If I could fly anywhere in the world to hear one musician it'd be Scott. I first heard him on Jeff Berlin's "Champion" album and it changed my life. I was lucky to get to know him while I lived in LA and he's a wonderful person as well as being one of the worlds greatest guitarists and composers. Thanks for covering him here Andy, he truly deserves much more attention.

The "Giant Steps" cover by VTT that you referenced is a good example of a point I made regarding another of your posts; i.e., that the top fusion players, rather than lowering the level of viruosity (as some jazzbos like to contend), in fact raised the level of instrumental virtuosity over their 'pure' jazz counterparts to truly nosebleed heights.

Love Henderon's Tribal Tech stuff and his solo work, i've seen him 3 times, once with Tribal Tech, once with Jeff Berlin and Dennis Chambers & once with his own trio. He is an unbelievable guitarist and has a distinct sound, when you hear him, you know straight away who it is. I still say to this day that his playing with the Elektric Band was his absolute best even though he wasn't with them very long but he played a big part in helping to shape their early sound. Scott Henderson is one of the greatest guitar players on the planet.

Scott is an absolute monster. I attended Musicians Institute in 90/91. My girlfriend was his roommate at the time and he would be writing and jamming all the time at home. what treat to be able to hear that. Loud!!! Saw him live many times. Shockingly good.

I should Scott is an amazing teacher as well. I'm a drummer and I attended a counter point class that he was giving at the time. He was so lucid and concise,it made perfect sense. He is a super funny guy too. I was fortunate to see Tribal Tech with Joey Heredia. They were astounding and Joey's drum solo was the best I've ever seen. And i am not a fan of drum solos. I agree Tribal Tech are/were the greatest jazz/rock bands of our time. If not ever.

I’ve met Scott , a friend of mine made his speaker cabinets ( Kerry Wright) . So Kerry and I would go see Scott at LA clubs and Scott would always greet us after the show with, “ sorry you saw that show” ,he was always self deprecating. We on the other hand would be, dude that was amazing, if you made mistakes we certainly didn’t catch them. Scott Henderson is the man and he is a teacher as well. Know you have to see a Michael Landau solo show, another master guitarist, and another Kerry Wright cabinet user.

Fantastic choice! - I studied with him at MI in 86-7. A huge inspiration and educator to me. It took *him* to get me to finally, reluctantly, learn and really get down , internalise and play all that melodic and diminished scale/mode theory stuff. Whether jazz, fusion - or ( reluctantly for me, dragging me kicking and dragging heels... to... ) rock and blues...and all that "tone shit"... what with his love of the 70s classic axemen - specially Ritchie Blackmore, he's the man. ( Just wish he wouldn't use that "Hendrix chord" quite so often... )

He is phenomenal. I saw him at a little seedy club in North Hollywood 20 years ago. It was almost too much. As a drummer I just mostly sat stupified at what kind of journey he was taking us on with the guitar, there was so little recognizable harmonic structure in straight jazz or rock in themselves. It was just something else.

It wasn't Tribal Tech, but Kirk was on drums. Good golly, seeing those single strokes in person was something else. Was I motivated or demoralized? ; )

OK! "But do you like him"? That's the question? Now here's something I want to say.. I love guitar greats, I've been listening to them since the 60's. Hendrix is like one of maybe 2, 3, 4 or so real fantastic players that I really got into. Some or most have passed on, or changed coarse on their styles, so the only one I've still been listening to is Hendrix, until someone told me about Scott Henderson? Now, it's like "the sixties are starting over again"! I barely got to know Allan Holdsworth, now he's gone too. I feel like a Kid again, since I found Henderson! Keep bringing it forward, I want to hear more! Thanks!!

Andy, do you no have the CD of the first CCEB album? It has an extra track with SH on it, and it's one of THE best things I've ever heard. It's called Silver Temple. Also - SH is one of my all time fave players. I love everything he did up until the 5th TT album, after which things developed in a way that wasn't for me.
@AndyEdwardsDrummer Жыл бұрын
Hi Mo....yes I have heard Silver Temple, why was it not on the original?
@mohammednazam4644 Жыл бұрын
@@AndyEdwardsDrummer I think there were two reasons - vinyl had to be kept to a certain length for optimum sound quality but they also has extra tracks on the CD's so more people would buy CD's. I think this album was '86 so still quite early on in the CD age. In fact, I suspect that the fact that it had extra tracks on the CD (I think there might have been two?) sort of forced me to get a CD player! Great album. Still my face CCEB album. I also really love the first three TT albums. The tunes, playing and production are superb.

Yes, Scott is a giant. Loved his earlier stuff more because of the more melodic playing. He never truly sounded like Allan but, the closer he sounded the more I liked. Obviously for me, Holdsworth would be my desert island jazz rock guitarist. Loved Scott's playing on Jeff Berlin's "Champion" album. Scott's heart seems more "rocky" than "jazzy". Not my cup of tea.

@@AndyEdwardsDrummer, I'm glad that I could bring some good news then ;) By the way - I love this video. I've seen Henderson trio twice, in a small club located in my hometown of Szczecin, PL. Let me say that Scott is totally cool, funny, and down to earth. Just a nice dude wearing old loose jeans and a baseball cap. But most importantly, he is an outstandingly adventurous player, even during a gig with the audience of 50-60 people. When I approached Scott, I told him that this "Captors" solo from the first Vital Tech Tones was one of the best things I had heard in my life. He laughed a little bit and explained politely that he didn't remember that solo. And I can't blame him, cause I'm sure that If he were to play this tune live, he would come up with something that would blew me away even more. A ghost of a roided up, jazz sniffing Hendrix would come up, Larry Coryell would raise from the dead. Something along those lines.
