Robert.....Love the in depth history and love for your birth place. I was, for about 10 years, the secretary of Clan Maxwell Society...and learn much about the Maxwell's of Montreith.... Hope at some time you were able to meet Sir Michael Maxwell before he passed.....He was intelligent and a kind hearted man.....One of the Lairds of Montreith felt the same way you and your family, siblings, felt about the view of the sea.....Lord Maxwell said he could see 5 kingdoms from his home..... Ireland, Isle of Man, England, Scotland and Heaven......

I have read a bit about pirates and I can say Thurot may well have captured that many ships. But there is a very good chance that many of them were nothing more that fishing boats or other small craft. Another pirate actually captured more ships than Thurot but most were small fishing boats. I did read about one pirate who captured a ship for the purpose of buying hats for the crew. The crew had either lost their hats or they were beyond use which meant they suffered terribly in the sun. So they bought hats from the other ship and then let them go.
