Scott's Big Nymph, with Lively Legz, Holsinger's Fly Shop

At the shop I tie flies to order for customers. Scott's Big Nymph is one of the flies I was asked to tie so I thought I'd share it with you. Scott Major from the KZbin channel PA WOODS N WATER created this fly as an imitation for an Isonychia but it is better suited to imitate a Brown Stonefly. He also ties this pattern using ginger ostrich herl. The ginger makes a great pattern for a Golden Stone.
Scott has a great channel where he fishes a lot in my area and all over Pennsylvania. He also likes to use Lively Legz to fish. I don't fish them that much because of the style of fishing I do, but they do catch fish.

I love this pattern. This is the first fly I self tied, following PA Woods instructions, and caught a fish on my own tie. Used it on the Tully first, but have used it in several places in Pa and Md since successfully. Thanks for the video! Nice collaboration!

Neat fly. I agree with you. Its certainly not much like the ISOs I see around here.

James Vatter look more at the silhouette of the fly and less the color and you can see why it works for the ISO. The gilled abdomen is the key to its success I believe.

Do you laquer the turkey tail before tying it in?

I do not. I want it to be flexible to bend back and forth as I make the abdomen and the thorax. The the abdomen is protected by the wire to keep it from breaking and the thorax I use UV glue to create the shellback and protect the tail fibers.
