Funny comment. But I'd argue that Barbarian was and is an amazing piece of music in its own right (regardless of this amazing performance). It's an incredibly complex piece. Here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aaWam6eNgKeWhNk

Incredible compositions by British computer composers, Rob Hubbard (Monty and IK+) and also Richard Joseph (Barbarian). It shows how far ahead they were at the time. I would loved to have seen a Martin Gallway tune in there too.

TRIVIA: Conan the Barbarian, Conan the Destroyer..Probably the best and most complete movie soundtrack ever written!.. Basil Poledouris the "unknown" MEGA-Composer... Give respect to the mind behind Conan Legendary Music....
@grarghov16 жыл бұрын
Poledouris was indeed an underrated genial composer of Hollywood, however for "Conan" he only picked up the good ol' swords-and-sandals movies vibe. Just check on this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mnLTeoCgp9NljMk Actually Miklós Rózsa did have a huge influence on Poledouris :)

Listen to the Soundtrack from the 80's Conan movies, composed by Basil Poledouris.
@harryhoudini7144 жыл бұрын
@@Dynamitarian its not "ripped" as much as "inspired" by the Conan Soundtrack. However, it is clearly based on it. Listen to Soundtrack of "Conan the Destroyer" (the second movie) called "Elite Guard Attacks", around 1:30 you can basically hear part of the Barbarian Theme nearly one to one. Still, they did not just copy but "enhance" it, so this indeed could and should be used for a new Conan Movie, that I hope will never exist (especially if you look what kind of gender bullshit is going on in todays Hollywood)

In this score, the karate tune is not from IK+ as listed, but rather from international karate, an earlier game. Although IK+ was on the c64 and Amiga, international karate was only on the c64. I also read the melody in the international karate song done by rob Hubbard was was ripped off from Ryuichi Sakamoto , who wrote a film score merry Christmas mr Lawrence, which if you listen to has an identical melody. The song was composed around the same time the game was made. On the other hand the ik+ music was done by Dave Lowe and not a rip off..
@petterlindgren10 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I've now updated the title and description! If I remeber correctly, the IK+ tune on the Amiga is a bit similar to the International Karate tune on the C64.
@c64audio10 жыл бұрын
Petter Lindgren IK+ on the Amiga was an enhanced port from Rob Hubbard's C64 version by Dave Lowe. While he enhanced the sound, he did not compose it.
@hespora6 жыл бұрын
Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence is *very* similar to International Karate, yes, but it most definitely is not identical. The similarity is almost uncanny, but then again, that is to be expected. They're both working in a pentatonic scale, where you just don't have all that much choice. But seeing as the rhythm is close to identical as well, I'd be very surprised if Hubbard hadn't at least heard the tune before composing IK. I bet every composer has done stuff that is inspired up to even copied from somewhere else *WITHOUT THEM REALIZING* that at the time. I know I do. Still surprises me though. I've seen an interview with Hubbard, where he explicitly said he came up with the tune himself. And as he wasn't ashamed to admit he stole stuff (Delta was a rip-off of Philipp Glass's Koyaanisqatsi score, and he said so himself in interviews), it just surprises me that, if both tunes were "borrowed", why would he admit that for one, but not the other?

Thanks a lot! I really appreciate it. I never played the game but must have heard the tune "by accident" sometime when browsing through some random sid tunes. The concert was fantastic, I went there actually only for the C64 medley because I do not know a lot of modern games, but everything else was impressive too even if I did not have any reference to most of it besides the NES songs. Had I known it was this good, I would have got tickets for both the friday and saturday performance.

It just goes to show good the music composed on these humble 8bit computers really is. Change the sawtooth and square waves to orchestra intruments and it wouldn't sound out of place on a film musical score.
