This issue needs to be addressed obviously. All of the people on the streets need action taken by local councillors and community planning partnerships that fund local community organisations that house those in hostels and housing association temp flats in order to prioritise their budget to fund charities that feed and work tirelessly to get suffering people who ive witnessed looking for food and a break from sleeping in a skip. As Francis said these places are packed. Quite frankly the Scottish Government, Keir Starmer needs to see for himself and go out to places like Glasgow for example and actually get his butt into gear and sort this out. The turn around for housing in general is too slow. Councils are emptying flats in my local area for people who dont deserve them and take a long time to occupy them. Anti social behaviour bandits get their chance to get a place. What about people like John who has a heart. Thats my rant for today

It amazes me that people are still dumb enough to blame immigrants for the housing situation, completely turning a blind eye to the millionaires who own property portfolios ranging from 10's to 100's of rental properties and charge rent that's often double- triple what an average mortgage would cost. So why are we not building more houses? If you cant figure out that scarcity drives asset prices and that property is an asset, then you have no business commenting on the "housing shortage". Who stands to benefit from this housing shortage? I'll give you a clue, its not immigrants that own property.

I’m Scottish but live in London. When I first got sober I volunteered at a food bank but I had to give it up. Asians mothers and grannies would show up in £70k VW 4x4 and load up on free food. They’d be rude as fuck if we didnt have what they wanted. I ended up having to walk.

trouble is when addicts and mentally ill people get a home their lifestyle stops them from being able to maintain and sustain it so they usually get evicted for a number of reasons. i very much agree that our genuine tax paying citizens should be prioritised over people from elsewhere

What isn't true is her answer to immigration not putting more pressure on the homeless community in Glasgow. That's simple mathematics, i don't understand why she's saying that, it's not real life. The homeless people of Scotland have been failed by SNP for years and now labor. Let Scotland's homeless have the same rights as people coming in from other countries, it's shameful. What that woman was telling you is correct, its a funding issue. Homelesness is paid for by the council, refugees are paid for by the home office. Without the funding to run the hostels the council are paid by the home office for the spaces.

@@theboybrand I worked in homelessness services (not for the council). It doesnt miss the point, it IS the point. The problem isnt a lack of places to put homeless people, its a lack of money to do it. The council are well aware of how many people they are failing to provide their legal duty to, but without funding their hands are tied. Instead of complaining about people from other countries people need to start complaining at government level about the avaliable funding not meeting the need. Once that is done then we can start worrying about how many refugees ect we have, but as it stands just now you could kick ever single foreign person out of their accomodation within Glasgow City Councils catchment and it would make very little difference because they still wouldnt have the funding to pay for all the Scottish homeless people to take their places.

I did not call you racist but merely pointed out that you are making a racial distinction that serves no purpose. Scots are black white, Asian etc. This is important as you have pointed to the impact of immigration on homelessness services however as mentioned those without an immigration status cannot access housing and as such the impact is very limited. We need these services well funded and well managed and pushing a myth about "undeserving" immigrants damaging the services serves no purpose to argue for more funding or support and only asks those who administer these things to place more restrictions on the services which results in more overcrowding. What i did hear was you - Francis- stating that you thought immigration has meant that "native Scots" have been turned away due to this. You do later mention that they are overcrowded and the only reasoning you provide for this is the impact of said immigrants( that cant even use the service and aren't allowed). To me you ignore the multifaceted strains and pressures on these services such as funding cuts, reduction in support services, the housing crisis, cost of living crisis to name but a few. Can i recommend looking to see if you can get someone from a charity such as Shelter Scotland or a Citizens advice bureau as they deal with these issues regularly and can offer a different insight in the streets and how these services impact the issues.

This is a minefield and as a young guy around 84 i found Shelter and Mental health charities useless for housing some people.People with anxiety or depression got no medical points.Took the council on my self by writing letters to politicians local and national. Glasgow changed their policy within weeks and mental health conditions were allocated points. Everytime there is a crisis we blame the people with no voice. Nothings changed and it's not foreigners but uncaring politicians that we let away with not building houses for all. More power to that group you spoke to fighting for social housing

With your audience getting bigger you need to be mindful on what you are saying. Homeless accommodation is not full of immigrants at all, not all Scottish people are white ... unfortunately with individuals experiencing addiction issues they live a chaotic lifestyle and days can turn into weeks and when they are placed in homeless accommodation there is rules in place they need to follow one main one being use to the accommodation fit for purpose and unfortunately due to the lifestyle they loose track and don't stay at their accommodation meaning their placement gets closed so someone else can stay may that be an immigrant, teenager, family etc. Most accommodation have rules in place for no drug use which is a safeguarding measure for staff and other individuals within the accommodation again unfortunately this is a rule individuals with addiction issues struggle to abide by. Homeless crisis is not black and white and it definitely isn't due to immigrants. If you and your children lived in a country where you'd go to sleep every night wondering if yous will wake up alive or dead would you not want to go to a safe place for a safer and better life for your family? Of course you would. People don't realise how lucky they are to even be born in the UK, not everyone is that lucky and why can humans not help other humans regardless where they are born. We need to work together not blame each other 💙🌎

Having been through a divorce and owned property. I was made homeless. The council provided me with means to get back on my feet. I chose that. There is unfortunate people who just keep going back to old ways. Drugs alcohol etc etc. The system does work as long as you stick to the rules in place. Nothing to do with immigration. Its all about the person and do they want to move forward in life. Met one person whilst in a hotel and he was 9 times registered homeless. Its like prisoners who reoffen̈d just to go back to prison. The same happens in the homeless situation.

Mate I stayed in the mckintosh last year and half the people who are homeless have been kicked out of the hostels for abusing drugs and fighting so ye canny blame that on foreigners ffs

@ Your really missing a giant bit of information if you think your son not being able to get a council flat is to do with illegal immigration. Even back in 2007 I was told I would be bottom of the list and waiting years if I wanted a council property. The council don’t give flats to illegal immigrants either. I would also add I’ve known people from affluent backgrounds lie about being homeless to get a council property. I understand it’s an easy way to point the finger but it’s not that simple.

@ I do here what your saying but I stay in larbert I am 53 year old I have no clue how long he will wait we never thought it would be over night but people here wait 2 years from homeless he is not classified as being in urgent need because he rents as you can understand he can’t live with me forever and shouldn’t have to so he rents and works he’s doing the right thing and paying for everything but still left with nothing a boy the same age as him killed his self I am extremely worried i am not happy that they can house all these immigrants which here they put up in a hotel then they are getting housing just know me and the fulll of my area were send a letter saying there were only doing emergency repairs all other repairs would be put on hold because there doing up 180 houses for immigrants I struggle to get a doctors appointment and our hospital is a four hour waiting time min this sometimes is 10 hours and god help me if anything happens to me and I need an operation because lists are huge bringing more and more people here is shocking when we can not give to our own see having no where to stay or not working because your rent is so expensive I think that causes addiction so no I definitely don’t think they should be bringing more people here and Glasgow is worse my god people sleeping in the streets In this weather while these other people are in hotels how is that right I think the work of the streets is amazing and we need normal people that can speak very well to get all theses points across to the government to make change he’s doing that theses drug addicts must feel hopeless I personally don’t want anymore immigrants in Scotland when we can’t look after our own I am only putting my point across as so little of us has a voice

I've worked with leading figures in the City Council on trying to improve things for marginalised people in Glasgow. I'm sorry but there's a few myths that need dispelling: 1. Rent controls by themself are not a silver bullet for the housing crisis. They only helps certain people, while reducing the amount of rental housing overall. 2. Luxury apartments are not affecting the social housing situation. In fact they are helping it - rich folk who live in normal flats will buy them, and then THEIR normal flats will become available to people in social housing who are ready to move forward in their life. So everyone benefits. The homeless will be the last to benefit, it's true, so we do need more social housing. 3. Refugees are not to blame for the housing crisis.The broken housing market is responsible for the housing crisis. This is very easy to prove - there are 1 million empty homes in Britain, and less than half a million refugees/asylum seekers (of whom many will end up being deported). It is true that refugees are often placed in areas of high homelessness, which causes a conflict. But please don't attack the refugees, they have been through enough already - they didn't choose to be born in a warzone. Attack the previous British government who cut budgets for the the most vulnerable, and for their ridiculous planning regulations, and their bias towards homeowners and against renters. Most of all, attack the nimbys and wealthy urban landowners, who continue to profit from sitting on land and blocking the major changes needed for the city to flourish and the health and housing services to be properly funded.

Guys. I started contracts in glasgow 2024 after working in other cities around Scotland for years. I had a feeling I was in a game of where's Wally. Only difference was I'd been playing where's the Scotsmen. Working in the city centre the guys that work for me commented on the amount of non British people walking around and at bus stops. The Chinese area of the city. Working on the Barclays buildings opposite central station the amount of non Scottish shops, religious worship centres and so on. Personally I'm astounded how much glasgow has changed. One of my old friends on the east coast had been driving coaches taking people placed on cruise ships in the docks by coach from the ships to shops and back. Funded transport, paying them for shopping, accommodation and funding their living. A town we lived in before moving north not far from Harthill now has groups of military aged non British men walking around. A youth centre closed due to lack of funding while the snp government paid tens of millions for a brand new venue for the Scottish chamber orchestra in Edinburgh where the Usher Hall had been more than fit for purpose. All with Scottish people living on the streets these people get everything. Time we all woke the fk up and removed the criminals in government. I'm sick to death of hearing about the snp as they have consistently failed the Scottish people. Fk, millions sent by the snp to the Ukraine what about millions for those of you out on the street. Makes me sick

It’s a shame that those who enter illegally get housed better than those true UK citizens do. And housing being bought up by developers, and those well off enough to make them into holiday homes, that eventually ruin the grassroots lifestyles of once historic towns and rural areas. As a frequent tourist with my spouse (UK expat) have difficulty in residing, to to high rents, and little housing, large taxes, yet those entering on boats, get housing and assistance, no questions asked, …… but I do it legally and they make me to feel as a criminal …. Since I was a wee boy all I have seen in Glasgow is the councils shafting the people, while they all gain profits, the whole county needs a shake up, look all around the world outside of Scotland they live way better than us, yet we pay with our lives and souls for mediocre infrastructure, mediocre healthcare... and the leaders are as equally mediocre regardless of what political flavour they come in. The people of Scotland absolutely need to unite in mass and bring resolution to the intentional devastation that has been brought about by inequality.

And they pander to the older wealthy generation who own houses which are used as unregulated pension system as they force the young to be mortgage/rental slaves to just have a roof over their head and paying exhorbitant prices just to exist while the asset owners live in luxury.
