It was interesting to hear about the Norway connection to Scotland. We had always believed that we had Scottish ancestry until DNA testing and Ancestry and found there was Norwegian mixed in with British and Scandinavian. Knowing the intermarriage of royalty during these times explains a lot about how the people of those areas moved around also.

There's a lot of Norse history in certain parts of Scotland... also, Robert The Bruce, John Balliol, etc were all descended from Normans, so kind fo Vikings :-)
@davidpaterson2309
@davidpaterson2309 8 ай бұрын
You should Google “Norse-Gaels” and follow it from there. For centuries, more or less the whole of the western Isles was settled by the Norse (“Viking” was more of a job description) - for so long that they became Gaelic speakers (language usually passes from the mother) who were referred to by the Irish and by Gaelic speaking Scots as “the Foreign Gaels”. And those people were the forebears of a number of the major highland clans - some of whose names are even of (suitably Gaelicised) Norse origin (eg look up the origins of clan Ranald, or McLeod). Modern DNA research has backed this up. It’s a little known corner of Scottish history but quite fascinating. And that’s quite apart from the northern isles where they still celebrate their Norse origins (eg St Magnus cathedral on Orkney).

Love your fascinating storytelling and your humour when your kilt was gone 😮😅. I'm descended from Scots on my father's side and always loved to know about Scottish history since I was a child. It always hurted me the amount of deaths, destruction and bloodshed. I'll always have a soft spot for Bonnie Scotland. Thank you, Robert 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

For your information, clarification, Australia has laid claim to pavlova, Phar Lap, Crowded House, and Russel Crowe. All of these originated in New Zealand, although to be fair, R.C. has spent the larger part of his acting career based in Australia. Love you channel. I have Scottish genes from both sides of the family-Sutherlands and jamiesons- and although Mum Dad and my four older brothers were all dark haired, all the Scottish genes dumped on me with red hair, fair skin, and a tendency to melanomas.

Being a Wallace by birth it would be amazing to know our history in Scotland. My sister attempted to do our family tree when she was in college and by the time her research took her to England it kind of just fizzled out. We will probably never know for sure where our name "Wallace" came from but I do know my family line is made up of some pretty tough individuals. William Wallace's story is fascinating but made up of so many myths and legends but as for truth, well we will always wonder! You are a great story teller and I am enjoying your video's!

Bloody brilliant! Well told. You *are* going to be posting a part 2, are you not? You dropped the story half way through. Saying nothing about his hiatus from Scotland when he left the country for greener pastures and less Edward I. Are you avoiding any bad blood from the movie? I'm surprised to see it, especially since Gibson butchered even the most loose retelling of Wallace's story. Thanks for putting this together for us. I live for each new video.

Braveheart, as he says, was purely entertainment. Very little was true. The French princess was the age of 4 when Wallace died (and had a rather brutal disposition. The English called her 'The She-Wolf.') Street Longshanks died, she and her (supposed) lover had Edward II killed by impaling him up the rectum with a red-hot poker. There's much more, but I thought that you should learn about the most deceitful part of the movie.

It seems to me, and I mean no disrespect, that Scotland’s history is made up very much from beliefs in myths and fables that are told and held fast whilst chatting around the evening fire. The Lowlands and the Highlands with their various factions all believing in one thing or the other. Some of it may be true.
@scotlandunplugged
@scotlandunplugged Жыл бұрын
It’s true. There’s a lot we don’t know about that period. Even today there’s a bit of selective interpretation out there. 😂 People like to fit their own political narratives but the complicated truth is more interesting from my point of view.
