@dang18615 жыл бұрын
Historical note: This type music was relegated to the saloon because its composers were black and not allowed to play in the big concert halls of the time. Rag Time music had a more respected following in Europe by the European composers than it had in America with its silly Jim Crow laws. History kind of repeated itself 50 years later when many blues artists went to Europe and found a huge following...that later became the British Invasion.

Well done! Perfect tempo, nice clarity, without sacrificing the playfulness of this one. It reminds me of “The Easy Winners” - both are rare Joplin compositions of pure carefree joyousness without a hint of sadness or regret. I imagine Joplin wrote them during a happy uncomplicated time in his life, having found love, recognition, and a measure of wealth. But Joplin's nature was not given to endless sunshine. Your performance of this one is as good as I've heard. Much better than Rifkin's, which is idiosyncratically slow (however, I generally view Rifkin as the gold standard of Joplin players). Both you and Rifkin feel the need to accent the A♭ (bar 18) in the descending bassline at the end of the first strain. I don't like this at all. That note is so delicious in part because it is so far out of the key; it stands out on its own. If anything, it should be 𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳emphasized.

I don’t mean to rain on your parade, but the king of ragtime didn’t enjoy a whole lot of carefree uncomplicated times in his life. As an African American living in the reconstruction era life was not easy, despite being a prolific musician. Despite record breaking sales he had continuous financial challenges and died relatively young of syphilis.
