I think everyone is missing the point. Here are some *REAL IMPORTANT* issues we should be criticizing: Which camera was used to record this video of Scott Kelby? Was it Canon, Nikon, Sony, Panasonic? What clothes was Scott Kelby wearing, and who paid him to wear them? What car did Scott Kelby drive to the studio that day, and how much did they pay him? Did Scott Kelby get gas for his car at Exxon, Shell, or Chevron? Because we'll lose all respect for him if he's not using the same fuel as we are! How much did Scott Kelby's real estate agent pay him to buy the house he lives in? How many people will stop following Scott Kelby because his new 'camera of choice' offends them? (and how much will they get paid for this?) Do Canon shooters feel better about themselves now, because Scott Kelby also shoots Canon? Do Nikon users find that their cameras suddenly stop performing as soon as Scott Kelby jumps off of the Nikon bus? Does Scott Kelby use Western Digital or Seagate hard drives? Lexar or Sandisk? ...and how much do they pay him? Why do we all need to be *just like* Scott Kelby? Did Sony give Scott Kelby a new HDTV, but not pay him enough to use their cameras too? Are my preferences invalidated because someone else prefers something different? How much value did Les Paul guitars lose because Scott Kelby prefers a Stratocaster? ...and how much is Fender paying him for this!?! ...oh, and I can't forget one of my favorites that came up a few months ago: How much did Adobe pay Scott Kelby to tell his followers that the monthly rental of Adobe CC is a great thing, and we should all do it?

Sigh. Both brands offer pros/cons that are well documented and keep changing. As a customer, it's my job to sort them out and decide which compromises I want to make. That said, I switched from Nikon to Canon after the second time U.S. Nikon 'support/service' screwed me. Their motto seems to be, 'The customer is always wrong and it's our job to correct them and extract as much money from their wallet as we can while doing that'. From my perspective that is reason enough make the change. In contrast, Canon support and service have been excellent though the latter can seem expensive, it's in line with what other companies charge.

I've shot both Canon and NIkon professionally.... They are both very good systems. I'm sure the REAL reason Scott switched... would be that Canon reaches out to the portrait photography industry. They show up at state and national conventions. They send out reps, are friendly, they sponsor programs, etc. Nikon doesn't really do this very well.... they come off as a little above it all. I am at this point a Nikon user.... because I have all the lenses... and am not important enough that Canon would approach me in the way they did with Scott. :) Mind you... I'm very happy with my gear. But Canon must have seen the value in sponsoring Scott. I would imagine there WAS a big check. So what... not like Canon is bad stuff or something... If they reach out and support Scott... then good for him. To bad for Nikon that they apparently didn't support Scott in the way that Canon now does. All this Canon vs. Nikon stuff is kind of silly. You know very well... that it is much more the photographer than the equipment.

I'm new to photography. I picked Canon over Nikon et al because my girlfriend picked up a T3i/600D in the summer, so eventually I decided to buy a 7D secondhand. I've always felt comfortable with Canon but it seemed like almost every photography related channel on KZbin was geared towards Nikon. I'd have to be honest and say that Nikon fan boys/girls are a lot louder and way more aggressive than Canon users, at least from what I've seen and experienced. It really made me think of switching to Nikon but this video helped me realize that it really does boil down to your own personal preference and which camera feels best to you. Now that I'm used to Canon, it's really hard for me to pick up a Nikon...I just feel more comfortable holding a Canon camera. And besides, I find their off white lenses a lot more esthetically pleasing :D Welcome back to the Light Side!

Ari Pac Hi, you are absolutely right. I have noticed that too. It's as if Canon DSLRs are the worst. It's true that, in a competition, more people naturally side with the weaker one (Nikon). Canon is a stronger competitor, and many people just can't accept it.
@calvinchann1996

+Markdean Masanque most people are scared they've made the wrong decision and so want confirmation that they've chosen right and will talk down anything that can challenge that. The fact that more Nikon shooters are apparently being aggressive points to one conclusion. At the end of the day, in my opinion, chose the system that gives you what you need, by which I mean glass and system accessories, as bodies change regularly.

+Calvin Chann That's correct. Yesterday I saw a Nikon guy, his name is theoria apophasis (he owns a youtube channel) he was bashing the EOS 5D Mark IV on CanonUSA channel while praising his Nikon D500's focus points etc. I just lol, he doesn't know that only 55 of 153 focus point on D500 are selectable. He maybe never read the user's manual, it clearly states the Nikon D500 is not compatible with 15 Nikon VR lens for long exposure or high iso photography. He doesn't realize that Nikon bodies sometimes have compatibity issue with some Sigma lenses and even with Nikon lenses themselves, yet he is very loud when bashing Canon gear on Canon channel.

Switched to Canon a few years back and never looked back. Like Ari Pac mentions in his post, Nikon fans are very aggressive and protective of their brand and will not admit to its failings. This is quite apparent in every forum and discussion. I was like this until a friend lent me his Canon when I was thinking of upgrading to the D800. The first shot I took convinced me to switch. I think Canon users just go on with their business as they know they chosen wisely and work with the camera they like, not needing constant convincing that they have the best equipment or brand. In my opinion, a lot of Nikon users on the forums have tunnel vision and are just interested in running down canon, not fully convinced of the product they are using. I purchase a 5Dmk3 instead of the D800 and recently added a 1Dx to my kit. They are simply phenomenal camera's.

I'm a Nikon shooter myself and although some of it's statements are real about things being different, they are not necessary true but saying those differences make the brand X better than the brand Y. I have absolutely nothing against switchers from a brand to another. I have a lot of photographer friends, we shoot cameras as a profession and we're all divided into either Nikon shooters or Canon. We always tease, and joke about the eternal debate, advantages and disadvantages. However, when hearing Scott talking about the switch, I say - hey, I have nothing against him although his REASONS do beg some eyebrows to be lifted. The skin tone thing, I always heard people bragging that the Canon is so much better. I agree, Nikon has that signature yellowish look, but Canon has the magentaish/purple sometimes look I honestly dislike more. Thing is, the D4 has adopted some of the more Canon-ish look now, and the new Canons are adopting a bit of a more yellowish look and I don't see how he feels there's so much of a difference now. It's actually very difficult to really know for sure which was shot with which camera. Anyway, then there's the ISO performance. I can't believe he keeps on going with HOW AMAZING the hi-iso performance on the 1Dx, when EVERYONE knows both the D4 and 1Dx are fantastic hi-iso performers and there's a hard task saying which is better. I'm not saying it isn't a difference but it doesn't make one better and HELL, it doesn't make one SO MUCH BETTER. Then, there's the image review speed. Jesus, all the Nikons have it, using the multi-selector button and Canon has it on the wheel thing. They both work in the same way and the results are SO SIMILAR. Again, as a Nikon shooter, I don't feel any anger when someone bashes the Nikon in favor of Canon, but when the reasons are so crap, I feel it's not fair. Yes the 5D Mk3 is a fantastic camera, and I have to admit, Nikon doesn't have a direct competitor for it but let's admit what's there to admit and not invent stuff. Also why not just say you like Canon because it has more FPS that you need for your sport shots? That's a fact nobody is arguing, and it could have been enough... I was thinking about switching myself, but I feel that Nikon is made more FOR ME, not necessary better, or that Canon is worse. I am pretty much disappointed that someone of Kelby's caliber can pull out these justifications when all he seems to have done is switch from a sponsor to another. It could have been perfectly fine for everybody to just admit it as it was, as of course Canon has phenomenal cameras, so money could be a big reason alone without loosing anything from the workflow and great results by making the switch. But please mr. Kelby, don't embarrass yourself into thinking we are stupid.

So, what we've established from this video is that Canon is like Apple, which sell standard hardware with a 50% price increase cause of the dumb fruit on the back. And that Scott Kelby thinks he can speak for the entire photography profession and claim that "photographers care what stuff looks like". Uh yea, the photos, I couldn't give a shit what my camera looks like. I used to shoot Canon until I saw the D3 was alot better camera than the 1Ds2 with the only loss being 4mp. Nikon offer things that Canon just dont seem to be bothered with. Crop mode is something that Nikon have offered for years yet Canon don't seem to care about offering, its a simple firmware addition, no complex hardware changes. Canon also seem to not care about their consumer range either. They keep all the mid level stuff to the XXD range of cameras. Whereas Nikon have been adding features to their low/mid range cameras with each iteration. A perfect example of this is the removal of the AA filter on the D3300, won't ever see that on any of the XXXD/Rebel range

More and more, after the switch from NAPP to Kelby One, Scott appears to be a a sellout... May seems offensive but this is fact... This confession speech sounds exactly like the ones some guys would make after doing something bad and go to rehab... This is Scott's rehab session here, just less expensive than rehab... Trying to find the worst excuses to explain why he switches to Canon after many years dedicated to Nikon. So many tiny little excuses he finds (dial, skin tones...) are just so ridiculous and fake... When one of us invest in a "ecosystem" this is for long term, unless you are a professional being paid the high bucks, the cost of lenses is so outrageous that switching is difficult.. Scott get most of his equipment for free... On a business level, I do not blame the guy: he seizes opportunities and that is fantastic. Great job! His lifelong efforts pay. How many times do we hear about athletes getting major contracts... Scott: there is no shame in making money! However, on a personal level, Scott has reached a new low: he should have come to us, with a 30 sec video saying "Canon sponsors me now with muchos dineros, I switch. Thanks Nikon, next time, put more on the table..." Canon has not changed ergonomics or software settings for a while... "Choosing a camera is a personal decision.." Are you saying that for all these years you did not have "personality"? That you were not an informed enough "pro"? That year over year you could not perform a feature for feature comparison between Canon and Nikon and decide, based on a thorough analysis, what brand would suit you best? Lame... Very lame... An ew low has been reached: the one about the skin tones and how Canon is better than Nikon... What a joke! Especially when you know Scott Kelby spends a big part of his life retouching skin tones on Photoshop... Again, not questioning your skills... But seriously questioning your intellectual honesty on this one...

The Nikon vs Canon debate will never go away. I had Nikon for several decades but wanted a long lens for serious bird photography. The cost of the long, fast lenses was such that camera bodies were trivial in cost by comparison. While I did have an 800mm f/5.6 Nikkor at the time, when Canon introduced IS into their long lenses, that was it. I was gone. Sold all my Nikon gear and went to Canon. Nikon was years behind in getting VR into their serious lenses. For me at least, that was a "real" issue that justified making the switch. There was nothing "touchy-feely" about it. Of course, I never went back to Nikon but, these days I find myself thinking a Sony mirrorless body, like the a9 might be a real improvement for the type of photography I do, or at least did. Just as Nikon lagged badly in image stabilization back when I switched, Canon now seems light years behind Sony in mirrorless!

I started photography shooting film on a Canon. Fastforword to today, I made the switch to a Nikon as my first DSLR. I did my research, weighed the pros and cons, and it turns out that Nikon suited my needs. After using that for a while I eventually switched back over to Canon after fine tuning my subject matter. In the end it really does come down to user preference and what you're looking to accomplish. I LOVE my Nikon and I'm going to miss it, but the Canon just has other features I'm looking for that will meet my end goal. There's no fan-based love-loss, just a matter of necessity. It happens. :)

I'd be willing to bet when given a test to tell which picture came from what brand of camera, post processing having been done, that nobody could tell the difference between two brands worth of pictures. Just look at the pictures... nothing else... no metadata, no brand names written above or below it... Canon and Nikon both put out phenomenal products that can only be distinguished by someone or something TELLING you which picture came from where.... Put any 2 similar level models of different brands against each other, taken by the same photographer, using the same settings, with file names indicating nothing about which camera it came from, processed in Lightroom by someone who isn't the photographer, then put up side by side with zero information... If anyone can tell me, with a straight face, that you could tell the difference 100% of the time, or even more then 50% average guess rate, I would take that bet from you any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

Todd Davis what matters, i suppose, is the kind of experience you get out of using the camera.... whether you find one brand easier to use, or has the controls set up the way you want, even whether it fits better in your hand. but yeah, ultimately there's going to be no difference in the kind of images you can produce

That is exactly what I tell anybody who asks what kind of camera they should buy… I always tell them just go to a big box store and pick up all the different cameras and start playing with them and fiddling with the controls and maybe rent a few different brands to use for a week or so to tell what you want to shoot with Since once you buy a brand and some good glass… You are esentially stuck with that brand unless you decide to lose a lot of money selling it all

Truth is if you know your tools and when to use them you will get great shots. No one should buy something just because they see someone else using it. Unless you are jumping from entry to pro equipment they are both going to do the job. I don't have the money to use both, but more power to Scott for building a brand that is supported by those who make good stuff. Jealous-yes hater-never

I agree Canon has the best ergonomics, whenever I use a Nikon I feel like it's a repurposed film camera, I notice a lot of the buttons are in the same general area even if it's not very intuitive. Canon DSLRs never feel like a film camera to me but I feel they fit better in my hand and everything is within reach of my finger tips.

I switched to Canon when the America’s Cup race was here in San Diego. I drove one of the photo boats with magazine photographers aboard. After one day’s racing, one of the photographers was having trouble with his Canon and was going to Canon’s office at the Marriott. I went along because I was having a little difficulty with my Nikon too. When he told the Canon guy his problem, the guy pulls out a little screwdriver and other tools and fixes the camera while we wait. After a few minutes, I left and went to the Nikon room hoping they would do the same. The Nikon rep said he would send the camera in for repair, and I wouldn't get it back for a couple of weeks. When I protested, he told me they had to send the camera to their offices in Torrance (about 100 miles away). The next day, I drove to the Nikon office in Torrance, showed my camera to the representative, who then told me it would take a couple of weeks to repair. When I protested saying I drove all the way from San Diego to speed things up, he said, “We aren’t even going to look at it for a week.” Nikon has always had an attitude. Canon has always seemed more friendly towards their customer. When I ordered a 400mm Nikkor lens, it could close to six months to get it. When I attended the Long Beach Grand Prix, Canon had towers set up with their long lenses mounted to tripods, which they allowed ANY Canon owner to use for free! At the America’s Cup race, Nikon wanted to charge me for use of a long lens for a day; Canon was letting their customers borrow a lens at no charge! Nikon makes great stuff. I bought my first (Nikon F) in 1963, but after these experiences, I sold both Nikon bodies and motor drives, and several lenses plus accessories, and switched to Canon. I am very happy I did! Both companies make great cameras, but I can do without the attitude!

Granted, I am not on your level of expertise, but like you, I LOVE the ease of operation with my 6D. When you are shooting ANY type of fast moving subject, you need to get your settings adjusted quickly....and frankly, Canon is incredible for making this work. Thanks for sharing your story, Sir! P.S.....never had Canon send me a camera, though. :-)

If there was a Nikon D850 and a Canon 5D4 both sitting on a table and someone told you to pick one and it would be yours for free. Forget about lenses. Each camera comes with all the lenses you would need. Which would you choose?

I shoot Nikon. I worked in a camera store recently for nearly 2 years and sold mostly Canon. It's like BMW vs Mercedes. Canon may be better for sports, but Canon has nothing like the D800. Canon has a much greater lens selection (4 pro 70-200mm lens, vs 3 on Nikon side). Personally I think the Nikons are more ergonomic. You can't use APS-C lenses on Canon full-frame cameras. Nikon even lets you use legendary manual focus lenses on theirs. I used to tell clients that if they are spending less than $1000 on a camera, I would go Canon. But over $1000 you'll save a lot on lenses with a Nikon. This may have changed, but files from a Nikon were always a bit warmer than Canon's, which I prefer. Canon files were always a bit cooler. But what matters so much more are the images you produce. Keep in mind that Scott fell in love with Canon when he was shooting sports. Sports historically was always Canon's forte, whereas Nikon historically was always the photojournalistic/artistic choice.

"It feels like it was designed by apple" Did you really have to say that? I really like my Canon. I guess I will have to pretend I didn't hear you say that... Actually this is a bad analogy Scott. Apple doesn't allow you to customize there stuff like you can with a Canon Camera. Apple wants it to look and work their way.

It is not like Canon's camera software is extremely open by design. Magic Lantern wouldn't exist if Canon (like everybody else) would make things more open and build in pseudo restrictions that restrict what hardware could actually do.

First off, I have been a long time Nikon user and kindly don't torch me for the next sentences I am going to make. I recently switched to Canon because of the same reason why Mr. Kelby did too. It is the ergonomics that I believe the Canon has over the Nikon. I don't pixel peep like others. My work is my art and whatever gives me the fastest result regardless of the implication I am for it. I would have never switched too if not for a friend that handed me a beat up Canon 7D that has over 200K shutter life. No repair has been done in spite of its mileage. One thing that ticked me off with Nikon was the failing customer service they have. I had problems with the previous DSLRs and all they do is patch up, I believe, the problem and after a while the same issue comes back. Specially when I purchased the D600 where it was sent to repair probably 5 times in less a year and that was a big downtime that I have since I have to rent a body just to fulfill my work. On the lighter side, I am amazed by the quality of pictures coming out from Nikon. Canon is still doing a slight catch up on that side of the complex but I can live with that since it is not that far off.

I have always been a Canon shooter, but I would be lying if I said I never wanted some of the Nikon gear that has come out in recent years. This Canon vs Nikon, Ford vs Chevy debate or whatever you want to call it between manufacturers is great for the consumer because it spurs innovation. I think it's safe to say that no matter which brand you choose, you have the tools to get the job done. I think once we are in one camp or the other we learn to work with our chosen brand's compromises and it becomes second nature. Also, both brands have compromises.

Hear hear! When I went to buy my first DSLR I knew I wanted Canon or Nikon, for their wide range of lenses and overall quality. I opted for Nikon, solely because it felt better in my hands. I've never regretted the choice - and it's never bothered me that for other people the choice would be the other way round. Horses for courses!

Honestly, it's not about "apple design", it's just better USER INTERFACE DESIGN. I shoot a 7d, I did use Nikons for a bit of work, used Nikons from friends "for fun" and stuff like that - I got nothing against Nikon, but it really fell back in user interface design. Canon just works better in that sense - more intuitive, faster. They HAVE to step that up, I'm sorry but that's really how I feel - Nikon cannot keep up with designing fast and intuitive controls and menus, in their whole camera lineup, from entry cameras to super professionals. (On entry cameras for example, Canon has a dedicated ISO button next to the shutter. With Nikon you always need two hands to change ISO.)

Well good for Schott Kelby, who ever he is............and the point of this?.........it is personal choice! Though we do not think much of them as a company, we chose Nikon as it felt right, thats it! We use Hasselblad V over other medium format for the same reason, though the Carl Zeiss gave icing! We chose Sinar due to aesthetic appeal in design, format flexibility and that Schneider is such a beautiful word to pronounce, SScchhnnniieeedddeeeerrrr arf! ; ) ..........Why switch? Use both if a situation dictates!

800lb Gorilla obviously we'd all love to have an extra $40,000 but that is not always an option....and the D800E while not exactly cheap certainly punches way above it's weight class. add stitching and careful technique and you have a truly astonishing bang for the buck.

Why I use Canon - customer service! Yes, they make great cameras and that's very important to be of course, but I've known a handful of people who used Nikon over the years who needed service/support on their cameras, and I heard so many horror stories from them over what they went through during those experiences. I've had to use Canon service maybe 3 times, and each time I would give them a solid B to B+ rating. Sometimes it's not even who makes the better of two products - it's who treats you better as a customer when you need help.

Mark Walker wrong. our office has used apple systems since the early 90s. after a lot of frustration, we switched over exclusively to custom windows systems now. apple simply isn't what it used to be. at least from the professional standpoint. they have become too consumer centric. the new macpro is unusable for our workflow due to lack of card slots which we heavily rely upon. build quality has dropped and repair costs is so high, might as well buy a fresh one. this total lack of upgradability works for consumers using it for social media but doesn't make financial sense for heavy professional use.

Currently using a Apple macpro, for the last year and a half. Card slot issue is a simple plug and play solution. Macpro is upgradeable. Currently producing 1080p videos, but will agree they have left the proffesional out of heavy development. I had to upgrade to a Dell 4K monitoe, because Apple doesn't even make one. That being said I'm still a happy Apple user for 24 years.
