than a hamlet above the coastline of Trapani. But for some time now, trend-setters like movie directors and magazine photographers have joined the locals in making this low-key location popular. The charming small location of Scopello Trapani might become a victim of its own popularity, but for now it is still an exceptionally beautiful location for a swim, a leisurely supper, or an afternoon adventure.
Between the fishing and resort town of Castellammare del Golfo and the Zingaro natural reserve sits the tiny settlement of Scopello Sicily. Despite being peppered with houses and a few seaside projects, this stretch of the Sicilian coastline is remarkably well-preserved by the standards of this island that loves to build. Sicilians travel to the Village of Scopello from as far away as Palermo to take advantage of the picturesque stretches of rocky shoreline and lush hillside.
While Scopello Sicilia is located close to the shore below, it sits on a plateau that is somewhat above sea level. The Baglio Isonzo, a historically significant baglio, and a number of charming, short alleyways make up the village. A baglio, which is akin to a masseria in Puglia, served as the administrative hub of an agricultural estate. The Scopello baglio, with its expansive courtyard that provides some shade and relief from the blazing heat, is now the center of the community. In the Scopello Citta there are café tables, a ceramics/souvenir store, and other locations where customers can purchase food, beverages, and ice cream.
A charming water feature with a trough is located outside the Baglio Isonzo, while a hotel and a few further eateries may be found in some nice tiny alleyways just around the corner. There isn't much more to the Scopello village than that; visiting here only takes a few minutes.
The Tonnara di Scopello is a wonderful place that is worth visiting only for the view because there isn't much to do there if you can't swim.
The best way to experience Scopello Citta is to combine it with a visit to the nearby Zingaro natural reserve or the larger pebble beach at Guidaloca, where there are more amenities. Scopello could turn into a full-day adventure if you'd like to have a leisurely lunch in the baglio courtyard or at a panoramic restaurant table high above the faraglioni, then spend some time swimming and tanning.
