This song is associated with the end of the Soviet Union and the tearing down of the Berlin Wall. The Scorpions played The Soviet Union in 1988 and 1989. On their 1989 visit, they noticed big changes in just a year "Winds of change".

What gets lost during this time is the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests where we actually saw millions of Chinese students stand up for democracy and human rights. No one knows how many people were murdered by the Chinese military when they cracked down but generations of younger Chinese people under 35 have no clue what their government did since the internet is censored. When push comes to shove the Chinese government is no different then the old Soviet Union or North Korea they are communist and every bit as controlling and brutal with their "re-education camps".

I remember watching East and West Germans tearing down the Berlin wall, using machines, hammers, their own hands. It was on cable TV and it was incredible to view - knowing history (good history) was happening right before my eyes. Everyone kept playing this song - that night and for days after. That song still touches my heart. Thanks for this.

Born in 1961, the year the wall was build. Always taught "beware of the evil from the east", only to find out 40 years later that there was no evil, only people that where taught otherwise. Now 20 years after that event try to teach my grandchildren one lesson for life: "Walls don´t protect, they divide." There are no races, there are only humans. Remember the days a US President want´s to build a wall at the mexican border and let the mexicans pay for it? This days the mexicans would be happy to finance the wall to keep away the american covid people of texas and arizona away from mexico. Every coin has two sides. The art is to flip it so that it stands on the edge and you can have a look on both sides.

When Scorpions were in Russia for the Moscow Peace Festival 1989, Klaus Meine was impacted by the ending of the Cold War and being inspired by all those hundreds of thousands of kids who came to the show and the feeling of unity. Ironically, Klaus wrote this song just months before the wall came down thus making it sort of the theme song of that event, even though it wasn't directly associated with it, as many have been led to believe. It's a nice fairy tale though. Klaus is a very sensitive, beautiful person who feels things deeply. You have to also realize that he grew up in West Germany near the Wall. It's very important lyrics. In Europe, it means something very heavy duty in that they have grown up with oppression and stories of that sort of thing, whereas here in the States, while we love the song, the impact isn't as meaningful. When they start the song, they always say (not a quote), that their ancestors came with guns, they (Scorpions) come with guitars. Wish I could remember that quote.

The "Wind of Change" that was blowing was the fall of the Soviet Union, which is what the song is about, but when the Berlin Wall fell on November 9, 1989, the song became the unofficial anthem for the German Reunification, an event that politically lasted from the fall Wall to the official reunification on October 3, 1990

The world would be quite different if Reagan hadn't been as charming a guy as he is and truly sought a friendship with Mr. Gorbachev. He could have said "Do not come" But that would have gotten us and millions of Eastern Europeans no where.

So very true. I was at The Scorpions gig at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin in '99. It was a concert to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall. During this song all these denim and leather clad, hairy-arsed, heavy rock fans, many of whom were former East Germans, were openly crying and hugging each other. That night we really did feel like brothers and we felt we could change the world. Sometimes, these days, I feel so sad and angry about where we ended up. I do wish we could rekindle the feeling we had that night.

When I was in high school in the 1970's a neighbor hosted an exchange student from East Germany. The Berlin Wall still existed. She was utterly amazed that they could literally take her shopping and to restaurants all over the city or even into a different US state without having to stop at checkpoints to show "identification papers". That's what East Germany and West Germany was like after World War II. Divided. No going anywhere without showing "papers", no crossing the East/West border to visit family or friends without government permission. I was actually surprised the East German government gave this teenage student permission to spend a few months going to school in the US. At any rate, this is a great song by the Scorpions, thanks for reacting!

She knows the song as of today...30 years later when it is played. “Wind of Change” is about the destruction of the Berlin Wall. The song speaks of sights one can visit in Russia, such as the Moskva River in Moscow that flows though Gorky Park, a local theme park. This is to portray the changing times of freedom of movement.

This video started with clips of the violence in the 1980s, the US hostages in Iran, the terrorists attacks in Beirut, the Soviet Red Army and the Chinese Army, the Cold War. It then transitioned to hope the fall of the Berlin Wall (reunification of Germany), the Pope visiting the USSR, Nelson Mandela in South Africa, and the meeting of President George Herbert Walker Bush with Mikhel Gorbachev of the USSR. (Sorry about the spelling) It was a strange time to be growing up in, you don't realize that history is in the making right in front of your eyes.

Our world has been through so much. When I was your age, our threat was nuclear war. Still is but on a smaller scale since the agreement to reduce arms. When they ended the Cold War and brought down the Berlin Wall, we learned that if we are to survive we must strive for democracy, freedom, equality, environment protection … live like brothers. And although we disagreed, it was civil, it was negotiated, it was just. But now, I can see we’ve learned nothing from our past. 30 years ago I remember we had hope in our hearts, now hate dominates. It took only one man, just like it did in Germany, with Hitler. This song used to be inspirational, now it’s an anthem for what we lost, once again.

This was during the Cold War. I was stationed in Germany and have lived there for 20 years. I have family there. It was very sad to hear of all the people that have died trying to get into West Germany at the time. As a military guy, we could see the border but were always instructed not to say or make any gestures towards the East German guards. In the week or so of the wall coming down, there were people still dying trying to escape. Many years later as I was staying with family over there I had the chance to go to Checkpoint Charlie. They have a museum where you can go in and see all the different ways people tried to escape. The truly amazing part, there is a restaurant in Berlin that used to be a tv tower. It actually rotates 360 degrees giving you a great view of Berlin. We had gone up there to eat and as you look out the windows you could see the line between East and West. I wasn't a real line but you could see where all the newer buildings stand and where all the old East German buildings stand. You're right about how deep this was for so many people! June 12, 1987 West Berlin "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall"! ~Ronald Reagan The "Wind of Change" that was blowing was the fall of the Soviet Union, which is what the song is about, but when the Berlin Wall fell on November 9, 1989, the song became the unofficial anthem for the German Reunification, an event that politically lasted from the fall Wall to the official reunification on October 3, 1990.

This wasn't Desert Storm. This was November 1989, when the Berlin Wall fell. I was stationed then in Germany (76th US Army Band). I had some friends in the 298th US Army Band (Berlin), who were partying on that wall with the students and citizens when it came down. A great feeling of relief and progress... at the time. Things change.

The video also shows the protest in Tainan Square, the man trying to stand in front of the tank and the part where you thought something violent happened was the arrest of a student protester. There was a lot going on in this video.

They were listening to the wind of change, song was released 3 days after the beginning of desert storm operation... a few image of the video clip probably comes from it. But it was written by a German band in 1990 and there was also the destruction of Berlin wall in 1989 and the end of the cold war a few years prior. There are several reference to PostdamPlatz that was divided in 2 by the Berlin wall, so the song can be applied to all war and revolution, seems to be more linked to the Berlin situation than others

Me hearing this song and watching you to fairly cool people react to it makes me a little happy and a lot sad. I am old, I thought I'd be long dead by now but seeing your reaction and comments throughout this song is a clear illustration on how really bad things happen in the world... a complete lack of perspective and history. First off this song is a heartfelt and very REAL celebration of the unofficial but quickly followed official end of the Cold War by a band that is from west Germany and specifically West Berlin. How anyone on the planet can be so "socially educated/indoctrinated by the media and the very few" but be completely unaware of even a smidgen of the real world just a few decades ago is shocking. Here's the deal, if you were alive during the Cold War and lived anywhere in a metropolitan area of the US, the EU, the UK, or for that matter anywhere in the world you lived under the very real, very present, very clear and present threat of certain death at any moment best case... worst case you'd be sifting through the rubble in the horror show and breakdown of civilization in a poisonous stone age world of savagery a lot like Mad Max afterwards. The number of times the world literally almost came to a horrific end during my own lifetime was shocking. My own particular generation both in the free world and in the USSR got a clue just a little bit and through sheer will power the massive race to the end of the world just stopped. Fear of "the other" no longer worked as a way to keep the masses supporting the delusion that propped it all up. Too bad SOMEHOW the people my generation would consider cavemen like thugs, goons, and buffoons along with the help of quite a few psychopaths and useful idiots has just decided to replay the entire recipe of fear and blame of "the other" to build a repressive order that nobody seems aware they can ignore and opt out of at this point. You guys listen to enough 80's music to wake up... maybe take a listen to Judas Priest Electric Eye as a start, that one's pretty clear and compare the lyrics to what you voluntarily submit to and way worse today. Then maybe start listening to Iron Maiden, Tesla, and a bunch of other 80's music and reinterpret what they are talking about. Wanna know why 60's, '70s, '80's music is great? You'll note that it was saying exactly opposite of what the TV (that would be the internet now), The government stooges, and "the man" was shoving down your throat. How come they seem the same today? We'll gee, that would be easy to figure out wouldn't it. Wanna know who the big bad enemy is today? Well do a quick run down of whoever you "hate" and are supposed to be scared of... "the other", whoever you think is absolute evil based on who you are listening to... a giant trick to distract you from the corrupt fools put in charge of the place. They certainly don't want the finger put on them...

I agree with everything you said except 80s music. It was projecting a generally positive message UNTIL 1984, when all the sudden it started promoting adultery, illicit drugs, tearing down traditions, anti-marriage, anti-personal responsibility, women becoming aggressive and independent, etc. 1984…yep…almost like it was “predicted”. Lol.

Hi Asia & BJ. Yea this was written about the time the Berlin wall was torn down. Mikhail Gorbachev was the President of the Soviet Union and Ronald Reagan was our President. During a speech at the UN Mr Reagan said to Mr Gorbachev. Tear down this wall. And he did. The Scorpions performed this song at the massive celebration reuniting East and west Germany. Great song.

This song is about the fall of the wall between eastern and western Germany, it was divided when USSR, USA, GB defeated Nazis and divided Germany. I grew up in USSR and lost family members, my grandfather was killed in 1941 defending Kiev, two uncles went to war, one was 16. Others were victims of Holocaust (I'm Jewish). So this song means a lot to me. Nice reaction.

I’ve always known the scorpions from rock you like a Hurricane. But never heard this song until tonight, in the dollar general. I paused in the aisle and tried as hard as I could to listen to the words in the chorus. My phone was in my truck so I couldn’t Shazam it and I had to memorize the “take me to the magic of the moment” or whatever. Anyways beautiful song. Really dig the vibe.

I remember this and the event that it symbolized so well as I was in my mid-twenties and debating about joining the Navy⚓ which I ended up doing and left to go a week before Desert Storm started. A lot was happening during that time just as it is now! But I think the stakes are so much higher now in this "information age" and the many more ways in which to wage war against each other now is a very sobering thought to say the least! That's why it's so very important that we learn to discern between right and wrong information and well, like I've always said, just go with your gut. Because I personally believe that that feeling comes from somewhere and for a reason! Thanks 🙏 y'all ❤

I remember watching live on the one of three channels (6,10 and 13) when Ronald Reagan spoke into the camera on live TV and said to Mikhail Gorbachev "Mr.Gorbachev, tear down this wall"?.Families, friends, and the German population were divided by "The Berlin wall" secured by armed guards.Once Gorbachev decided, the people used everything and anything to tear it down.Even the armed guards joined in.

The Berlin Wall came down between East and West Germany so everyone was united again 😃 It is emotional. Imagine a wall going up in the US between where you live and where your family live - that’s what it meant to a lot of people so they couldn’t see their families anymore for a long long time until the wall came down 😢
