This was the Golden Age of figure skating. Scott was the king.

I always enjoy watching him, he skates so fast, especially that series of turns he does at 1:10-I can't recall seeing any of the other skaters do that. Perhaps they did, I just can't remember. I loved his long program for this olympics, the beginning was so disco-y. I didn't know Brian Boitano went to this olympics.

Seems like it should be yesterday. Time flies too fast.
Considering he lost the SP and the LP , but still managed to win Olympic Gold really says something 🐙

At 0:58, he was SO close to those boards. That could've been a disaster.

I'm shocked he didn't catch his skate. Wowzers!

Scott Hamilton is an icon but by 1984 even though school figures were still a big factor he really had sort of faded - by worlds in 1984 he was clinging on by the skin of his teeth/reputation. Sadly most of us prefer the freeskate so Scott would lose to Orser who was more dynamic in style and in jumps.

@mlc2005 Scott though was only 2nd to Orser in both the short and long programs, and virtually every judge placed him below. I dont agree with the figures but the fact is they were a reality and part of the scoring, and Orser sucked at them so his 7th was probably justified. So the question is whether or not Hamilton deserved to be lower than 2nd, alot lower if he were to lose the gold overall, or not. Did any of the skaters outside Orser deserve to be over Hamilton, let alone several?

They need to bring figures back. Skating has gotten so sloppy.

I find it hard to believe that Hamilton beat Simond in all 3 figures. The fix was in.

I love Scott, but Orser won the event in terms of the free skate. This was back when reputation literally meant everything, and I'd respect Scott a lot more if he'd admit that. He was so overmarked here, it wasn't funny. And I'm an American.

You forget that the compulsories still counted a lot. The other skaters like Sabovcik, Cerne and Fadeev didnt outstake him. You could argue that Orser and Boitano skated better. But it was still not enough for him to lose the gold medal. Orser was too far behind to win. Mathematics, baby.

@@metsdudenj Cerne was a very elegant and stylish skater which is unusual for a West German, but unfortunately also seemed to lack power and strength in any of his technical elements and covering the ice.
