Hi! I don’t know what your goals are for this channel and these teachings, but I must tell you that your videos ( short, long or interviews) are now giving me a new definition of life. I had to go back and re evaluate a lot of teachings from my culture, society and religion. Your videos give me courage, introduce me to great books and they are not “ yellow self help” books! I am an Iranian and I see a lot of similar lines of wisdom in our literature ( Khayyam, Rumi, Nezami etc) but needed sets of practical rules more relatable to this century. I usually watch your videos, listen to your podcasts and read books when I need a wise friend. Sometimes I write to you in my journal and feel although we haven’t ever met or may not ever meet but my soul knows your soul and all the souls of all the great thinkers you mention or interview. You made me feel more human … Thank you.

What a really kind and thoughtful thing to say to Ryan. I often think of things I’d like to say or write to him. I too have found a way to live through Stoicism and his teachings and I am incredibly grateful for all that I have learned and implemented in my life. Anyway, I wanted to say I thought your comment was very nice. Have a great day 😊

What a pleasure it was to view this today. Scott, as a nursing instructor ata major Michigan university,I SO agree with your observation that universities need to open up more & that we need (as taxpayers) to push for a kind of Marshall plan for that to happen. I wish you were (are you?) teaching in college. specifically to young men, who, IMO have such a plethora of issues r/t masculinity. I have 2 daughters & a son & am an official "boomer". We were going to upend the society; reform what success was, make a more peaceful world, assure rights for POC & women. What happened to us? Half of my age group support a sociopathic, failed businessman who promotes violence & attempted (& is attempting to overthrow or gov.

I am listening to this old podcast, which is only old as when you broadcasted it. As it’s the kind of show which has no expiration date. Where I found the need to write is when you poke about building mental & physical strength. After a long life experience I definitely agree that those are the priorities in life in order to compete or simply live in a very competitive world. It builds confidence and we know that from mental lows always come mental highs. Everything is normal & that’s what life is about. One thing I often add is that Willpower is either one has or maybe needs to be built. Willpower is an essential or indispensable Thank you for those so humble conversations. Those should be taught to youths 🇫🇷🇺🇸

Greetings from italy, i'm commenting under this video since it's the most recent. I want to express how glad i am that finally Stoic phylosophy is getting the spotlight it deserves. When i studied latin and phylosophy and read the Stoics (Marcus Aurelius,Seneca Epictetus) and the Epicureans (Epicurus, Lucretius) i was enthralled by the modernity of it all. Seneca's De brevitate vitae and De otio (on the briefness of life, on free time) really changed my worldview, and of course Marcus Aurelius meditations. Also, Cicero's De amicitia (on friendship) and a lot of his public orations (Pro Milone, Catilinariae, ecc.) are very interesting reads full of interesting quotes.

This is so wild. 24:35. This exact wisdom came to me two days ago. A girl at my job kept trying to get me to stand up for myself and demand respect through certain tasks because she felt my managers were taking advantage of me. I kept telling her look now Is not the time and there’s a right time and place. She wouldn’t get it. I’m a black woman and instead of working at at the bar like I was hired to do my manager keeps having me work the door. I’d care but I have two jobs and dont have the time to argue with my new manager over this stuff when I’m actually trying to go on vacation in the beginning of January. The woman at the bar, who was hoping to do me a favor really couldn’t understand restraint. Later when I thought about it at home I realized that was my divine masculine speaking. All people should master their Devine masculine and feminine. 24:35

Calling out or addressing someone being an asshole or taking shit out on the wrong people is not the same thing as being vulnerable. You teach someone to be graceful by gracefully letting them know when they see doing wrong. theres a creative and artistic element to it. being in the moment requires addressing wrongs to maintain ones integrity. sometimes that means sticking your neck out. People dont learn the truth by misdirection. sometimes having tougher skin and understanding is the remedy. But in the end, only you know in the moment if youve reacted properly. Generally i have less fear, regret, and hurt immediately after a confrontation or disrespectful interaction.

Fascinating that we are hearing more and more on this show that we have to be so happy with "our elected representatives" and "the government." The Senate passes "amazing laws," is actually being said. Stop it. There have always been Stoics that were against their government, and Stoics that were working for them. Cato himself was extremely outspoken (you could even say aggressive). And he wasn't the only one. The idea that being positive, sweet and compromise-minded is somehow Stoic is sheer nonsense. Other than that, certainly some very good other points. Loved what he said about being authentic by acting from your positive emotions (while dealing with negative emotions the Stoic way, meaning by arguing them out).

Really appreciate this conversation, a lot to take away from it. Question: I know you said that Angela Merkel's tweet is classy for saying her retirement will be boring unremarkable or etc, isn't that just her own way to add more into the ridiculous arguments all over Twitter? Wouldn't it have been better leadership to not say anything at all? By saying that 'pun' or whatever you can call that, as small as it was in comparison to what other leaders and politicians do, it's still playing the game of getting back at someone. My thoughts. PS. There's a sound in the background that I had to fight against since it was so distracting 😅😅 was it Ryan opening and closing a bottle often?

My thought on Elon is stress and lack of sleep drives a lot of his unpredictability. Also a misfire on the occasional social cues are a subset of being on the spectrum. Plus his childhood was quite strained and that shows itself in his outbursts. I admire his work ethic and drive, but question his aggression towards competition and employees. It is possible to work hard and be a good person at the same time.

Eating shitty, unhealthy food and being obese is in fact a choice. It's not hard or expensive to buy some potatoes, carrots, canned beans, lettuce, etc. People decide to be fat or healthy on their own. They don't a "program" or to be "setup" to eat well. Very simple.

Government and politicians are not civil masters, indeed, it s not an easy jobs!! We Ppl demand the politicians to work for us. That s why not everyone can be politicians, we want them to be tough, do not take things personal, do not overly sensitive but being articulate and sharp to see things and make right choices!!

I disagreed with a lot in this (the guest) and with ryan on the all the pandemic stuff which is coming to light more each day. If you only get one flow of info you never know of the other stuff. I like Ryan and respect what he is doing though.

I’d take Michael Phelps over some famous smack talking athletes. Do good things from the inside. Drive yourself without stepping on and over others.

it must be difficult to be truly stoic in the USA where capitalism is so prevalent, perhaps we are all epicureans hoping to become as stoic as possible. "making more money" was an interesting departure from what was being said (assume wealth wasn't an issue). This points to not having enough... or maybe more for charitable causes. I guess being completely diogenistic (if I could create a verb out of him), is a step too far in our modern world. loved the talk, better tomorrow.

I have my criticism of Elon but you or I have no place saying a bad word about the guy. You do need to "be that guy". Just sit in the corner and do your amusing commentary without the baseless claims calling people sociopaths, seeing the worst in everyone, and making obvious predictions that somehow Swisher finds "refreshing"... haha. And highly doubt he gets high as NASA tests him often for SpaceX. He's no saint but he will be one of the top 5 people remembered for the next thousand years (if he gets Starship working). Be kind just like you say.
