I heard that a narrow grip isn’t optimal for growth because it doesn’t line up well with your muscle fibers in comparison with a wider grip. Should I ignore this fact because I am stronger with a narrower grip? And is the BB Row shown in the video worse then a chest supported Row because your core is not a limiting factor anymore?
@finn88433 жыл бұрын
I would love to hear your opinion on this one because you are my goto Fitness KZbinr
@ScottHermanFitness3 жыл бұрын
There is nothing wrong with switching your grip up. You can even do a couple sets wide and a couple sets close to ensure you are hitting your back as hard as you can. Too often we are held back by what we think are "rules" to lifting. Just like the row. The chest supported row is GREAT, but if you are trying to overload you wont be able to use momentum. So switch it up, or maybe even do a drop set where you use a traditional barbell row to overload with some momentum and then do a lighter set on the chest supported row for your drop. Always great to try new things!
@OMAR-vk9pi3 жыл бұрын
Tbh don’t overthink small details like that unless you’re gonna be a pro bb just row and get stronger
@kenjisasuke77053 жыл бұрын
Your back has many different muscles groups with fibres going in different directions, so to say that "a narrow grip doesn't line up well with your muscle fibres" is just gym bro science. But generally speaking: A narrow grip allows your elbows to be tucked more to your sides when you pull - this motion targets your Lats more. A wide grip allows your elbows to be more flared when you pull - this motion targets your upper back more.

I used to think the pull-up was the king of back exercises, but it got me very unbalanced side to side and then very serious tendonitis after I hit 50. No one told me that few with any age can do pronated grip full pull-ups without serious issues. One can switch to neutral grip to solve tendon issues, but I ended up going a different way. I learned to use partial pull-ups (pronated works ok for those), negative partial pull-ups and isometric holds, an overhead pulley and mix in some unilateral exercises, and single arm landmine rows (sometimes supersetting with other unilateral). Over the last year that's finally lit up my lats and pretty much made my back balanced now. I know people think partial pull-ups are heresy, but I got it from the late (sadly) mountaindog1 and they work a treat.

Appreciate the video Scott! Which of these back exercises are best for someone with over-developed upper traps? I've been avoiding the bar-row since I feel my traps activating quite a bit and my large traps are taking away aesthetically from my shoulder gains.

I've seen other people advise not to go to a full dead hang on every pull-up as you want to keep the muscles under tension
@ScottHermanFitness3 жыл бұрын
The muscle is under tension when dead hanging. Which is why you can use weighted dead hangs to help improve your pull-up. People use that “tension” excise to ego lift or “get more reps” which end up being half reps. Not good! ☺️
@rdg6653 жыл бұрын
Weighted pullups with progressive overload are the most underrated thing ever 😂😂 Tho it's worth noting they are more exhausting than deadlifts and will absolutely paralyze you if you go to failure 😂😂😂
