Lots of fiction about lost races and tribes was written in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. And stories about bandits and criminals before and after that. Not to mention the United States version, with murderous rednecks or other rural people. What role the Bean story played in any of them may never be known.

I first heard of saw new bean when I was a hound las and was seriously into all things gory. I’m now an old wummin but still into all things gory. Talking of what, naive to see the rare Cragie boy.
