@@Annihilationzh basically the expansion of the ice inside the mechanism was too strong for the steel to compensate for. It wasn't exactly the ice that blew up the safe, it was the pressure inside it.

In short, ice does in fact, expand, but theres no way this kind of reaction would generate ice fast enough, or build up enough pressure to break the door open. More than likely, the ice that does form inside the lock would be forced out the same way it went in. Or the water would spread to other parts of the safe and freeze there.

Most safes aren't water tight. Pouring water into the mechanism might just leak out and not do anything. In order to bust steal like they did here, you'd need water in a water tight steel container, filled to the brim, and freeze it. But, it wouldn't be as dramatic as in this scene as you'd need a sharp rise in pressure very quickly to do that, which you can't really get off of the small amount of water he poured into the safe here. At best, he might warp the steel plates a bit. And the reason the ice could do even that is because water (and therefore ice) is relatively incompressible, which means that it can't be forced into a smaller space than the volume it takes up. Which is why water is often used in hydraulic lifts, pumps, etc. But, the increase in volume of water when it freezes wouldn't be dramatic enough to pop a safe open like this with that small amount of water. Still a fun scene though.

He is no Tony stark, whom back in the day he would just build weapons and just sell it without being concern about what it could do to innocent people if not used in the right way. In the beginning, hank pym is just a scientist that shield recruited, he didn't want anybody to know about his shrinking tech suit. Everyone at shield thought that he is studying insects in his lab and just working on different gadgets that the shield agents can use, but he is also secretly building an Antman suit. Which is why he made it from motorcycle suit and stuff he can find, if he ask for materials from Shield to build the suit, then they would have found out about it and they would have taken it away from him to use as a weapon. Which is why he wouldnt spend a lot of money just he can build it. Most of the money he must have spend on his research and creation of the pym particle, it is also mention in the comics that the pym particle took a a long time and a lot failures before hank perfected it.
